To be fair Megalania portrayed as a buffed up Komodo Dragon kind of makes sense when you consider that the Komodo Dragon is a buffed up Monitor lizard.
Oh my goodness your right
It's the same genus too so depicting it as such makes sense
A Very Good & Fair Point.
Komodo : buff monitor lizard
Megalania : more buffer monitor lizard
Clearly you know nothing of other monitor lizards lmao
Komodo dragon : I'm the biggest lizard
Megalania : hold my Diprotodon juice
Mosasaurus: Get a load of this tiny mofo
Speculative Mosasaurs: Oh yeah??
For any commenter, I just wanted to have fun so don't take it seriously.
@@SharksandDinos godzilla: i dont exis- i mean OH YEAH??
mosasaurus hoffmanni: HAH losers
The biggest Megalania media that scared me as a kid was in one of the cryptid episode of Lost Tapes titled "Devil Dragon" on Animal Planet, where an amateur adventurer is trying to make a pilot episode of his 7 day survival reality show in Australia, find some human bones before then finding the Megalania's den and gets bitten. he treks his way to an aboriginal village before then his body succumbs to the infected bite mark and gets dragged into the dark of the forest a few miles from the village he's trying to get into
My favorite Megalania depiction would be from Land of list monsters/ Monsters we met. In it, the mega reptile certainly looks like a unique animal that it truly was instead made of being depicted as an overgrown Komodo Dragon. I think filmmakers should depict Megalania with a unique depiction of colors and patterns.
And probably megalania has different coloration from komodo in reality
For some of the larger size estimates put Megalania back around when the Jeff Corwin documentary came out had the maximums reaching nearly 30 feet! But that one in particular had a habit of buffing animals for better visuals, but helped cement a lot of prehistoric creatures in my eyes back in the day. The giant spider bit in particular, of watching Jeff dissolve in front of my eyes haunts me a bit to this day.
Megalania: The bigger and more dangerous Komodo Dragon.
One lizard i never thought anyone would mention
I loved how you were scared by both Smilodon and Megalania as a kid and reminds me of how the Diggers from Dinosapien terrified my younger self.
The modern Perentie of Australia has some beautiful colours, it’s also quite a menace since it’s so fast and smart.
The legacy of big lizards is still going.
Very glad that you mention ,,terrestial"- people do not realize that snakes and mossosaurs are lizards :P
So for example anaconda is bigger lizard than comodo dragon :P
Wasn’t this the main predator of procoptodon?
Also I feel like all games nail the Cenozoic creatures almost completely accurate
Probably cause it’s easier to link them to modern relatives.
Sure birds are dinosaurs but they’re still totally different from them.
Love this series. So glad you covered Megalania. I had no idea there were so many interpretations of it in media.
I remember seeing an ad for La Brea and that apparently a lot of things were being pulled into the time portal like knights and even dinosaurs. so that might explain why megalania is in the show.
Ofc they are australian😭😭
And by example that means Komodo dragons have Australian ancestry
Im pretty sure that "crest" shouldnt be visible and that its a common trait of monitor lizards, but i could be wrong
I believe you’re right. I’m not too knowledgeable about that specifically, so I mostly avoided bringing it up.
Yes it is
While they sadly never show it on screen, the Animal Planet found footage horror series "Lost Tapes" had an episode about Megalania. *I think* they show drawings of it but don't remember it that well, but they usually would show over-stylized drawings of whatever cryptids they'd cover. But in the episode it's stalking and hunting a Bear Grylls wannabe survivalist trying to film a pilot for his show, believe it does bite him and wait out him bleeding out/dying to infection, so surprisingly a bit accurate for what's basically the Ancient Aliens of Animal Planet
Oh yeah, I remember that show!
Lost tapes was sick, wasn’t real but very cool and fun
Since you also do other prehistoric creatures and not just dinosaurs do you think you could do a list on Arthropleura at some point? Love your content btw :)
Absolutely!
Haven't watched La Brea, but now you're making me wish it should've been added in Far Cry Primal and maybe Jurassic World Evolution 2. Jeff Corwin's Giant Monsters was my introduction to the creature, and I loved it in Monsters We Met, technically it was the US version of the show titled Land of Lost Monsters, but I enjoy the original version more like all BBC shows, haha.
the Megalania from the isle kinda looks like the Megalosaurus in Crystal Palace
Thanks, Scorched Earth Explorer Note Man!
Just found this channel and I really like it!
This video is great and it helped with a project I'm doing. I'm creating my own Godzilla universe and my version of the King is based on an irradiated Megalania, so all these depictions really helped me visualize my version
I’m planning to make a video proving why Megalania isn’t still around today since there are people who think it is still around.
Great idea!
thats the name of that Australia doc, finally
There is one portrayal you forgot. The episode of Lost Tapes called Devil Dragon, about a guy who gets lost in a forest in Australia, with what a lot of people think is suppose to be a megalania.
Hell yeah!! Megalania is awesome!!
La brea is kind of confusing; it’s actually filmed in Australia but has California animals for some reason. Also surprised you didn’t bring up the fact that Komodo dragons can reproduce asexually, I don’t know how common it is but apparently if a female has trouble finding a mate cause they live on islands she can clone herself so that her daughter can pass on her genetics.
Some of the colours for these designs appear to take a lot of inspiration from Australian Perenties
I’d like to see a video of that but about t interpretation of woolly mammoth or maybe entelodonts
By any chance would you be willing to cover Kaprosuchus in media?
Any of the Land Crocs would be good
I’ll add it to the list of suggestions!
@@prehistoricchannel128 Thank you so much. :)
The megalania episode of Monsters resurrected is my favorite of the series!
Yay!!!!!
Can you Do majungasaurs next please
Now that I remember, I do have a meg in PoT and I haven't grown it yet. Time to play it, I guess
I enjoyed this! Also so did my dog 🐕 he didn’t move throughout the hole episode
can you do The MANY Interpretations of thylacoleo that would be interesting
Fun fact: Komodo dragons are sort of more like a small megalania, than megalania being a giant Komodo
Basically at the time V. komodoensis evolved, giant monitors, such as megalania were actually much more common, and V. komodoensis is sort of just a left over remnant, hence why it’s so heinously big compared to other monitors :)
Got to say as a Australian myself I quite like the depictions of megalomania in both jurassic world alive and the concept art from the isle, in truth a mixture of the 2 are what I imagine megalomania to look like in real life.
Have you considered doing a review of the 2005 Peter Jackson King Kong film? It's one of my favorite films and I'm curious about what you thought of the "dinosaurs" and creatures in the film.
I haven’t considered that, but I’d absolutely love to!
In the mockumentary tv show Lost Tapes they also have a guy being stalked by a still-living megalania in the australian rainforest.
there is a Megalainia in a Minecraft mod called "Fossils and Archeology: Revival" and its actually the first ever time i had seen Megalainia
0:57 The Megalania is not a only ancient animal that is usually portrayed as a scaled up version of it’s close relative but there are other ancient animals They are usually portrayed as their modern counterparts such as a Dire wolf is sometimes usually portrayed as a scaled up Gray/Grey wolf as well as the Megalodon is usually portrayed as a scaled up Great white shark in most medias.
Titanaboa as well, a beefed up Anaconda is how it's usually depicted
@@govardhanposina17 Yeah sometimes.
Would love to see a vid on Dienosuchus.
It is one of the coolest reptiles
Though never shown The Lost Tapes had a Megalania dedicated episode
Suggestion:Maybe do The MANY interpretations of dimetrodon or postosuchus
10:16 Holy shit!! It's a slurpasaur!!
Of course it would be in Australlia.
There's also a Megalania in SyFy's "Ice Road Terror". I'm not sure if it is a Megalania so you can correct me if I'm wrong 😅
The Megalania is one of my Favorite Prehistoric Apex Predators.
Megalania was basically nature going what if Mosasaurs but on land
Woooo the big boy
Komodo Dragon: A Jacked up Monitor Lizard
Megalania: A Monitor Lizard on steroid really really jacked up
Not a creature I expected to see next, but welcomed nonetheless. I hope you do other non-dinosaur creatures like the Mammoth, the Dodo bird, and marine reptiles such as Mosasaurus, Plesiosaurus, And Tylosaurus. Also, for actual dinosaurs, I’m hoping you get to Pachycephalosaurus at some point.
I loved Australia a time travellers guide
Though they were an extant species, the Komodo dragons in the 1999 film “Komodo” were huge! At 4 meters long the most I think and were quite beefy thus behaved far deadlier than their realistic counterparts due to living on an isolated island being polluted by an oil company. Though the “bacteria bite” was used in the film and is inaccurate, these things were smart like normal Komodo dragons, if not, smarter! I think they would make a very awesome and excellent interpretation for Megalania, period!
Would be so cool to go to the zoo and see one of these
And the main character from Jurassic Park was inspired by him.
My favourite animal of all time
Hopefully this means you’ll tackle Titanoboa, Sarcosuchus and Deinosuchus in the near future.
Amazing I found eBay on a book
Look like design found one
Called prehistoric animals of Australian 1983
I saw the megalania drawing appeared look like
I will never forgive you for making me watch La brea Dino guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not only was the show hirrible but any excitement of seeing adaptations of the animals was squashed by how badly they used/portrayed them.
Some Dumbo might ask about dinosaurs being the biggest lizards.
I love Komodo dragons and megalania
Many interpertatians of deinosuchus
my fav animal is also the komodo dragon 🐉
Hey man i play path of titans but i happen to megalanias often and i always lose
we can basically clone them their dna still didn't expire so we might see them along side mammoths in that prehistoric park in russia
Bro, and cenozoic survival and primal haven megalania 😭😭
Mega Predators is the best documentary! Fight me!
Mosasaurus and utahraptor please ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Megalania is in the same family as Komodos, Snakes, and Mosasaurs
technically anaconda's are the biggest extant lizards. but if you dont count snakes, then komodo dragons are.
I hadn’t even considered that through phylogenetics we could classify Snakes as lizards, the same way we classify birds as dinosaurs! I reckon you’re right!
@@prehistoricchannel128 exactly!
The crest isn't actually supposed to be there! Its called a sagittal crest, its just for muscles and other tissues. All monitors have that but obviously we dont see it in life. A lot of other animals have it too, like gorillas for example
8:56 this behaviour is called tripoding!
Triceratops deinosuchus and more please ❤❤❤
Path of titans player here lol. Megalania!
The many interpretations of Rhamphorhynchus
Just a suggestion
Megalania the lizard Monster This Goanna and that ceno beasts on the list
Because of course the Komodo dragon on steroids lived in Australia 😂
To play devil's advocate, linguistically speaking, Megalania is far more of a 'dinosaur' than Megalosaurus or Iguanodon could ever be. ;)
ITS MEGIN TIME
Megalania against Homo florisiensis 🦎🐵
6:03 Program name?
it's the giant monitor lizard
Where can I watch Monsters Resurrected for free?
Have you ever met the famous JACK HORNER??? HE IS REVERSE ENGINEERING CHICKENS 🐔 BACK INTO DINOSAURS 🦕 HE'S CALLING IT
"""DINOCHICKEN""
Play roblox games. Prior extinction , dinosaurs world mobile, prehistory, crnozoic survival, extinction
And where's wildcraft animal sim online's Megalania boss?
10:16 An Acrolopholania
no]
Megalaina is obviously the real tyrannosaurus rex aka t rex
Yay ones upon Australia and we met monsters and mega predators and I forgot the animal planet doc and death of the mega beasts and monsters resurrected and prehistoric assassin and AUSTRALIA TIME TRAVELING GUIDE my favourite and those are all the ones that I watched
Why is it called Varanis now 😭😭
That's the genus name for all monitor lizards, megalania is its common name.
It’s just been placed under the Varanus genus (same genus as modern day Komodo Dragons and other monitors) but many still call it Megalania for the same reason that we call Panthera leo a lion.
I think you may have missed one more depiction. It’s from the Ark Animated Series creatures on UA-cam where they show possibly a Megalania. I’m not too sure but the definitely looks like one.
Megalania’s inclusion in La Brea was pretty cringe!
pooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooopy livard
I'm always really annoyed when animals like Megalania are reconstructed as just huger modern animals. Especially when the model quality is garbage. Just using the pop cultural preconceived notion of a modern animal and artificially inflating it, immature behavior and a terrible look for anything even vaguely in the business of teaching the audience. Really putting the "boy" into awesomebro fanboys.
Pretty glad there's an increasing trend to avoid that recently. Bemused by the Isles attempt to have their Komodo-cake and eat it too, but the Isle is almost always good for mixing some quite interesting and some utterly baffling design choices together.
I’m the 69th like >:)
Megalania is just a buffed komodo, who agrees?
👇
Komodo is a buffed up monitor lizard so it checks out
I mean komodo dragons ARE native to Australia 0:22
How so?
@@prehistoricchannel128 sorry for not replying but my long comment is getting constantly deleted idk why
