What did I learn from Ross? Hah - too much to share in the space available here! What a great podcast. Insights from people who have reached beyond the perceived 'limit of what can be done' will always be fascinating. There's so much to be learnt from such great personal challenges... as I know from a 7,000-mile walk I once took. But a mere walk, of course, is faaaaar more achievable to the average human specimen than a 317 mile swim! Three. Hundred. Plus. Miles! Swimming!!!!! Truly astonishing!
Loved hearing Ross speak about his Dad. 🙌🏼 He sounds like an absolute legend. And Ross is undoubtedly the most polite savage to walk the earth so I'm sure he would be bursting with pride! 🤍
It’s the humility, humor, willingness to pay homage, and storytelling abilities of Ross that makes him not only amazing to listen to, but also places him at the top of my list of exercise science authorities.
It’s astonishing to me how such an intense conversation could be had with such a seemingly happy-go-lucky man. I just watched his documentary a few days ago, and I still cannot grasp how resilient this man is.
Really an incredible achievement. I once swam a mile without stopping. Took me a few months to get to that endurance level. Hard to wrap my head around the physical and mental game necessary to tackle such a grueling activity.
59:02 Ross you bastard, you might have held back the tears but I did not on my walk round the woods. Always difficult when you lose a parent but it was lovely to hear you talk about your dad. Big up Chris for getting this part of the conversation on record, something that should be clipped up and distributed as how to live life.
I am fortunate enough to have met these two men in person and they are two of the most genuine people. Thank you for asking the question at 57:16 , Chris. Thank you Ross for being my hero.
I have had the honour of meeting and talking to the previous record holder, Martin Strel. He swam 504.5km non-stop, just 5.5km short of Ross' swim. I have been following Ross for a long time, through the Loch Ness swim and the warm water swim. He has been a huge inspiration to me and I knew it was just a matter of time before he broke this record. I was very ecstatic to hear he finally broke it. Amazing job, hope I get a chance to train with you one day Ross!
As always, Ross is an absolute legend! Such a genuinely likeable Guy, who is fortunate enough to to be able to do what he loves. He pushes his body past all previously set limits and is always exploring that deemed 'impossible'. LEGEND!!
....and still smiling...👍. Ross amazed me, over and over again. Stubborn does not even begin to describe him. Phenomenal in its truest sense. Congratulations Ross. Very interesting video 👍
Yes Chris! was wondering when you'd get Ross on! an incredibly versatile athlete (climbing the height of Everest with your arms in less than 24h, the car pull marathon, etc etc) and his book 'Art Of Resilience' about his swim around Britain was the perfect North York Moors trail running companion audiobook during lockdown 2020.
Love this. Good convo, solid details and points for people to look up themselves. Useful questions to enhance info for the audience. More "podcasters" could learn from this.
This episode goes deep in maintaining mental & physical health. How many of you would be happy if you have the detailed notes of the podcast so that after listening this podcast you can have and read the important stuff in 10 mins anytime you want. Let me know your response.
It's funny I canoed half of his trip in 6 days. 😂 One question though: it says online that the Yukon river low average is 3 mph so the water travels 316 miles in 63 hours so around his time. I'm confused about the speed performance. What am I missing? Even he hadn't actively swum, staying in cold water for that long is crazy impressive 😂
It was a current and wetsuit assisted swim. Which is fine, and still a great adventure, but the nuances of Ross's crazy adventures tend to get lost in the fandom and podcast tours. I love his enthusiasm, his attention to sports science, and he seems like a really super nice guy, but he's also happy letting people describe him as if what he's doing is astonishing, when there are countless traditional marathon swimmers who routinely do crazy coldwater endurance swims without wetsuits and all the hoopla. Ross has never shown much interest in them, alas. Look up "Sarah Thomas" for example.
Any mention of his PED use on the pod? Or are we just pretending he’s a natty? Not taking away anything from his incredible accomplishments but would love the whole story.
Initially I disliked your comment, but then I walked away and thought about it, and you’re actually so right. It would be great to see what someone at this level is taking, not for myself but for anyone who may be considering PED usage in the endeavours.
@@illuminatiCorgi my point is that I have no problem if someone is on PEDs so long as they’re transparent about it and give us the full story. PEDs contribute to one’s performance significantly and omitting that is not insignificant.
Ross has spoken numerous times on numerous podcasts about his steroid use, he says that since he was a young boy he’s been competing in swimming competitions at a very high level so has never taken any steroids. Paired that with his self confessed super human ability to consume food at an unnatural level and the work he’s done in some of the best sports institutions and with the best doctors and nutritionists on the planet, I believe he may be natural. Also if you compare his physique to some of the other well known swimmers, I don’t think it’s outrageous to say he may be completely natural… Just my opinion though
Absolutely agree, by no way am I looking to discredit his achievements as peds or no peds the stuff he has put his body through is insane. But there is no way a 38 year old is doing what he’s doing without some extras
First of all, seems like you need to do this without a wetsuit to break any official records. How much buoyancy did his wetsuit add? Second, how far would he have gone down this river without actually swimming and rather simply guiding himself down the correct route? It’s impressive to float down a river for 60+ hours but that is not the same as “swimming” 300+ miles. This guy is smart and tough and can endure incredibly amounts of pain and discomfort but I get the feeling he hacked a system on his way to this “record”.
@@ericajean7899it's amazing what's been going on lately in coldwater extreme swimming, all without wetsuits and other aids. But aside from talking here and there with coldwater specialist Ger Kennedy, Ross hasn't shown much interest in traditional marathon and ice swimming.
