Set the wheel on at least two of the clamps, then close them in. If you’re scared of scratching a wheel, you can feather the pedal. That inches the clamps inward.

Honestly I’ve seen at least 30 tires get destroyed by being too far out when trying to break a bead. The closer to the wheel you can get the bead breaker the better. The bead is made up of a steel wire wrapped in rubber. The guard is on the bead breaker for a reason. The higher in the sidewall higher risk your probably going to be buying a new tire when the issue could have been avoided.
