Not only does it cover real Pacific Islander mythology, but it's based on the real-world thousand year period where anthropological evidence suggests they completely stopped traveling between islands. They were voyagers, stopped for a full millennium, then began voyaging again, and nobody knows why.
The scene where the ocean parts & Te Kā comes racing across the seafloor towards Moana, only for her to see what she really is and help her break through the pain and rage is one of the most well-crafted and beautiful moments in animation, period. The same goes for the "I Am Moana" sequence.
When this movie came out talked to a Polynesian friend of mine and he said they did right by the Culture. He said the only thing "wrong" was Maui. He was too Small. In their faith He was nearly 8 feet tall with oh so many MORE Muscles with a bigger Ego. So 5 Gold Stars to Disney.
Maui is different in every Polynesian culture. For us Māori, Maui was actually slim and not bulky. He was also very naughty, kinda similar to Loki of Norse mythology in a way. Even our children’s stories didn’t shy away from all the bad things he did. He had siblings and his hook was made from his grandmothers ( Murirangawhenua ) jaw bone, she gave/gifted it to him

Dwayne Johnson was perfect as the voice of Maui, he captured his personality perfectly especially when he does his Battle Cry every time he's in the moment that calls for it
Auli'i Cravalho was only 14 when she first got cast... All of Hawai'i is so proud of her... The voice of Moana's mother (Nicole Scherzinger) is also from Hawai'i, and although the Rock wasn't born in Hawai'i, his mom was, and he attended public schools in Hawai'i for four years...
and photos of The Rock's maternal grandfather in his Polynesian Chieftan wrestling costume were used as reference for Maui. Again, not Hawai'i but closer culturally/geographically
The part that gets me every time is when Moana is package things to leave and her mother catches her. Instead of trying to stop Moana, her mother just puts a few more things in the bundle and hands it to her.
The animation sequence when Te Ka is crawling towards Moana is probably the most stunning moment in any Disney princess movie. It gave me chills when I first saw it. Especially when the heated wind starts flowing past Moana.
Also my best friend told me that for the animation of Moana's hair (and the other's curly hair) that they invited a bunch of curly haired people and asked them to essentially flip their hair for the animators lol
There’s a hilarious clip on UA-cam of Alan Tudyk recording his lines for Hey Hey the chicken and at the end he says while laughing “I went to Juilliard”🤣🤣
I love message in this story about discovering who you are but also being able to appreciate your culture and still being able to bridge the connection without denying your needs and denouncing your culture.

Opetai Foa'i, who wrote much of the music for the film, sings Tokelauan in "We know the Way". Look up his long-established group, Te Vaka (the canoe). Wonderful stuff, and expect more of it in Moana 2.

Even though he only appears for one scene, Tamatoa is still one of my favorite modern Disney villains, and "Shiny" is one of the single greatest vilain songs ever. Ron and Jon were like, "we may not have a traditional villain in this movie, but we're making a traditional villain song anyway." Jermaine Clements' vocals are so good.
Facts! He was perfectly cast & nobody could have pulled off Shiny like him. My nephew was about 4 when this came out and it was played daily so I learned the words and would sing along.

I've always felt that the reason the ocean didn't help more or didn't return the heart to Te Fiti is that it wasn't the ocean's part to play. Moana and Maui were destined to do it, and the ocean played their part by setting Moana on the journey. I can never watch this movie or reactions to it without tearing up multiple times. such a beautiful film! 🤩
I remember seeing it twice in the cinema when the film was released... Because it was and is very moving, I was always moved by the culture, the animation, the history and songs. It is a beautiful film and yes, it always moved me to tears.

The language is Tahitian, which is part of the Polynesian group of languages. Polynesian languages belong to the larger Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family. Malayo-Polynesian languages include those spoken in Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, most of Indonesia, parts of Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as Madagascar’s native language. The Austronesian homeland is believed to be Taiwan, where the non-Malayo-Polynesian branches of the language family are still found today. This means that while Malayo-Polynesian languages spread far across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the other Austronesian branches stayed localized to Taiwan. Edit: I some how forgot to mention Samoan, Tokelauan, and Tuvaluan
The song in which he queried the language being "barely used or Aramaic" was We Know the Way which has a bit of Samoan, Tokelauan and English. Tokelauan is a living language, it's just that there are relatively few residents of that nation compared to world standards.

The Kakamora are from Polynesian mythology, where they are small, hairy spirits with sharp claws known to be secretive and dangerous. In reality there were short-statured people of the Solomon Islands who are believed to have inspired the myths ... which rather suggests that the Polynesian people in general did not think highly of those specific people. So the way they are depicted in this movie fits reasonably with the lore.
