Pema is a Tibetan whose plans for the future are being thwarted by his past. He is his parents' only son, and they want him to return to the village of his birth, marry a local girl and take care of them. He and his sisters spent their youth in a children's home in the city, while his parents stayed behind in their remote Himalayan village. Together with his sisters, one of whom was adopted by a Dutch couple and grew up in the Netherlands, Pema goes to visit the distant village. The only way to their family's home is a 10-day trek through the mountains.
After a warm reunion, tensions quickly rise: the parents expect their only son to accept his responsibility, get married and tend to their land. But Pema can't imagine life in this isolated place devoid of computers or books, and he also wants to save his sisters from a similar fate. With spectacular cinematography of the mountainous landscape as its background, this documentary presents a sensitive generational conflict that reveals the contrasts between choosing for a primitive life in the mountains, the future that parents want for their children, and the extinction of traditions. Pema and his Westernized sisters don't want to abandon their parents, but they also look forward to their own, modern existence.

I felt the struggle between the parents and the son, they sent to the city for a better life and now they want them to come back and take care of the parents. They have gotten used to a life in the city and it is unfair to expect them to uproot their lives at command. I feel bad for the eldest sister, she looks older than 26. And what a pity to want to keep birthing just for survival
I just watched a documentary "the last cavemen". The head of the family is a man living with his family and his grand children in a cave in the forest of Palawan island of Philippines. His reasoning, my ancestors lived like this and I now live like them, my children will be. What would you do if you have parents with such mentality?
They basically got rid of there kids. They grow up in an educated world and now expect them to follow a tradition they don’t know.
I feel bad for everyone involved. But they dump their kids at an orphanage.

She said "they said because you...". She probably went to a doctor and the doctor could have said that the stress could be affecting her health and the reason for the stress could be her worrying about her only son not wanting to follow their traditions.
We all agree that stress can affect your health, right?
Like I said in another comment, oriental Asian traditions and culture are very very different from western traditions, culture and values.
For example, in some Asian countries, the oldest son will not be able to go to school and work hard so the younger children will be able to get an education. And he is also responsible for taking care of the parents when they're old.
It's a choice but it's also a responsibility in that culture that they were raised in.
For ex. If you were the oldest son and your parents had to work all day away from home and you would be responsible to taking care of the younger ones. They're not your children, but the right thing to do would be that you take that role. It's something similar but that guy in the doc, case was far more important.
I have a strong feeling one way of what I think he should do, but then I completely see the other side. This is a crazy dilemma to have.

What an odd thing to say. Perhaps the problem is within you? I don’t have a lack of love or affection in my life. My family and friends would do anything for me, and I’d do the same for them. Search your own heart before blaming entire cultures.
No doubt, what a sad life you must lead. My greatest joy in life are my grandchildren. My oldest grandson is 6 and he spends almost every weekend with me and as much of summer break as I can get him. I see my son and daughter several times a week despite them both having their own homes, kids, jobs and relationships. I'm living with my 88 yr old grandmother so she can stay in her own home and my mother and brother come over or we go there for diner a couple times a week. So understand that you don't speak for me or my family.

This video brought tears to my eyes😢 and that doesn't happen very often. We take so much for granted in the western world. As women, how lucky we are.
In America the journey to where we are now was rape and pillage. The only reason we get to "enjoy" our Western lifestyles is exploitation of poor people sometimes in places just like these. Especially in Africa where we mine for expensive metals we use in our technology.

I posted an update above, but he and the Danish sister stayed in Netherlands, both photographers, little sister returned to the village, got married and had kids. Parents moved to the city because they fell ill
Western influence always brings walls between family and culture, obe example this Gurung family. We cannot blame the parents because they are with a strong tribal culture, and we cannot blame either the children because they saw the beauty of the outside world. The children should he the one to adjust because they literate and work hard to support free their parents from poverty, on that way they will convince their mother that they are not stubborn but loving children, May Gos bless this channel and the Gurung Family

I looked online! He lives in the Netherlands and is a successful photographer, parents moved to Kathmandu for medical care, little sister got married, had children and lives in the village but "volunteers at the small village school and is determined to make sure all kids are educated" meaning the parents were able to guilt her into coming back after finishing her tenth year. Danish sister is doing great and also posts photos on Instagram

The place is wonderful, but it's so remotely far away from everything that you need to reach; school, hospital, grocery store, etc. Man, i can't live there either, for life. Maybe a couple of week vacation just to unwind, but that's just it😅.
Culture and tradition, for so many that accept modernization, that's what makes your dream stop if you're not gonna fight for your dream against it.😢

Prime example of a manipulating mother, emotionally a b u s i v e. She tries so hard to guilt trip him and his sisters. The Holland adoptive mother is a good mom to his sister. Mothers like these wonder why their children don't talk to them, she was more conserned about helpers than a better life for her kids. If you find yourself in a similar situation don't walk, run, run as fast as you can to chase your dreams.
It's a totally different mentality and culture. You cannot judge through the view of our modern and western values. For example when the father mentions that his family lived there for generations(Maybe for centuries) and thats how its supposedto be. That's how a culture dies off, the people start to leave the traditions of the village and it dies out.
Living in big cities with a mix of cultures, the deepest and highest values of each and all cultures are watered-down over time.
You would be the selfish one if you wouldn't feel torn apart, conflicted between taking care of your aging parents or the choice of following your desires. If you're still young, that's understandable but once you mature enough, you'll know it was not easy for the guy and the little sister to choose.
@@gk9k00I come from a 3rd world country with a similar culture, and a similar situation, with an abusive and narcissistic mother. Don't tell me how to view things. I've seen many parents in this same situation support their kids. They are clearly miserable and want to share that misery with their kids. Children have the right to choose their own path, they don't owe the parents nothing, they didn't ask to come to this world. This is gonna fall on deaf ears but I don't care. My message is still the same. Anyone in this situation, please choose to chase your dreams if your parents truly love you they will support your decisions.
When I mentioned another culture being different, I meant oriental Asian culture. Which is an entirely different culture.
The Asians idea of shame and honor, in my opinion, are not understood by westerners and even some younger generations of Asians themselves. For example when samurais would commit s*icide because they have shamed their familys name.
If you do not truly understand traditions, culture and the history of your bloodline, you don't know yourself better than the next person knows about you.
But I did not disagree that the guy could also follow his heart, as he did because it's an old doc, and leave the family. I just pointed out that it was not a simple decision for him personally.
Selfish parents. Having kids so they ended up living their staying stuck, taking care of them. That is no reason to have children. Other than that great documentary. We do take so many things for granted in the USA. We are so blessed 🥲 I wish blessings for every person in the world.
The parents don't want to break the chain, they want their children to be poor just like them toiling the farm and taking care of their animals so sad. I hope and pray that Pema and his sisters from abroad will finish school and have a good job to help their parents financially to hire people to work on their farm. May God bless them.
