My exact reaction. Jesse doesn't do lore guides for games he ain't getting invested in himself. Remember the cataclysm annotation choose your own adventure playlist he had in his early days? Hype levels rising.
Eh, some plot corrections. Foxdie was not intentded to kill Solid. Naomi hijacked the program to include him to get revenge for her brother. Also, his rapid aging has nothing to do with FoxDie, it was either a side effect of the cloning process, or a deliberate flaw built in as a safety precaution.
Unironically here for this series because of all of the fervor behind the Metal Gear series due to the MGS Vol. 1 collection being fixed and of course Delta coming out when it does.
If you’re looking for a halfway decent playthrough of (most) of the Metal Gear series (barring the OG MG1 and MG2), look no further than Chip Cheezum and General Ironicus. They really get into the weeds in terms of lore, break everything down to the studs, and are just a joy to watch. Cannot recommend them enough!
1:13 I’m assuming you meant the MSX and not the NES? The NES games are non-canon afaik since they were made as rushed American ports with no involvement from Kojima. Hell, the man didn’t even know the games *existed* until the sequel was already in development
AFAIK the NES port of Metal Gear is relatively faithful as it follows the same story, other than how Snake defeats the Metal Gear. "Snakes Revenge" is entirely non-canon, though, to the point it's only included in the Master Collection Vol. 1 as bonus content.
I've never played them myself but I've watched gameplays. I never knew much at all about the series so this lore video is a welcome surprise. Snake Eater is a LEGEND. So I will be grabbing that game finally.
There is a lot in here that I'm pretty sure I kind of knew but just forgot about so even as someone who has played most of the games, this is a pretty great refresh.
One of my best gaming memories is staying over at a friends and staying up the entire night to play Metal Gear Solid, I couldn't save so i had to finish the game in one shot. My love for MGS and Kojima was born that night
The number one piece of advise I will give anyone new to Metal Gear Solid story is this: Don't worry if you're confused. So are those of us who have been followed it for years.
I cant wait for this! I played 1-2 as a kid but not until snake eater came out did I pay attention to story, stealth etc. First Game I completed no kills no alerts. Its so freaking good and even though I know people love it I still think it doesn't get enough love. Looking forward to more videos on it. "Paradox.... Game Over"
17:27 Yeah, we are going back to the train tracks after Kojima suplexed the train😅😂 19:14 Yeah, it about Snake, Snakes, and their shedding of skin😁 I know it is not needed, but entertaining it woud be to see Jesse do Lore on Dark Souls😊
MGS3 is taken from a bunch of places in the former Soviet Union; it's implied that the Virtuous Mission takes place in modern day Tajikistan as the plane taking Snake in flies from Pakistan, but most of the forested areas are more likely to be set in the temperate rainforests in Russia's far east rather than the Urals or Central Asia. There's also the bit at the end (no spoilerinos) where a damaged WIG is flown to Alaska without refueling, which indicates more that it's *probably* not in Central Asia or the Urals as that would likely necessitate flying over Chinese airspace where they would have been shot down.
Damn the ending of MGS2 still lives rent free in my head. So cool, and so very relevant even today. That big reveale what GW was actually doing, was so bonkers.
SPOILERS(for 4) I just had to get this off my chest, because it kinda irked me when you said it. Solid Snake does NOT rapidly age because of FoxDie but rather he was simply biologically programmed that way. The same would have happened to Liquid had he not died in one. He’s old in 4 because he “attached” himself to Ocelot. Which btw, doesn’t actually happen. I can’t remember the exact term they use in game but basically Ocelot is just put under hypnosis(for lack of a better word) to make himself think he’s part Liquid. There’s a reason for it… but I’m not getting into that here. Jesse did an excellent job reviewing the first games, to get anyone interested in Snake Eater(or Δ if you prefer)
Ocelot implanted Liquid's persona using a combination of drugs, psychotherapy and hypnotic suggestion. I always thought Ocelot was an old man in MGS4 because, well, he is. In MGS2 he was already wrinkled and white haired so him being old in MGS4 made sense.
If you told me to make a list of the next 50 games Jesse was going to do a video on, this wouldn't have been on it. I played Metal Gear 1 on the NES and Solid on the PS1 and never touched the rest of them. I might give the remake a shot.
Stopping short because the nerd in me can’t let it go Snake doesn’t rapidly age due to FoxDie, his genes were intentionally modified so that he couldn’t be cloned, have children, or otherwise copied. Naomi tells him that during an MGS4 cutscene before fighting an Octopus
Jesse, Tselinoyarsk is in Tajikistan, with the mangrove section seemingly as a reference to real life Tigrovaya Balka Nature Reserve. Also it would be pretty great if you did your MGS Delta Playthrough with Alex Faciane considering his stated love for MGS3.
I was unlucky enough to not have a PS2 when this came out, and then when I did.. it was sold out everywhere.. and I could only find second hand NTSC rips (I had a standard PAL PS2 slim). I was spoiled for bosses but not for the actual awesome gameplay - this will be my first legit playthrough with DELTA.
Nice breakdown, though for MGS2 Ocelot at this point the whole liquid persona is just thought of as a side effect of the arm surgery, with liquid's spirit somehow possessing ocelot at certain points in the story. the brain tech thing is...later explained in mgs4, for now it's...liquid ghost magic.
Can't believe I forgot about "Steve McDichael" thanks for the reminder. Also, one of my big gaming sins is not having played Snake Eater, so looks like I get to remedy that while keeping up with the zeitgeist!
Hehehehe a certain phantom maid is gonna react to this Jesse. But yeah, you nailed all key points that took place during the first two Metal Gear games.
love these videos jessup! thank yuo for this one and also the ff14 one. Ive always wanted to try metal gear but never really known where to start or what to do so this is a nice little taster :)
What I'm getting from this is that Kojima doesn't really know how to write a story. He's basically just a kid with a really big lego set and a lot of 90s-era action movies. It's basically the Raymond Chandler advice for people who aren't where to go with a scene: Have a guy come through the door with a gun. Except with MGS that's the only thing that's happening.
11:00 Jesse, you drop the Hal and Emmerich lore but don't give a sentence to the Otacon Otakon link that they mention in the game? Did you think that was too obvious or something??
1:13 "stemming from Metal Gear for the NES" while a large chunk of the fans might know him from the NES, the Metal Gear series, and thus Snake, originated on the #MSX2 homecomputer system.
16:05 A interesting side note about Arsenal gears purpose in 'controlling information' It's, not surprisingly, a topic more relevant today then it was back when the game was released. Arsenal wasn't necessarily controlling the flow of information for what I would call 'truly nefarious purposes' (depending on your beliefs regarding censorship) but desired to limit the flow in order to assist in providing 'context' to information. It suggests back in the days when information was printed, catalogued, stored, and sold, there was a kind of 'survival of the fittest' of info. Info that was deemed 'wrong, outdated, or irrelevant often was discarded, destroyed, and forgotten. With the rise of the digital age, all information is stored and catalogued regardless. A, what could be seen as a unfortunate side effect, of that, is that now all information is seemingly given the same level of access, and by extension, relevance, importance regardless of the data. As a result, the patriots were concerned that people/parties will use this to spread false or misinformation to better push their own ends, goals, and beliefs. As a result people will not know what to believe, they won't know what is true or what is real (kind of like how you feel at the end of MGS2. Kojima and other people saw this coming YEARS before the reality that we face today, it's absolutely mind blowing.
Small point: it should be referred to as "Metal Gear lore" not "Metal Gear Solid lore" as the franchise is called Metal Gear and is inclusive to the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 that are both canon, and to a lesser extent Metal Gear Rising.
Doesn't even scratch the surface 😂😂😂 The whole Ocelot reveal (his 1000th reveal) that it's just a random arm, and he brainwashed himself to believe it was liquid controlling him sent me. Like. It was so fucking funny in retrospect 😂😂
Metal Gear Solid is several hours of trying to get through the dam underwater portion without the little girl drowning until the disc melts and all your left with is rage and slight PTSD. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Fun fact: Vamp is named that way not because of his vampiric behaviours. It's because he's bisexual. That's the in-universe explanation as explained by Pliskin in MGS2 following you first encounter with Vamp via Codec. I presume "vamp" is slang for bisexual. I don't know enough about LGBTQ slang to know if it is or if it is a slur.
Odd... I played a different NES metal gear 2... "Snake's Revenge" which I think was in zanzibar land but had a humanoid boss with the bottom of his feet as the weaknesss, not a metal gear. I did not recognize the game displayed here... "solid snake"?
Kojima should work on Kingdom Hearts man, that series is starting to make too much sense again. I feel like he'll be credited with working on KH4 for some reason :P
Excited for the Metal Gear Solid Delta playthrough
My exact reaction. Jesse doesn't do lore guides for games he ain't getting invested in himself. Remember the cataclysm annotation choose your own adventure playlist he had in his early days?
Hype levels rising.
Really enjoy new lore series that Jesse and team are creating. Hope they do this more for other games.
Man could you imagine the gentlemen's club doing this lore?
I wonder why this couldn't have been with Santel?
Crazy we got the MGS breakdown before the Remedy-verse one.
The remedy video might be the biggest most expensive video I’ve ever made sooooo
MGS is significantly more straight forward to do lol
@@inoob26 Never thought I'd see the day someone could say that with a straight face.
Haven't played a Metal Gear game since Snake Eater, so I'm here for this Lore vid!
I've heard people talk about metal gear for decades at this point but today i learned what a metal gear actually is
same, I kinda assumed youd use some stealth tools made out of metal, or that its a character name or whatever
Unironically here for this series because of all of the fervor behind the Metal Gear series due to the MGS Vol. 1 collection being fixed and of course Delta coming out when it does.

YIPPEE I can't believe i caught this RIGHT AFTER upload
Gimme that high quality coxtent
Man I’d love to hear you go through all the rest of the games from 3 onwards. Love your storytelling.
1:13 I’m assuming you meant the MSX and not the NES? The NES games are non-canon afaik since they were made as rushed American ports with no involvement from Kojima. Hell, the man didn’t even know the games *existed* until the sequel was already in development

Love the Metal Gear series as a whole. Its wild historical fiction, a nice blend of true events of the past and present, but then twisted on its head.
Jesse with the lore
i love mgs, and i know a lot of the lore!!! i'm not a beginner, but this is so good of intro for new mgs fans!!! you're pretty good!!!!
One of the best recaps of a game, subbed for more of these types of vids
16:10 George Sears is not the leader of the Patriots.
Just excited to see someone tackle such a crazy, convoluted and seriously hilarious series when it comes to lore.
This is gonna be good 😎
I appreciate the effort going into this video. Metal Gear as a franchise is a little "complex", to put it mildly.
Amazing stuff as always! Please do more of these types of content!
"Some how Big Boss survived" That is this series in a nutshell.
Yeah. And then almost 30 years later they finally explained it, and to quote the video, in the most Kojima way possible.
Cant wait to coparent a child obsessed with cooking eggs
me seeing Naked Snake in the thumbnail: "No! That is NOT Solid Snake!"
The number one piece of advise I will give anyone new to Metal Gear Solid story is this: Don't worry if you're confused. So are those of us who have been followed it for years.
Jesse is the last one i expected to make a lore analysis video 😂
I cant wait for this! I played 1-2 as a kid but not until snake eater came out did I pay attention to story, stealth etc. First Game I completed no kills no alerts. Its so freaking good and even though I know people love it I still think it doesn't get enough love. Looking forward to more videos on it. "Paradox.... Game Over"
Loved this, would be awesome if you did more lore videos.
17:27 Yeah, we are going back to the train tracks after Kojima suplexed the train😅😂
19:14 Yeah, it about Snake, Snakes, and their shedding of skin😁
I know it is not needed, but entertaining it woud be to see Jesse do Lore on Dark Souls😊

Love your work from the WoW day sonwards. Top job, Jesse mate! ❤
I enjoyed this more than I expected, quite informative.
22 minutes? Must be a speedrun! =P
I was not expecting this, but its a pleasant surprise none the less. I had no idea You where a MGS fan Jesse.
Do you think love can bloom even on a battlefield?
Loved the advertising for when 3 came out: "Hungry for some Snake?"
SPOILERS(for 4)

lmao in the middle of my deep dive into mgs lore i did not expect a jesse cox video. heck yes.
If you told me to make a list of the next 50 games Jesse was going to do a video on, this wouldn't have been on it. I played Metal Gear 1 on the NES and Solid on the PS1 and never touched the rest of them. I might give the remake a shot.
Man this brings me back. I remember when you used to do Wow lore videos that was a LONG tima ago
Stopping short because the nerd in me can’t let it go
Snake doesn’t rapidly age due to FoxDie, his genes were intentionally modified so that he couldn’t be cloned, have children, or otherwise copied. Naomi tells him that during an MGS4 cutscene before fighting an Octopus
Finally, a ''history'' lesson from Jesse :D
As a MGS lore junkie, this was a great synopsis in such a short space of time.
A Metal Gear lore video?
What a thrill!
Oooooh, that's gonna be a ride, I feel it
You HAVE to make a Fire whale episode, Jesse. We NEED it.
The best part: We finally see EVA credited as Jodi Benson! My favorite Disney princess.
This was cool! Can we get a lore video for the rest of the series?
Honestly didnt even know metal gear started before PS1 that's really cool
Ok this came out of left field, but I am pleasantly surprised
Hoping for a New/remake Kingdom hearts game to see how you try tackle that with this format XD.
Great Video Jesse!
Jesse just casually sneaking in the flower field and all the new people have no clue
This was amazing!
New lore video!? What a thrill ~
Solidus snake is leader of sons of liberty, not the la li Lu le Lo
Thank you, I understand so much better now!!!!!

So cool to see jesse explain the best fortnight skin!
The little tune during the Konami logo on PS1 still stuck in my head
Can't believe I forgot about "Steve McDichael" thanks for the reminder. Also, one of my big gaming sins is not having played Snake Eater, so looks like I get to remedy that while keeping up with the zeitgeist!

Surely since MGS Delta takes place first MGS, you don't really need to know anything about the lore.
*(Looks at video thumbnail)*
*"No, that is not Solid Snake."*
After all these years.
Snake ages at a faster rate because he's a clone designed to live a shorter life, not because of Fox Die.
Love this!

1:13 "stemming from Metal Gear for the NES"
while a large chunk of the fans might know him from the NES, the Metal Gear series, and thus Snake, originated on the #MSX2 homecomputer system.
"It's Kojima man i don't know" - that's it, that's the video.

I love this concept. More, Jesse, More.
Time to get my 🐍 s in a row
So next one is the rest of the lore riiiight ^.^
Sleve McDichael is a national hero! How dare you slander him like that!?
MGS3 is my favourite game of all time, so this remake has a high bar to clear.
Metal Gear Solid is several hours of trying to get through the dam underwater portion without the little girl drowning until the disc melts and all your left with is rage and slight PTSD. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Got it. Metal Gear is basically Kingdom Hearts levels of storytelling.
Damit Jesse ! Now i have to watch your Revengeance lp again :D
Oh yeahhh
The Liquid arm bit is silly, but at least better explained in MGS4 lol.
Fitting in all of this in under 23 minuets is kinda impressive well done Jesse
7.06 -- so Big Boss is Sean Connery??
Fun fact: Vamp is named that way not because of his vampiric behaviours. It's because he's bisexual. That's the in-universe explanation as explained by Pliskin in MGS2 following you first encounter with Vamp via Codec.

Basically all you need to know walking under boxes 📦 is overpowered
Otacon's name is just a combination of Otaku and Convention
Odd... I played a different NES metal gear 2... "Snake's Revenge" which I think was in zanzibar land but had a humanoid boss with the bottom of his feet as the weaknesss, not a metal gear. I did not recognize the game displayed here... "solid snake"?
Liked and comment to boost.
I can't believe Mr. Cox doesn't know about the lush tropical jungles of Soviet Russia
Have you ever thought in making Warhammer Lore videos
Kojima should work on Kingdom Hearts man, that series is starting to make too much sense again. I feel like he'll be credited with working on KH4 for some reason :P
Where is Santel?
