    • @oceanthresher6184
      @oceanthresher6184 2 місяці тому +1

      Yes the trade was bad, but everyone’s acting like LA gave up two first round picks to get him. The contract extension was worse than the trade itself. Also, the Jets and Kings both got blown out in the first round and face a future of mediocrity, so where exactly is the “win” for the Jets here?

    • @clueplays2086
      @clueplays2086 2 місяці тому +2

      @@oceanthresher6184 I think the “win” for the jets comes when you look at the fact that Dubois was traded for 4 assets 2 of which are solid roster players for the jets. And even if the trade was a one for one vilardi for Dubois I think Winnipeg STILL wins the trade. Dubois had 40 points in 82 games last season and vilardi had 36 in 47 games played. And when you look at the big picture it gets really ugly the kings traded Rasmus kupari Alex iafallo gabe vilardi and a second round pick for Darcy kuemper who is past his prime and has maybe 2 years left in the tank.

    Blackhawks won 3 Cups since 2010. Pretty tough to maintain that. In the end, they got Bedard and are kind of starting over. I think with Kane, Toews, Hossa and Keith pretty much gone or in decline, the overall concept of rebuilding makes sense after losing 4 of the best players to ever play the game.

    raise the floor on the salary cap by $25M and the ceiling by $40M and trades like these will stop. As it is, teams have a choice to stay under the cap: trade the guy and get something for him, or lose him and get nothing to show for it, because teams cant afford to pay everyone what they want and stay under the Cap.

So the hawks got korchinski out of that trade as well as Paul ludwinski, who may look like a quality steal MAYBE, from the draft and a 3rd rounder for this upcoming draft. Miller trade wasnt worst trades of decades, Lighting won two Cup row after trade and was in Stanley Cup finals three time. It was cap tump trade. Winning Cup is only thing whats matters. Trade winners should look like that. After Miller trade Tampa won 2 cup, how many cup Miller won? None. Zibanejad trade happened cuz owner was cheap. Zibanejad was on his bridge deal and was due for a big pay raise in the future. Meanwhile Brassard's contract had front loaded bonuses that the rangers already paid so the salary the senators owed him was around 3million a year with 5million cap hit. Its meaningless meddling that made me gave up as a Senators fan. They had a lot of very good homegrown talent, that were thoroughly developed and paid their dues in the AHL and were basically loyal to the team and franchise but just gave up on them for practically nothing.

    I am going to approach this in a different way... I think one of the worst trades for all parties involved was the Panthers and Flyers trade in the 2021-2022 season. Stick with me here... This trade was supposed to put the Panthers over the top. Sending Owen Tippet and some sweeteners to the Flyers for Claude Giroux. Giroux while productive down the stretch, was basically a non-factor in playoffs for the Panthers. Now here is where the trade gets crazy for me. The following year, Giroux declines to sign with the Panthers missing out on an epic Stanley Cup run. imagine if Giroux would have stayed with the Panthers. Tippet on 25 is a 50+ PT scorer who I believe on the right team could do even more. Giroux ends up in Ottawa on a bad time. In end, FL got nothing for this trade and lost a good young talent. The Flyers missed the playoffs. Giroux being the biggest loser if the deal didn't get to lift the cup.

Gaudreau left for nothing, they got a decent defenseman, and a decent winger…. it wasn’t the trade that was bad especially considering the position the Flames were in… it was the signing huberdeau to a contract paying him for his career year instead of paying him a reasonable salary… if his salary was actually on par with his skills instead of for an outlier season then all is fine.

    Canuck fan here, and I'm shocked the Oliver Ekman Larsson trade didn't make the list. OEL was so bad for the Nucks that he was bought out, and his buyout is gonna cripple the Canucks for years to come. The 9th overall that was traded to the Coyotes turned into Guenther, who's looking like a star in the making.

    • @erikhogberg6635
      @erikhogberg6635 2 місяці тому

      That trade made no sense (from canucks perspective). Being swedish myself I always though OEL was underrated during his prime and somewhat held back by playing in a fairly bad team, so I always looked upon that contract he signed with Coyotes as a sort of "reward" contract (loyalty/long-time service) and that he was sort of destined to finish his career in Arizona. Then for some reason Canucks take over this lengthy, expensive contract for a player past his prime, just to off-load another bad contract (that was close to expire). Why didn't they just buy out Eriksson's contract instead? That would have been so much cheaper and less staining on the salary cap. Mind boggling...

    Erat/Forsberg trade basically got the GM in Washington (George McPhee) fired. Long story short- his replacement pieced together a better lineup and they won the Cup in '18. That pretty much got everyone in DC over this trade, but it was a major annoyance up until then. Not sure Forsberg ever would have gotten the ice time in DC to develop into what he became in Nashville. And after all that McPhee goes to Vegas and loses to the Caps in '18, but wins it in '23.

    Difficult one with Panarin.. of course he is a top 3 winger in the league but when they traded Panarin, they already had 3 cups within 5 years and looking at it right now, having Nazar, Korchinsky, Bedard and likely getting Demidov or another top talent this year, they set themselves up for another good run in couple of years. Keeping Panarin would help them stay on the top for couple years longer but inevitably they need to go through a rebuild. This way they got a generational talent in Bedard

    Caps fan chiming in here. The Forsberg trade isnt just one of the worst trades in the past decade. Its arguable one of the top 3-5 worst trades of all time. The real question is, do we win a cup with Forsberg? My thinking is if we have him signed, we dont go out an acquire Oshie who helped win the cup due to cap restraints. But would we have won in 2015 or 2016 when we were heavy favorites with him on the roster or even not at all? Who knows

    The Tkachuk trade was honestly fair value for the Flames. The issue isn’t with the trade itself, but with how Calgary immediately signed Huberdeau to a massive extension despite totally not needing to, and trying to keep being competitive, despite having a woefully insufficient roster.

      I was shocked they didn't let him play for the season before signing him...the Panthers had switched to that new offensive system and huberdeau had barkov feeding him pucks, so of course he scored...if they had bothered to look at his past record he'd never came anywhere close to 100 plus points. The great thing about Weeger leaving is I didn't have to hear my husband scream, Oh Weeger anymore...plus I still have bad memories from game 3 against Tampa when Weeger decided at 3 seconds left in the game and the score tied, he could just skate off the ice leaving Bob totally unprotected and the lightning scored...that game was followed by the potential strip club incident and a game 4 not only did we get swept but also shut out...yeah the Tkachuk deal was a steal

      Yeah lol I honestly don’t understand why the trade is always talked about as a disaster when it was 100% the contract. Obviously Huberdeau isn’t the player anyone thought at the time of the trade but even in hindsight they still got a middle 6 winger, a top pairing defenseman and a first round pick, still a loss on the trade but definitely not one of the worst of the last decade.

    The flames deal wasnt bad. It still wouldn't be bad if management didnt mismange everything.
    They got a 1st rounder witb it and just sent it to montreal with monahan for future considerations to sign kadri and then signed hubby to a massive deal. If they managed it better it wouldnt be "one of the worst in nhl history"

    The Tkachuk Huberdeau trade was an incredible trade. The Flames got 2 (theoretically) solid players and a prospect for Tkachuk straight up. The signings are what became a disaster. The trade itself was great. Don’t get it mixed up.

    Dallas Stars Find Jake Oettinger - Anaheim played 11 games while beating Calgary and Edmonton in the first two rounds and Eaves played in seven, which meant the Stars would pick 29th in the first round in the Ducks' slot. GM Jim Nill then swapped slots with the No. 26 Chicago Blackhawks, sending the pick to the Windy City and selecting, wait for it...Jake Oettinger

    This is evident that you don't know anything about the Flames. There was no way the Flames could of won with Tkachuk and Gaudreau. Tkachuk was invisible in the playoffs for Calgary. Johnnny too. Tkachuk wasn't a key player for Florida in their Stanley cup run. He is grossly overated. Yes Huberdeau has been terrible but Weeger has been amazing. This trade wasn't one for one. So to say we lost this trade is absurd. We also recieved a first and a prospect. Well done considering Tkachuk had us over a barrel. Tkachuk is one of the most overated players in the NHL , He is super Lazy.

    You’re placing a high premium on being able to evaluate these trades after the fact.
    Several of the trades you mentioned, at the time, we’re either well received (CAL/FLA) or well understood, due to context (Panarin).
    The mark Stone trade in particular, I remember several TSN analysts, saying this might end up being called the Fabian Brannström trade.
    There’s a difference between say the watch trade, which was bad when it happened, and bad, after the fact. And a trade, where you use the benefit of foresight to judge it.

  • @Polytrout

    Bad trades aren't always a reflection of bad management. Circumstances often dictate bad trades. General managers often knowingly make trades in which they give up more than they obtain. Sometimes it's cap related while other times a player is not so good for the rest of the team in the dressing room or the team has an abundance of one type of player and a pressing need for another. Maybe they're in rebuild mode. The list goes on. Matthew Tkachuk is what Florida needed when they were building up - he was one of the final missing pieces. Not so sure that Calgary was or would be stronger have been with Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau bu a Cup contender????? The Flames will recover soon while the Panthers dismantle and Columbus goes nowhere. At least Florida and Matthew Tkachuk got their Stanley Cup.

    Excellent analysis. I love the way the commentary is balanced and includes the salary cap realities, but digs into the truth of just how one sided some of these trades are. Tkachuk for Huberdeau is the worst trade of the last ten years. I get that Calgary was under the gun, but... as a Leafs fan? Brad Treliving did not seem to be the GM to sign. Hoping I'm wrong. Not sure that I am.
