Welcome back! I actually only got into photography 3 months ago, and hence technically found (and watched nearly all your videos) since the hiatus. Absolutely love the vibe of your videos and the invaluable information you give, hope all is well
I've bought it yesterday (Ttartisan 35mm 1.4) for recording podcasts with two people in frame and maaan .. this is a great lens for the price. I've used a sigma 16mm 1.4 but the autofocus always screwed the recordings so I set it to fix focus - but the lens was so close that the focus area became the issue as it was a couple of cm on f1.4. So I had to go down with aperture which made the DOF less visible, however I like DOF in my scenes. The Ttartisan 35mm 1.4 is the perfect choice for me because now I have a longer focus area (about 30cm in f2) and I can get even better DOF because of the focal length. Now both of us are in focus almost all the time and the lens distortion has disappeared as well. Now we look good on camera :D. Perfect lens for these kind of cases. And it was 90$ (in Hungary) .. ridiculously cheap.
I love to see you are back! I actually missed your videos and checked your channel. I hope UA-cam recommends your videos again c: You are a kind person.
Thank you so much for making this comparison video. We're so lucky nowadays to have all these affordable third party lenses available to us, and that's just in the 35mm range. Several years ago, when shopping for my first camera, I passed on Fuji because their lenses were just too expensive when compared to other formats. I can see now that's changed with a variety of interesting options out there.
Please check out the TTartisan 25mm f2. After using the TT 35mm f1.4 for a couple of weeks I went ahead and ordered the 25mm for something a touch wider. It is a beautiful lens, both in build/form factor (practically pancake) and image quality. It could easily be the subject of an entire video! It's been on my camera all month.
I agree, that is also something I would love to see. Video review would be nice about that exact lens or even something similar like this current video, but to compare 23ish mm lenses. Andrew how do you rate the 25mmF2? Do you still own it?
Good to see you back. Also I love those candid photos you are able to take. They’re just so special. Hope I can start getting some pics like that of my family.
Fuji 35 f/2 is my absolute favorite, I used to have the Mitakon (mark 2), but ultimately the f2 from Fuji is everything I want from a lens on my X-Pro3
I was surprised to see a video from you! It's been a while. It's been so long that I've switched to Nikon and don't shoot Fujifilm anymore but still enjoy watching your videos anyways! Hope to see some more videos :)
Nice comparisons. I have owned and used the Meike, TTArtisan, and both 7Artisans (also the Fujichron f2; even the Viltrox 33mm). The only one I still own is the 1.2 Mark II. I needed a versatile workhorse at the 50mm focal length, and am way more comfortable with manual. I researched, found the Mark II, got it, took 2 shots, and, for the first time, audibly said, “Wow.” Everything about the shooting experience with my X-Pro3 was exactly what I needed & wanted. Funny that your summation of the lens-that some would find negative because they want “character” and amazing “sharpness in the corners”, etc.-is something I can appreciate. I am a doc guy, and the Mark II isn’t trying to be sexy or a one-trick pony. Just puts in the work, is reliable indoors and out, and, at least mine, feels built to last a while.
I'm looking into getting one of these and I'm also leaning towards the 7Artisans 35mm F1.2 here. It's really small in size yet having one of the widest aperture and acceptable image quality amidst these budget lenses. I know the TTartisan F1.4 is more popular since the price per value is outstanding, but I don't mind shelling a bit more for something even more compact and a tad better low light performance.
I own the 7artistans f/0.95, and I'd just like to comment that on the first day I owned it, I dropped it three to four feet onto a hardwood floor. To this day, I don't think it was damaged at all and still works perfectly.
These tests are so valuable! Thanks a lot! It's one thing to test one lens and find it decent, but where differences really show is if you got more than maybe 2 to compare!
Glad to see some new content from you. I know it's not in the "cheap" category, but I love my Fuji 35mm f2. I'd save my money and look for a used one (which is what I did). Interesting video.
Welcome back Andrew! Love your fuji content. Had both the Mitakon and 7artisans f/0.95, they are pretty good lenses, especially with the 7artisans. Image quality they are really close to each other with the Mitakon being a bit sharper. However, I replaced both of them with the Fuji 35mm f/2. I find the fuji to be the perfect balance of weight and image quality for stills. Yes only for stills, it focus breath like nobody, a big no no to video.
The Meike 35mm 1.7 is surprisingly sharp. I put up some images with it at 2.8 and my Fuji 16-55mm at 2.8 at 35mm and i was embarrassed that the Meike 35mm 1.7 was sharper in some instances lol...
Thank you very much for the honest review. I personally got in a occasion the .95 which I love to use even thought it loses focus when I turn down the camera. I'll try contact with the company to fix for sure.
Interesting. My version of the 7artisans 35mm1.2 mark2 is the best manual lens I've owned incl 4 Leicas. Depending on how you use it it has amazing character and is great for portraits and streetphotography. Not a landscape lens but still does the job. The prints coming from this lens has a real analogue vibe. I actually use it more than my XF35mm1.4 and would never swap it for the xf35mmf2. I've shot thousands of images with it and learned how it works the best. I never shoot charts or brickwalls though. / Johan O E
I'd love to see a video comparing which vintage 35mm lenses you'd recommend adapting to Fuji X mount. I know you did previous videos comparing lens adapters, and found significant differences between adapters and even between copies of the same adapter. But still, it'd be interesting content.
Thanks a bunch! Already had the TTArtisan in mind based on Andrei Dima's recommendation, nice to see that many people like it. And the dirt cheap Fotasy could be fun for an almost lomography kind of vibe!
I just bought the 1.4 you picked as favourite, it's good to see I made the right choice especially considering the price.I bought it as a stepping stone for the upcoming voigtlander, I just wanna make sure I like manual focusing and that the focal length suits me, I'm pretty sure it will but I'm on 27mm for now and I'm not loving it so far. Anyway, thanks heaps for this super detailed video, it was very helpful!
I heard the f1.2 voigtlanders weren't actually that much sharper or better than the TTartisans, but maybe worth it for the build quality and metal contacts. But for price I'd probably prefer just getting the xf 35mm f1.4 (or used) and using that to MF + can AF when you need or want it.
I had the TTasrtisan and it's very sharp. Maybe sample variation but honestly, the xc 35mm f2 makes all these kind of redundant IMO. It's just too good.
I have both the 7artisans 1.2 and the 35mm f2 from Fuji. I think for me is just worth pick up the f2 as the 7artisans has a horrible pincushion distorsion and pictures look weird. Although manual cheap lenses are super fun!
Hey Andrew, good to hear from you. Always loved going on those abandoned sort of places shoots with you in your videos. Is there a vintage 35mm you'd recommend? I have two vintage lenses I bought very cheaply and use on my XT-3 that I like, the Canon FD 135mm f3.5 and the Pentax 50mm f1.7. But, it would be nice to have a 35 and maybe a 28 as well. Have a great day!!
The answer to this question, is the one you can afford. Better to have the lens option than not have the lens option. If you like it, you can always upgrade.
Thanks for creating this video. It is nice to see review of gear that does not receive a lot of hype. Also like the practical nature and openness of what imperfections in a lens can bring to creative photography. Your video helps broaden perspective from pixel peeping to creativity. Wish there was more vids about creative photography, including documentary.
My first reaction after you listed all of the lenses in this comparison was: where is the appropriate Laowa (Venus Optics) 35mm lens, because that's bound to be very good? But of course, there isn't one exclusively for APS-C other than the much more expensive and enormous 33mm f/0.95.
Why not consider the Fuji XC 35mm f/2? This gives you same optics as the XF lens and it has fast autofocus. It's plastic and not weather sealed, but it is light, small, and only costs $200 brand new. Used copies cost $150-175.
@@kingsamvisuals I bought a copy of the XC 35mm f/2 a couple years ago, when I got my X-H1. I did not think spending double on the XF lens was worth it, if it has the same optics. I have no regrets. Saving that extra money also allowed me to buy a used copy of the Rokinon 12mm f/2 ultrawide lens.
