What a huge and wonderful surprise to find my childhood hero posted here! I was just talking about the shows I watched as a child, Sky King being my favorite. My Dad had a plane and it was very "normal" in my youth to be around it, in the barn where the runway was the tractor lane, too! Today, these Americana memories are all but gone, and these kinds of "hobbies" are now reserved for the rich and famous (or at least their wannabes). We were just an average family, with a Dad who had an interest in how things worked, which led him to find his rattletrap plane. He bought it for practically nothing, I think $500, if I remember correctly, and he hauled it out to that barn. When he pulled it back out, his co-workers and brothers and sisters were all there, prepared to laugh. Nobody laughed, but they sure did line up for their ride! I am 65. I’m 72 and remember watching this show 1960-1963. It was this show then Roy Rogers n Dale Evans then Lone Ranger and then Mighty Mouse and other cartoons. That would never happen today but it should. This world would be in much better condition.
Same here...shy of the flight instructor part. But the main thing that sparked my interest in flying was growing up close to the Kelso, Washington airport. Kelso was where Molt Taylor built and tested the "Aerocar," flying car. I was about 10 years old when I met him. And then there was Penny. :-)
64 and as a boy Sea Hunt and Sky King was my favorite TV shows. One other show was the sky diving dectives but can't remember the name...maybe Rip cord?
I'll be 70 shortly and I too remember this well. Always watched Sky King, Rifleman, Lone Ranger, and Have Gun Will Travel. We were lucky to have enjoyed them!
68 in November her, born in '53...(I can't believe..68.!! eh ) I remember the show name but also barely remember the show. I do remember being outside playing, guess we didn't watch much tv then. On into the sixties, I watched a lot of kids tv shows.
I remember Sky would land on a public road to catch the crooks. My favorite show was Whirlybirds. I loved helicopters all my life, going on my first ride on a Bell 47 at 20.
The old shows were rather simplistic, but entertaining. One thing you can't help but notice is that this was a 30 minute show with a full 25 minutes of content. Now, a 30 minute show is 20 minutes of commercials.
I became friends with Kirby Grant when he was the Host of Florida Festival in Orlando, Florida. Kirby WAS Sky King. A real "Down to Earth" Gentleman who loved flying and meeting his fans.
I'm 67 and grew up watching this as well... I have been an A&P mechanic all my adult life. Wow...I look and watch this now and see just how much life has changed. While a bit hokey, it is good to see how life was...when we all respected each other and God and family was a thing. Thank you for the memory...
Wow, I loved this show when I was a kid in the 50's. I got to see and talk to Sky and Penny when they made a personal appearance at the old Charlotte Colosseum. They were the celebrity guests at a horse show. While the horse show was going on the children were allowed to go back stage to meet and talk with Sky and Penny. They also gave us an autographed B&W picture of them standing beside the Song Bird. I kept that picture taped up on my wall for years. At the time meeting them in person seemed like the biggest thing that ever happened to me in my 10 years.
I'm 69 and watching Sky King for the first time. It's nice to see the old shows from my childhood. Been binge watching the old western series like Laramie and The Virginian lately.
I used to watch this all the time as a kid. Sadly, one of the most contrived shows of our youth. Nobody fights crime and bad people from an airplane. Still liked it, though.

I used to watch Sky King on Saturday mornings during the late 1950’s/early to mid 1960’s. Nabisco was a sponsor. Chrysler furnished the cars in the mid to late 1950’s.
I'm 68 and just learned for the first time, from this episode, that his name is Skyler "Sky" King. Had no idea. I'm now golden in every trivia contest for the rest of my life!
I'm 67 and this show, in re-run syndication in the very early 60's was part of our Saturday morning routine which included at least four of these 1950's syndicated series. Among the others were Fury and Whirlybirds.
I’m 74, started watching every Saturday morning at the ripe young age of 4. In those days we had a TV that either took nickels or quarters to enable time viewing from a roof top antenna. A guy would come by every several weeks to collect. We lived in a very rural area on PA. Ha! The good ol days!
I'm a little younger than you(60), but I do not remember anything like you mention. Using change to pay for tv viewing time, or ever hearing of anything like that.
I am 68 years old and I remember watching this show. What I did not know was that it started out as a Radio Program. Of course that was pretty much the norm back then.
This was a show I watched as a youngster. As I recall TV had lots fewer channels, 2,4,7,9,11,13 and later 3 uhf channels 27, 33 and 53. With so many fewer channels than today it is surprising how much better programing was then vs now. Most folks had black and white TV and color showed up later. This was also the last decade that most Americans thought the future would be better. American industry was the envy of the world, and nearly everything was made in America. Most households had 1 working father and a stay at home mother. Children were generally well supervised as somebody's mom was always around to keep an eye on things. There were no cell phones, internet or personal computers, calculators were going to be decades into the future, although adding machines were around. I really miss this era and shows like this will take me back to what was a happy time for most of us that were growing up then. Thanks for posting this gem from the past.
I watched this as a kid . Later the series changed planes from a Cessna T 50 Bobcat to a Cessna 310 in 57’ . I flew in a 310 when my friend was working on his instrument rating . It was a beautiful bird .
I'm 66 and grew up watching these old shows. I have logged time in both the Cessna 310, and the Beech D-18. Never got to fly a Cessna T-50. Three years ago, Meniere's Disease has grounded me for life, but I still love to go fly with friends. What intrigued me was the old Culver Cadet, Penny was "flying" in the race. Extremely rare these days.
70 years ago (appx) this was a Saturday morning "have to watch" , along with Lone Ranger, RinTin Tin, The Shadow, Buffalo Bill Jr. Along with some others that I can't remember because I've been using this memory for 80 years, and it's worn out. BTW, they were all live action shows, not a cartoon in the bunch.
I remember SK being the last kids show on Saturdays, and the announcer saying "Sky King! *aircraft roar, Nabisco logo zooming on the screen* "Brought to you by NABISCO! *aircraft roar*
Use to watch Sky King every week along with Rin Tin Tin. All shows were in black and white. I can remember when my parents got our first color TV set. Back then, all shows went off the air at 11pm, being that there was no cable. I'm now 66. Can remember my first flat screen. Ha.
I am 66 and watched the show also. Your comment about three TV stations made me remember that there were only three stations that we could receive when I was young. I have a sort of funny story that shows the difference between 1958 and today, as related by an older sister. One of my brothers who was in the Air Force at the time came home on leave. He returned after boot camp and spending more than a year away from home. He saw that our dad had bought a TV after he left for the Air Force. When he saw that there were three different TV stations, he reportedly asked, "How in the world can you all watch so much TV?"
I remember this on Saturday mornings watching as a small child. I thought airplanes were so exciting, like magic and I loved the sound of them. My dad worked for Douglas as an illustrator and his paintings of airplanes were all over his art studio in our garage. I still have some of them and treasure them.
I`m old now, but I wasn`t always this way. Back in `66 or `67 I was hitchhiking back to the East coast & was stranded for a good while in the desert [Arizona or New Mexico] & it was summertime & I was getting seriously dehydrated. Finally I got picked up by this wonderful old guy who had a couple of gallons of water, of which he invited me to partake of & I decided to not be shy & had at it. He said he was a pilot & heading to the southeast for a job of crop dusting. Nowdays most people wouldn`t even know what that is. Anyhow, this old guy [probably 40`s or 50`s] said that he was the actual pilot in Sky King. He seemed so real that I believed him. Even if it was bullshit, who cares? It was a great story.
Kirby Grant (Sky King) would have been delighted to hear all these inspiring stories, he was a big promoter of aviation and later the space program. A fine actor and gentleman.
In '56 I was four years old and we lived in Playa del Ray Ca.in post war duplexes on the beach. The yards were sand and the Pacific ocean was 100 yards away. You couldn't get any beachy-er.That's when I first saw uncle Sky.
Wow in 1956 I was four years old as well, and lived on the beach in Playa Del Ray. My uncle had a big apartment building right on the peninsula. His company was Marshall Builders, he did a lot of development in the area. He had also bought the property right on that lagoon, then later the city forced him to sell it.....
I must have been 10 or eleven when I met sky king when he came to John's supermarket in Wenatchee Wa. On a publicity tour. Wish I still had the outographed picture. Would give all of my days for one more year of the 60s.
Watched this on our black and white TV. It had rabbit ears, so the reception was hit and miss. Lived near Texas City, TX and all the TV stations (3) were way up in Houston.
I still have a picture I drew in crayon of Sky Kings airplane ,there was so much air and space stuff going on back then it was mine blowing for a kid. Cheers

I used to watch sky King on Saturday mornings in New Jersey. Fury also!
Yep. Watched as a Kid. Inspired me to become a Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor.
Ha! I watched it religiously every Saturday morning, from age 4 thats why I became an Army helicopter pilot in 1966.
Kids of the greatest generation...we had the best... parents who loved us...
64 and as a boy Sea Hunt and Sky King was my favorite TV shows. One other show was the sky diving dectives but can't remember the name...maybe Rip cord?
I remember this TV series as if it was yesterday.
I'll be 70 shortly and I too remember this well. Always watched Sky King, Rifleman, Lone Ranger, and Have Gun Will Travel. We were lucky to have enjoyed them!
Sky King and Howdy Doody were my favorite television shows.
I am 68y.o. and barely remember this show. Was good for a little kid like me back then.
I am the same age, and I remember it well.
68 in November her, born in '53...(I can't believe..68.!! eh ) I remember the show name but also barely remember the show. I do remember being outside playing, guess we didn't watch much tv then. On into the sixties, I watched a lot of kids tv shows.
I used to love this show when I was a kid. I'm 69 now. It really helped fuel my love for aviation. Whirlybirds was another show I loved.
I love this show.
I remember Sky would land on a public road to catch the crooks. My favorite show
was Whirlybirds. I loved helicopters all my life, going on my first ride on a Bell 47 at 20.
I had forgotten about Whirlybirds! Omg thanks for the memories!
UH1 at 19.
The old shows were rather simplistic, but entertaining. One thing you can't help but notice is that this was a 30 minute show with a full 25 minutes of content. Now, a 30 minute show is 20 minutes of commercials.
...and no content.
Back when we understood TV was thought provoking fantasy entertainment🤔 today it has to be real because folks can’t think for themselves
old shows are more real.
Yes some watching commercials in place of the shows it really sucks
That's why I pulled the plug on my television service in 2007. It's been 14 years and I don't miss it.
I’m 32 and usually watch shorter videos but I watched this entire video and wow what a cool show! Pennys the best, buy her an airplane sky king!
At the time of this episode, Penny was a licensed pilot...!!!
60 years old , you are too young to remember SKY KING. I’m 77 and watched the weekly series every week. Great memories
@@dejavu666wampas9 • And honestly, the bag of lime would’ve likely busted through, killing both bad guys, and Sky would’ve gone to prison for life, savagely violated by all the bad guys he had put away for years, and the current president would’ve droned on about how Sky was a racist..
Sorry but it’s the unfortunate truth. Jesus is coming again, though, and THAT is THE truth!
In late 1975, in Tucson Arizona, went to an airshow west of the city @ Ryan Airfield. None other than Mr. Kirby Grant, Sky King himself, emceed the whole show!! What a cool time!! Yes, just a 2nd -rate actor, but was one of my TV heroes!! Great to see him in person! A true gentleman!
Anyone here remember “I MARRIED JOAN”
with Joan Davis And playing her husband Jim Bacchus The future shipwrecked Thurston Howell the third and of course Mr. Magoo!
I Married Joan is in the public domain (copyright has lapsed), and there should be episodes on UA-cam or at Internet Archives.
@@nordvegfigg7746 : OK thanks for the info! Are used to Enjoy That show when I was a kid!
Yes, both of us were fans
I watched this show when I was 5 years old and later, cartoons like Supercar and Fireball XL-5. Now at 68, I'm a retired Corporate Pilot and proud to say my son-in-law Captains a Corporate Falcon Jet. I owe it all to Sky King.
Penny was so cute ,made my 11 year old heart flutter back in 57,simple time's.
I used to watch Sky King on Saturday mornings during the late 1950’s/early to mid 1960’s. Nabisco was a sponsor. Chrysler furnished the cars in the mid to late 1950’s.
I'm 76..and I watched Skyking as a child! Look at those "old" planes. 🤔😅
I'm 68 and just learned for the first time, from this episode, that his name is Skyler "Sky" King. Had no idea. I'm now golden in every trivia contest for the rest of my life!
Same here.
Me too! How we missed that was his name, I don’t know lol
Ditto!
I'm 67 and this show, in re-run syndication in the very early 60's was part of our Saturday morning routine which included at least four of these 1950's syndicated series. Among the others were Fury and Whirlybirds.
LOVED THIS SHOW. WATCHED IT ALL THE TIME.
TV is over as far as series. This was the golden age. Like Hollywood had its golden age.
I am 68 years old and I remember watching this show. What I did not know was that it started out as a Radio Program. Of course that was pretty much the norm back then.
I’m 64 and remember watching Sky King. I liked it so much I took flying lessons. I never had time to finish but my daughter is multi engine jet rated.
I watched this show also Im 66 now and have flown several ultralights a lot. I love flying.
This was my favorite TV show, as a wee lad. Probably what started my infatuation with flying.
Love your screen name.......that show was a magnet. When you watch it now Penny seems so corny. What happened to the good old days?
@@scottgorman7166 Those days are long gone . Personally I would hate to be a kid in this day and age .
Penny was the Saturday morning heart throb of all New York youths!
I'm 73..faithful watcher when I was a kid... Saturday mornings.
I'm 71 and we loved SKY KING back in the day! My brother became a pilot.
Loved this show. I was fascinated with flight. Watched every saturday...yes, I'm 70...(I also was in love with Penny
Sky King inspired me to go into the Field of Aviation as a career.
I remember SK being the last kids show on Saturdays, and the announcer saying "Sky King! *aircraft roar, Nabisco logo zooming on the screen* "Brought to you by NABISCO! *aircraft roar*
We got our first TV in 1951 this was a regular watch for me. We had 3 channels to choose from. Sky King first aired in September of 1951 on ABC.
I'm 71 now
I never missed an episode 😁
Let's not forget " The Cisco Kid and Andy's Gang "with Andy Devine!😂😂
Every time I see a twin engine fly by I think of Sky King and of course, Penny
Grab your fig newtons and settle in for Sky King.
Throw in some Bosco or Ovaltine, too.
Sky King was my hero when I was 3 or 4 😎👍 what great memories
Man, I remember Sky King.... I used to have a cereal box toy (small plastic plane)......long, long, ago!
Yes, I remember that! I had one too!
Use to watch Sky King every week along with Rin Tin Tin. All shows were in black and white. I can remember when my parents got our first color TV set. Back then, all shows went off the air at 11pm, being that there was no cable. I'm now 66. Can remember my first flat screen. Ha.
When I was a boy I watched this series all the time. I loved it!😀
Chef Daddy Jack brought me here!! I grew up back in this time and never really remembered this show. So marathon time!
One of my favorite shows as a kid. I grew up in Hampton Roads, Virginia, had 3 TV broadcast stations in the area and AM radio. Miss those days.
@@usamwhambam Funny! Yep, things have really changed.
Looked forward to Sky King every Saturday morning as a kid.
I remember this program... Watched it every Saturday morning...
Good clean entertainment! Can't be beat.
Loved this show. Had a crush on penny😉 anyone remember the episode were he landed songbird on an aircraft carrier?
Going to have to research , that one. Was more interested in the planes , Not Penny. Guess I was just to young for that.
I remember that episode.
I wasn’t interested in Penny because I was a girl, duh. I missed that episode but will have to look it up!
Watched this when I was very little.
I loved this show ... grew up in planes. my Dad had Pipers & Bonanzas 😊
These are from my early childhood. I love them.
I'm seventy my Saturday morning favorite Sky King
In '56 I was four years old and we lived in Playa del Ray Ca.in post war duplexes on the beach. The yards were sand and the Pacific ocean was 100 yards away. You couldn't get any beachy-er.That's when I first saw uncle Sky.
Wow in 1956 I was four years old as well, and lived on the beach in Playa Del Ray. My uncle had a big apartment building right on the peninsula. His company was Marshall Builders, he did a lot of development in the area. He had also bought the property right on that lagoon, then later the city forced him to sell it.....
Like everyone else, I watched this every week and enjoyed a life long love of small aircraft.
What you didn't have aluminum foil on those rabbit ears? Man you were not high tech over there in Texas
Cartoons & Sky King just about every Saturday morning til 12:30
Don't forget The Three Stooges.
@@davidevans3175 And Roy Rogers.
The good old days. People were genuine. I remember as a kid.
I still have a picture I drew in crayon of Sky Kings airplane ,there was so much air and space stuff going on back then it was mine blowing for a kid. Cheers
Brings back good memories. 🛫
