Amen amen amen because those AI narrators are horrible. It's not even their fault because it's the way they were programmed. One day I'm sure they'll do a wonderful job but until then just let a human being do it who can actually create more engagement in the story as well as more emotional depth.
Now I know where Elon Musk came up with the names of two of his drone ships. (I wonder when I come across the origin of drone ship "A shortfall of Gravitas.") [2:28:50] Chamas's friends, two GCU ships, "Of course, I still love you" and "Just read the instructions"
"Tech visionary Elon Musk and musician Grimes have expressed their love for "The Player of Games" and the Culture series, cementing its status as a must-read for science fiction enthusiasts." this is a really weird endorsement for a 1988 novel, especially given Musk's fallen reputation and Grimes'... honestly I'm not really sure why Grimes liking TPOG is noteworthy at all
grimes is weird and quirky, except like, actually weird and quirky. i dont really fuck with her music at all but her internet presence is funny at least and cool at best so Its nice to see a weirdo celebrity thats not really problematic or controversial give praise to an underrated series. Wild af and random tho for sure lol
I remember reading this in my youth back in the nineties. I can't remember finding it that impressive, nowhere near the same league as Frank Herbert's Dune or Greg Bear's Eon.
@@friedspacecowboy8760 As an adult I look at it as a perfect example of how libfilth like Iain Banks really believe there will be no unhappy ending to the current path of Western civilization. He thought, back then (as too many still do) that we can just have this utopia of hyper-abundance and total decadence, letting all of the morals of our ancestors go to the dustbin. He is of course totally wrong as shown by the current situation in Ukraine: the AFU is constantly complaining about recruitment and soldier desertions. They've started deploying women as a quick fix. How much more acute will the problem not be once we, the men of the West start getting drafted to go fight and die for our corrupt politicians? And among those forced to fight there will be more than a hand full of men who will patiently wait for the perfect chance to cause maximum damage to their own side before surrendering. Unless we can somehow return to the stoicism and self-sacrifice embodied by the Christian faith, the source of Western greatness, it will be time to learn Russian and Chinese.
It's not really trying to be either. A relatively small-scale character-driven drama, in which lies its worth. The sci-fi aspects are a backdrop, not the focus.

fr. fuck the idea of copyright after the creator is dead. unless its specifically given to someone else to cater to. If every author pulled a tolkien, we wouldnt have Cthulu in the way we do; cause 75% of cthulu shit was written by other dudes.
My favourite book of all time
Appreciate the narrator being human doing justice to the story

Same here. It was clear to me from the very moment I heard the barge was named like that.
yet another example of Musk's cluless lack of self-awareness - subtract his wealth and he's a 100IQer

And how do you feel about it now as an adult who must participate in The Game.
Same here.
Except it sh*ts on Eon from 10 thousand feet 😂

Surely this book is not out of copywrite or used with permission.
Ian Banks is unfortunately deceased: I doubt he cares
