  • Why have a hardcover option?
    Some people like it
    Makes the paperback look more attractive. Consider a book with a hardcover for $29.79 (so it’s $30) or a paperback that is $18.99. That’s a ten-dollar savings just for the paperback. Yeah, I’ll get that one. Having options makes it easier for a reader to say yes to your book (it’s also why you should have an eBook and audiobook).
    Trad pub usually puts out hardcover and eBook first and after a year of solid sales will release a paperback. They make the lion's share of the hardcover because they usually cost a lot more. But they also cost A LOT to produce, and that is for traditional publishers who have the money to invest in offset runs of the books and can get better economies of scale. For us self-publishing authors we have print on demand which is more expensive.
    Explain Print-on-Demand
    Print on demand, I don’t want to sound like I’m oversimplifying, but it is literally printed when it is demanded. The retailers don’t keep stock. Someone orders your book, pays for it, and the self-publishing platforms print that one copy and mail it out.
    Where can you upload your hardcover and have it available to readers?
    Amazon KDP (case laminate only)
    B & N Press (with jacket or without)
    IngramSpark (with jacket or without)
    LuLu (with jacket or without)
    BookVault (case laminate or cloth laminate, no jacket)
    (I swear Draft2Digital is going to add this option the second this video goes live)
    Amazon KDP and B&N Press are direct self-publishing sites. As in, you upload to Amazon KDP and your hardcover shows up on Amazon.com and only Amazon.com. You upload to B&N Press and your hardcover shows up on Barnesandnoble.com
    When you go with IngramSpark, LuLu, or BookVault - these are aggregators. They can push your hardcover to multiple retailers and once and even LuLu and BookVault offer integrations to sell directly to readers. However, a few notes:
    If you pick an aggregator ONLY pick one and do not accept distribution to any retailers you already have a direct listing with.
    Double-check that the exact trim size and format you want are enabled for global distribution. I’ve seen a few authors get tripped up on LuLu when the exact trim size and format they wanted could only be sold directly and was not eligible for their global distribution.

    M.K., this is an insightful video! I'm not seriously considering having a hardcover option available for books that I'm going to self-publish for now (although I will make paperback and ebook an option as a minimum!), but it is intriguing that there are hardcover print-on-demand options out there!

    Hey, I really love your channel! Recently subscribed and then you release this masterpiece...??? AMAZING. Thanks for making this. Perfect timing, since I'm considering making a hardcover version for my book (did a paperback and ebook first; hadn't considered making the hardcover first!).

    Greetings MK, I always enjoy your vids.
    I'm getting ready to publish my 8.5 x 11 color paperback Magnus Opus (aviation history for middle school and above) on KDP . I will also publish on B&N under my own ISBN and imprint.
    I'm an old geezer with old friends LOL, many don't do online purchasing, so I have published before on B&N. They prefer going to B&N stores for ordering.
    Currently, on KDP, the closest trim size is 8.25 x 11, therefore, I'm launching hardcover on B&N first, as I have experience with them and I won't have resize everything.
    My goal is to get my book into schools and libraries (I just received my LCCN), so will either go with IS or LULU for wide distro and library access. IS seems the best value for hardcover in wide distribution so far.

    I'm starting my first children's chapter book (ages 7-13). Is there a best font and font size for this age group? Also for book trim size? Do you use the same font/size and trim size for hardcover as paperback? Thanks.

    • @1MKWilliams
      @1MKWilliams  Місяць тому

      Yes, I usually use the same interior file (same trim, font size, etc.) for both the hardcover and paperback. In terms of industry best practices for that age range, I don't know because I don't write for that audience. I would suggest working with a formatter because they should know. 100Covers does both cover and formatted interior files: 100covers.com/?ref=49

    Hi MK. another great video! I will have ebook, paperback, and hardcover. Childrens book. Do you recommend Ingram over KDP for both print options? Second question, saw your video about print on KDP not being a pre order. So if I publish both print options on Ingram to set up for release on the same day as the ebook on KDP, does that mean ingram pushes my print books to KDP or would I need to also do print on KDP as well on or after official release date? thanks!

      Can I keep distribution with IngramSpark after my print pre-order launch?

      @@1MKWilliams Ok, here is the simple question, i know i got wordy in the last one. Ebook - KDP, Print - Ingram, both pre order. Once book is launched, do I add my print books to KDP or continue with Ingram?

    • @1MKWilliams
      @1MKWilliams  2 місяці тому +1

      @@scottludden4848 you can do either. Yes you can add the print books to KDP after launch or you can keep them with IngramSpark

      @@1MKWilliams I think i found the hack. Upload on KDP for Paper and HB and save the book there, do not go live, then go to IS and upload Paper and HB for pre order. Then on launch date, make Paper and HB live on KDP. awesome thanks.

    I’m almost done writing my novel, yes, I’m thinking about making it hardback cover. For my book do I have to keep the format like in time New Roman or a different font, do I have set it up as an A4 formatting. What should I have as far as chapters. If that makes any sense I doing my writing on google docs. I have it set as 12 for the size of words.

    • @1MKWilliams
      @1MKWilliams  4 дні тому

      So the book would need to be formatted into a PDF file in the trim size you want for the book. You can format it yourself if you are familiar with InDesign, Scribus, or Calibre. Or you can hire someone to format it for you. Elle does formatting: elleandrewspatt.fictionandart.com/for-writers.html
      and 100Covers can do formatting and the cover all together: 100covers.com/?ref=49

    Do you think dust jackets sell better than laminated books?

    • @1MKWilliams
      @1MKWilliams  2 місяці тому

      I think it depends on the reader, tbh. Some love the dust jacket, others discard it right away. I've seen both at libraries so my guess is they prefer case laminate but they'll take the dust jacket if they need to. I have noticed that large print hardcovers are mostly case laminate, if I'm wrong someone in the comments will say so

    • @adventureswithtime
      @adventureswithtime 2 місяці тому +2

      @@1MKWilliams Thanks for your input. I know libraries seem to remove the jackets. I was thinking more about the individual buyer. For them, I would think a dust jacket makes the book look more professional.
