For people who are planning to attempt this, I have some notes:
- Make sure you have a pair of needle nose plyers (NOT JUST TWEEZERS) that are small enough to grip the bar while the door is in place. The angle is really tricky to reach, you'll understand what I mean when you do it.
- I saw some people mentioning a ribbon cable resting against the top of of the battery compartment, which could get damaged. Luckily, from what I could see, only the Canon AE-1 and AE-1 Program have that cable placed right above the battery compartment, the A1 has that same cable further to the left and out of harms way.
-For whatever reason if your door won't stay closed (mine for example didnt come with a latch) you can use the Canon AE-1/A1/AE-1 Program screw on grip to hold the door shut.
Good luck.
FYI: AE-1 Program doesn't seem to have the ribbon cable, check at 3:09 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/tOu-x5StyJ8/v-deo.html
Hi, it's worth mentioning that there's a piece of delicate electronics (some kind of ribbon cable) that the top of that battery door pin rests against inside the camera. If you imagine it with x-ray vision (or go look at a teardown elsewhere on UA-cam), you'll see that pushing the pin back up into the top of the camera may damage this if the cable moves to occupy the space the pin used to be in.
This video is the quick-n-dirty solution - and that's fine, but be slow and careful. The more 'proper' way to do it, which is admittedly a massive pain in the arse because it requires dissolving and re-applying glue to a couple of small, delicate components, is to remove the top chassis and feed the pin out and in again from the top - that way, you can hold the cable back with your finger to ensure you don't stab it.
Nonetheless, thanks for this useful video. I'm probably going to do it this way to save time and effort, and I'm fortunate enough to have a spare body to practice on.
Hi, thanks for the comment. You are right about the cable but experience teached us that in practice it is not a problem. Never broke one in 50+ changed battery doors.
The strip of electronic circuitry that runs above the battery door on the AE1 program is not located in the same place on the A1 so it is safe to change out the battery door as seen in the above video. I confirmed this by going on Flickr and searching images of "Canon A1" , there are photos showing a stripped down A1 and the routing of the circuitry. All of this being said, my replacement door and latch fail to lock shut when the door is closed, as these are not Canon factory parts, I am not surprised.
The AE-1 Program does not have the strip either. It seems it's just the AE-1 that does. Check at 3:09 in this video on the AE-1 P: ua-cam.com/video/tOu-x5StyJ8/v-deo.html
The door should close and latch on it's own. btw the tab on the hot shoe cover is made to unlatch the battery door without damaging it
Weiter so!
Does this work with the Canon AT-1?
And is any risk to touch the cable that some people is mentioning?
And last where can I find a good "door", the link from the description is broken :)
Thanks.
Thank you for the video! I cannot seem to move the battery door pin (I'm using a lot of force and needle-nose pliers). Do you have any recommendations on how to move it? Thanks again.
Hi, not much you can do besides maybe dropping a little light OIL like WD40. Good luck!
Could you please give me the project to print the door in 3d. I would really appreciate it
Would this work with an original part too or would you recommend a new one like in the video as all originals will be equally fragile now?
