- Today I’ll be sound testing a vintage 1963 Harmony No. 910 classical guitar, an all solid wood model made in Chicago. I’ve chosen to restring it with Augustine Black, which are authentic to the time period.

Thank you for saving this beautiful guitar. What a treasure you got there! 😍
Thanks, Florentin! I appreciate it!
Beautiful
Comfortable
Thank you
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
I have this same guitar, bought as a teen back in the 60's, it was 40.00 new. I just dug it out of the closet earlier today first time in 50 yrs! I really enjoyed your playing, WOW, I wish I could play like that, thanks for the uplifting concert!
Thanks, Marcia! If you ever have a chance to upload yours, I'd be interested in hearing it. I traded my Harmony last year to my friend who helped me load the moving POD, so at least I know it's in good hands.
@@Josh.Vanjani I'm 74 now, haven't played in 50 yrs, call me crazy, am but I am picking up the guitar and starting all over! Relearning some chords and hoping to play some simple songs at some point, wow, I'd LOVE to be able to play like you do! Don't think I'll live long enough at this point, haha!
very helpful and informative video!! Nice presentation of the guitar!
Thanks, Muse! I appreciate you coming back to comment again too! I lost about 15 likes and 50 views when I deleted the first one, but I didn't want to look back on it a year from now and regret the quality being at 360p.
Very cool guitar Josh Great sound yes these strings are better can tell the difference Happy to watch again 🎸
Thanks, John! Yes, there was an issue with the quality setting, for some reason it was stuck at 360p and didn't process the HD, so I tried uploading again. I didn't want newcomers to think that was representative of my channel's quality.
Full watch 🎸
Super movie, good job, thanks for sharing. I really like watching new and interesting places. You have an interesting channel, so I'm staying and watching. Big like and full support, stay connected.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Great guitar with deep resonance ! It also sounds like Augustine Black contributes to a mellow sound. Especially Carulli's piece was very good👏 Much enjoyed ! Nice video and great work Josh ! 😉 Terry
Thanks, Terry! Yes, it does have a good deal of resonance. I'm considering keeping it for a bit longer before selling for that reason.
Like! Good of you to rescue this guitar! The sound quality seems pretty good to me, especially for an older guitar. Great job with restoring the strings!
Thanks! Yes, I was also surprised how nice and full it sounded. That's 1960s craftsmanship, stuff was made solid back then!
Thanks for reminding me of the Carulli op. 241 pieces!
Thanks, Tomas! Anytime! I'll do some more pieces from it soon. I've just been a bit too busy to really learn much new material, hence why it's easy to do one of these sound test videos with the same material, but in a different presentation. One of my next videos will be the 1978 Di Giorgio guitar I won at auction with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides.
@@Josh.Vanjani No wonder your nails seem worn out, haha!
@@tomasericsson8720 Ha ha, yeah and I trimmed them down to be more businesslike at work. Shorter nails haven't been too bad. I may go back to no nails again sometime and do Tarrega and Sor pieces. But I'll wait until after Christmas.
you are sooo productive and professional !!! the thumbnail made me click but the entire video is sooo cute love the aesthetics and your editing 🥰💕
Thanks! That's great to hear, thanks for the feedback!
Really loved it - nice playing, Josh! Such a sweet and mellow sound. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Thanks, Kathleen! Yes, it's got a nice balanced sound, I think because of the solid wood. Have a great weekend too!
The back wood looks so cool, different than most classical guitar nowadays
Thanks, Pedro! Yes, I thought so too! The back and sides are more like an acoustic guitar, the wood is very solid. Wait until you see the Brazilian rosewood back on the Di Giorgio 1978 classical guitar I won at auction! I'll have a sound test of that one up soon, once it gets cleaned up. It's Thanksgiving week here in the US, and hence fairly hectic.
Wow I played a couple of Di Giorgio guitars, it's quite known here for being 'the first guitar of players' and most of the older Di Giorgio guitars have a vintage sound that it's impressive for a low cost instrument. I'll be waiting for this video!
Quick note: I uploaded this yesterday, but due to a glitch the quality was stuck at 360p with no HD available for processing. I didn't want that to be representative of my channel's quality, so I thought it best to try and upload again. This time, the quality came out correctly. 😎
@Todd Lane After a video is released, I always do a quality-control check 3 ways: 1) On my computer, 2) on a cell phone and 3) on my TV to make sure things look OK. In this case, things didn't, they were still pixelated. When I pulled up the "Stats for Nerds" it said the resolution was 360p. There was also an option "Missing Quality Options?" under the gear. When I checked in YT Studio it said "SD Processing Complete" but it wasn't processing the HD, it was totally blank. I double-checked the resolution on the video I uploaded and it was indeed 4K. So, I concluded it was a glitch and decided to take action. I scheduled it for morning and did a quick quality check right before its release at 10AM, finding that it had indeed processed in full 4K overnight.
Sounds really good! L#24 I think it is cool that you test vintage guitars!
Thanks, Mette! I'm hoping to make some money selling them. I made $100 from selling the Sears guitar in the last string review. 😁
That is really nice! With your expertise in music instruments I bet you are good at restoring them!@@Josh.Vanjani
Sounds beautiful 💕👍
Thanks! I agree!
Great sounds..I love it ❤️

nice lovely sharing your talent
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
Played very well !
Thanks, Wayne! Glad you enjoyed!
Oh very nice!! Like this tone
Thanks, Hayes! Yes, it has a fuller tone than I expected for a smaller guitar. Nice vintage sound!
That has a much nicer sound than I was expecting for a "rescue guitar" that's been rather mistreated..!
Thanks, Steven! Yes, I agree! This same philosophy could be applied to rescue animals too, that there exists a misconception that all rescue animals are "bad" and not worth adopting. At face value, this guitar looked like a lost cause, but with a bit of TLC there was a gem underneath the surface.
@@Josh.Vanjani yes, completely agree! My neighbour's cat was abandoned and a near-death wreck, but now she is gloriously good company, I adore her visits. And of course, as you may know, Bream's first Hauser guitar was a rescue instrument: he got it for five quid from a woman who evidently had not cared for it and had not the slightest idea what it was...
@@StevenWatsonMusic Wow, I didn't know the story behind Bream's Hauser! And glad to hear your neighbor's cat found a loving home! 🙂
this sounds really nice honestly, it doesnt have that nasal-mid focused sound i would have expected from a small body like that. Its a well balanced guitar, the grain on the top looks interesting. I like old things, dont know why, i want a vintage guitar too :)
Thanks, Felix! I know what you mean, I've characterized that as a "boxy" sound, but I like your description better. The grain was definitely one of the most appealing parts to the guitar. I might contact Harmony to find out more information about which woods were used.
@@Josh.Vanjani That's birch all the way, fellas! Birch top, sides, and back. It's a highly underrated wood IMO. Harmony used it a lot and it's good stuff.
@@tateharmann3057 Thanks for the info, Tate! Wow, I would have never guessed birch was used for making instruments! We have a lot of it up here in Maine. I specifically like using it for my fireplace in the winter, because it smells so fragrant.
@@Josh.Vanjani I agree birch is lovely to smell and look at! I don't know which specific birch species they used but it had to be big whatever it was. My Harmony birch guitar is over 15" wide at the lower bout and the back and top are one piece! No bookmatching done there lol. So the trunk had to be at least 16/17 plus inches in diameter. I don't know about Maine but here in Minnesota I don't see many birch that big. 👍
@@tateharmann3057 Wow! Well, we do have some bigger trees here, I'll make a point of paying attention to the birch trees next time I go on a walk in the woods. This gives me an idea: both spruce and maple are native to Maine, so it'd be cool to have a local Luthier craft a guitar out of local wood! I might Email Toby Rzepka and suggest it.
Excellent rescue!
Thanks, Axelle! I appreciate it!
Hi Josh, this a nice classical guitar, thanks for nice presentation, have a nice weekend, warm greeting from Indonesia ~ Ariyanie here
Thanks, Ariyanie! I appreciate it! Greetings from Maine in the USA!
Bella chitarra Josh!
Grazie, Frances!
Excelente video 👏👏👍
Muito Obrigado, Aposentado! One of my next videos will be with a 1978 Di Giorgio No. 28 with Brazilian Rosewood that I won at auction!
Very nice
Thanks, Antony! I appreciate it!
Hi from South African vloggers

Thanks! Greetings from the State of Maine, in the US!
Guitar properly saved. Pretty sure the previous owner wasn't the guilty party about the strings. Goodwill doesn't know anything about guitars. They probably restrung it because one was broken or received it without any strings.
Thanks, Bart! Could have been Goodwill, because those strings were almost brand new looking. Interestingly, I found out that Barrios used steel strings from time to time, because gut was hard to come by in South America, etc.
I just got one for 70 bucks. I and thrilled with the guitar. They were a little sloppy with the hide glue
Right on, Chris! That's around what I paid too. If you upload a video of yourself playing it, I'll check it out, I'd be interested to hear the sound similarities.
haha poor guitar, thanks for rescuing it! sounds great
Thanks, Nick! Yes indeed, this guitar is playing like it was intended to now!
I'm curious to see if model, No. 910 means that is 910 in the assembly line. Too bad it had steel strings on it. Probably has caused the high action issue. Sometimes people get guitars their hand and they don't realize that their actions can cause damage. Especially for a something so vintage.
Nice work on restoring some history!
Thanks, Justin! I agree that the action and bridge lift were caused by the additional tension of the steel strings. And whoever put them on did it in a unique way I'd never seen, wrapping the steel through the ball end loop like one would do with nylon. the strings were fairly new, with no corrosion, so my best guess is that someone restrung their grandfather's old guitar, tried to sell it, and after they were told the repair costs exceeded the value, took it to Goodwill. Good guess on the number, but the 910 is just the model number from the catalog. It was the smallest classical guitar size, or "parlor" shape. It sounds horrible, tinny, vibrating, muffled, muddy. Personally I would have left it RIGHT where it was
That's surprising, Brian; since your ears are accustomed to hearing chainsaws, I'd have thought you couldn't get enough of something with sound qualities like what you described.
