So Gerber appealed to me years ago . When any sharp thing appealed to me . I feel like if you are getting into knives or just want a knife and don’t really care what it is , a Gerber is for you . They are great tools for non “knife guys/girls”. This one caught my eye when it was on drop . I just couldn’t see paying $35 for 7cr when you can get a Penguin in D2 for less . The design is nice , but I don’t think I would be happy having to touch up the 7cr all the time . That being said , this would be a great knife for a teenager . It’s a slick design with an axis style lock , and they can get very familiar with what it takes to keep an edge on a knife . Thanks for the video !! Take care JB .
I feel the same. This knife is a looker, but what am I paying for? The Gerber name??? What is that worth now when they put out a, "good effort" knife. If it was a $25 knife I may pick it up for a nice looking beater knife.
I agree completely Jason! There is just way too much competition out there for Gerber to still using 7CR at this price point. If they would even upgrade to 9CR I think they would be a little more "respectable" in that range! Thanks brother!!

Some days I still miss my Gerber Guardian. Sold it when we were short on money, and I don't regret the decision. And I'm not much of one for daggers these days. But I still miss it now and then.
Mine needed some work on a few issues. First I had to strop it pretty good to bring the edge around. Then I had to put some grip tape panels on the really slick handles and third I had to take off the pocket clip and bend it so it won't slip out of my pocket. Other than that I love it
Hello. I have a couple of old Gerbers somewhere but i admit i lost all confidence when they partenered with Bear Grylls and produced a whole line of very low quality stuff. I was gifted a few by well meaning friends who know i like outdoor stuff. The only one i still have in one piece is the mini camp axe which i admit is usefull and probably the best of a poor series. That said I have no experience with their recent stuff. All the best. (Went back and found the comment. He is definatly not a happy camper, lol.)

I have a new Gerber Sharkbelly. Not the best at thumb opening with the slot but otherwise it's great. 3.25" blade at 2.1 oz, 420HC, made in Oregon. Their wire clip is fantastic and it's very light, perfect for shorts. Have a great day JB!

I feel the need to make a general comment here. When I am watching or reading a review by a knowledgeable person, the number one thing I am looking for is honesty. I understand it is easier to be positive than negative, especially if the knife was provided by the manufacturer. I believe this is why many reviewers only show knives they can recommend. But there is a difference between being critical and trashing. No one should ever feel the need to apologize for honesty.
Got red and black one, had it about a month. Put a wicked edge on it and I like it a lot. The blade shape reminds me of spyderco matrix. I think the blade geometry make it very slicy Now I am buying the blue one. A score of 8 is very fair. Nice video.
One of my favorite multitool pliers ever, and my first, was the gerber that slid out the front before that ever existed before in those type of tools. I've got some of their other tools, I love their tools, but they always seem to find a way to fail me on their knife only blades. As I said before, Gerber Knives is the division that came out when the Gerber Baby grew up and moved into adulthood. But now and then they show some great promise... I hate clam packs...only because I like to keep the boxes my knives (and just about anything else I collect) come in. It is why I hate a lot of the Swiss Army Knives i buy from SMKW. But it doesn't stop me from buying em.
I think you said it exactly. They were better because the market wasn’t as saturated. It’s really hard to keep up with the amount of manufactures available to us now. And the competition is steeeep in the budget arena. My personal gripe with this knife is the 7cr and it’s not even with the actual quality of the steel itself. I feel like its just silly of them almost ignore the overwhelming chant from the masses...”8cr needs to retire”...so they step down and use 7cr?? Doesn’t make sense. At least stick with 8cr for $35. And I totally agree 9cr18 at a $45-ish price GREAT! Honestly I feel like Gerber is mainly focusing on their multitool line and seems to view the knife line as a secondary. Side note:I love several of the upcoming multitool designs!! Thanks for taking the time to address everything JB!
I like the idea of it. I'll say that. Its still a useful tool no doubt. But as knife guys we have a lot of expectations that need to be met. I say it daily almost, there's just too much competition. Great discussion.🍻
I have a Gerber Paraframe I use as a beater, it’s fine for what it is, but not really part of the collection. I have 3 CRKT knives and they’re all OK, really like them, Liong Mah #5, CEO & Pilar, all well under £40, but I’m struggling to justify buying the new Symmetry which is over £50 for CRKT’s pretty standard 8CR13MoV. 🤔
It is difficult to deal intellectually with a very emotional person. You are such a peace keeper. Are you a middle child? I agree with your points. I wish Gerber and CRKT would upgrade their great designs with quality and keep up with the industry. The last great knife I had from Gerber was before pocket clips (1980s). It was the LST. They still make it @ around $19.
Man, what a roller coaster that comment thread was. Anyone who has ever watched your channel knows you don't brand bash, and we all appreciate honest feedback and honestly most of the things Gerber has come out with are not worth buying because the competitive market has come so far. I think you're very fair on that point. I remember growing up I had a champagne colored Gerber that was decent for a $30 walmart knife, as well as a paraframe, but that was back when they were one of the only games in town. That doesn't cut it anymore. Most recently I picked up a Mini Covert Auto on a whim, roughly a $140 knife. It has s30v and is small and pokey. I really like the design and I really want to love the knife but the fit and finish is so abysmal it's turned into a waste of money. The pocket clip is off centered and so tight I can't get it in pocket, horrible milling marks on the spine of the blade, decent blade play, the blade deploys too far so when open it looks slightly bent backwards, and if you at all squeeze the frame while pushing the button it doesn't fully deploy. I'm not afraid to say that until they step up their game I'm going to stay far away from them. There's just too much better out there for the same price. My BM Mini Reflex II is the same price point and a million times the knife. I'm glad to see them coming out with new and cool designs but I won't be buying them for a while. If you ever want to check out one of their "higher end" knives I would be happy to send it your way for you play with for a bit.

I'm still waiting for Gerber to turn the corner I honestly thought they would be further along by now, especially after seeing how SOG restored and reinvented itself. However 7cr isn't going to help that at all at that price. But Gerber hasn't been an "American" company since Fiskers fully absorbed them and just destroyed their reputation. I also noticed that despite hearing that they are moving their production back from China that Buck has a whole new line of 7cr models from there. I feel for these American companies that are trying to complete with the Civivi's and CJRB's but on the other hand they have access to the same low cost production companies offshore like SRM that can and do produce high quality OEM knives for a variety of brands. Clearly they have chosen to set their production standards lower and are relying on volume sales.. Oh and reading that "passionate" response made my brain hurt from the lack of competency in the English language.
Yeah...I think you are pretty on point John! 7CR isnt going to raise their stock at all in the knife world! I think an upgrade to even 9CR or even D2 would get them a decent amount of "positive press". At least it would show they are making an attempt! Thanks so much my friend!!
Honestly I agree. I don't have an issue with Chinese or foreign manufacturing it's just the way a global marketplace works. But if they're using it then they have to compete with the people who are manufacturing stuff there and I agree Kershaw, CRKT, Boker, Gerber all these companies that are using Chinese manufacturing are coming with sub par materials for the prices they're charging and to me that's a hard pass. If I can choose one of those or a Civivi or a Ganzo or Tangram in terms of quality and materials for price Civivi and Ganzo blow the US companies out of the water. Doesn't mean I won't buy some of the knives because I like the design but it certainly isn't helping them compete. Personally I don't even mind a few little fit and finish flaws depending on the price of the knife just make sure it locks up properly and doesn't rattle and opens and closes properly 100% of the time. The rest ... I mean it's nice if everything is perfect but it's not a deal breaker. For that matter I'm more than happy to take a knife in a clamshell or a bag in some packing peanuts or wrapped in bubble wrap like whatever as long as the knife gets to me without damage I was just going to throw away all the extras anyways since I'm not into reselling or anything like that.
Thanks so much for your response Ashkan! As you said, I can live with a small gap on a $12 Rough Ryder....the value I've got out of my $ has been achieved! Thanks again!!
Gerber custom shop 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I almost spit my drink out when you said that. The Gator is the only Gerber I've had that actually stood up to some work, and of course it was one that was issued to me. The Sumo just looks great and it's man sized, so I think it'll be a hit. I don't know if Gerber will ever get out of the "newbie" market, and that's not bad. There is definitely a need for that, so lean into it if that's what they're going for.
Gave them a chance on the flatiron in D2... Blade not very sharp, Frame very sharp though. Blade rubs on liner cause lock has so much tension it presses the blade completely over and is about impossible to unlock. U need an lever to unlock to world's most sticky steelframelock.
Took off Fingerplate, bended lock knocked down burr.. Is usable now after 90 minutes of fixing.. Still needs proper grind and is off-center... And nobody told me it is heavy as godzilla...the micarta is nice though. 😄
I would love to see Gerber and any other American knife company succeed. I would love to see them be the innovators and manufacturing experts as a country we were known for. I want them to be the leaders in all price points. When I got back into folders I would see Gerber and SOG in the Clam packs at Wally World, Cabella"s and think ewwww. To me clam packs say we don't care enough about our knives to package them well. If this is your first knife or last one got lost or tossed good luck getting to this one. TwoSun wasn't a 100+ company. In the beginning they were 20 to 50 with the occasional 80 dollar knife. The boxes are not great but they are boxes. To me packaging doesn't make much of a difference unless it is a clam pack. That just says inexpensive toy to me. From what I understand the red liners only come with the darkened blade. I admit it is a good looking knife. Somewhat reminds me of the Super Freek though. The black and grey G10 with an axis lock. The red standoff barrel spacers. The blade shape and the opening hole as well as the lanyard slot are totally different. I don't see why they need that large an area for a lanyard. Probably since I don't use lanyards it seems excessive to me. Thanks for sharing your opinion on the knife and topic in general.
My thoughts exactly Rick! I want companies like Gerber to be the innovators not the procrastinators!!! I believe you are correct about the liners! I see what you are saying in the comparison to the Freek! I dont use lanyards either so a large area does seem a little odd to me as well! Thank you very much as always my friend!!
I think Gerber is trying to keep a float in a crowded marina. The price range of this knife is really hard to compete in there are literally hundreds of options with steels and materials running in all directions. I think Gerber much like sog has developed a poor quality reputation and are trying to build back to the level they once were. It's hard in today's knife world to do what they have to do. Hopefully they can. Great video brother 👍
If Gerber would put an upgraded steal in the knife and present it in a nice box, I think it would give us more the feeling of the quality that this knife does already have. Can an American company compete with all the cheap foreign knife brands? Yes they can! If you have a good qualitycontrol, don't put the pricerange up to far, do a little effort on presentation and stand for their product, in my opinion they absolutely can. Over here in Europe we still look at American made products as high quality standard products. But a little work and attention would refirm that vision, not only over here but i believe in the USA as well. So let's encourage the American companies so not only all Amercans but the rest off the world too can be proud to own/buy American products! Sorry for my rant but i just had to say this.
I'm with you bud. Slap some 9cr on it and I'd be all over it. And maybe a little soy on tbe pivot. Yeah definitely soy. 😁 Great video brother! I love when you do a longer one!!
Unfortunately, Gerber used to be a much more respected name. They let their image go in a certain direction and it's not easy to bring back around. Slapping Bear Grylls name on everything they sold for a while may not have been the best marketing decision long-term, as much as I do personally find him to be very entertaining. It's going to take someone with fresh ideas in their marketing department , combined with the willingness 2 put out a really good product for them to bring the reputation back to a different level. I have had some really great things from them over the years, they are certainly capable but it depends on how much their upper management really cares. Maybe instead of Bear Grylls they should spend the money and partner up with Chuck Norris instead 😆
LOL....yeah, all good though! My "harsh" words dont come from a general dislike. They come from disappointment and a want for them to be more competitive!!
I totally agree U.S. needs to pump up their game on budget folders. I think in general people are looking for wear/rust resistance, edge retention and light weight in EDC. Which at 440 and at 5 oz I’ll have to stick with Civivis even though I would love to support U.S. made products. The Gerber Sumo sucks in my opinion. It doesn’t even have a flipper. Lol. Get with the times Gerber with your 1995 440 stainless steel. You really want to score it a 3 Bigred! Don’t lie! Lol. Overall a great overview of this piece of shit.

They go where the money is an it works.
👊💀
Yeah....that's probably a true enough statement
Gerber custom shop 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I almost spit my drink out when you said that. The Gator is the only Gerber I've had that actually stood up to some work, and of course it was one that was issued to me. The Sumo just looks great and it's man sized, so I think it'll be a hit. I don't know if Gerber will ever get out of the "newbie" market, and that's not bad. There is definitely a need for that, so lean into it if that's what they're going for.
For sure brother! If thats the market they are going to appeal to...then we as consumers have to be good with it and act accordingly!!
Gave them a chance on the flatiron in D2... Blade not very sharp, Frame very sharp though. Blade rubs on liner cause lock has so much tension it presses the blade completely over and is about impossible to unlock. U need an lever to unlock to world's most sticky steelframelock.
Oh man...sorry to hear that but those are the stories I hear in regards to Gerber!!
Took off Fingerplate, bended lock knocked down burr.. Is usable now after 90 minutes of fixing.. Still needs proper grind and is off-center... And nobody told me it is heavy as godzilla...the micarta is nice though. 😄
Had a Gerber LST for 31 years, so.....
Never had the LST but you are the second one to mention having one for a long time!! Thanks Jack!
That is a good way of putting it Jeremy!!
Very well said my friend! Thanks for watching!!
I'm with you bud. Slap some 9cr on it and I'd be all over it. And maybe a little soy on tbe pivot. Yeah definitely soy. 😁
Great video brother! I love when you do a longer one!!
LOL....sauce or milk!?!??!?!? I do like doing these videos as well! Just need that spark of inspiration!!
@@BigRedEDC I don't do fake milk but I love Chinese food so definitely sauce!!😁
@@GratefulPanick LOL!!!
LOL....I'd buy a Chuck Norris knife!!! Thanks so much brother!
I stay away from a Knife Company that. Has the same name as a baby food. They have a few I like, The Gator and Shark.
LOL...I really liked the Gator as well! Thanks for watching!!
Did you remember me saying it was my most controversial review. I reviewed it maybe 5 or 6 months ago. Didn’t like it, and bam. 😂
LOL....yeah, all good though! My "harsh" words dont come from a general dislike. They come from disappointment and a want for them to be more competitive!!
Use a tiny bit of Break Free on it.
Right on Mike!!!
Step up the steel Gerber!!
Absolutely Matt!!!
No...I really dont want to score it a 3. I think its pretty close to being a pretty darn good knife! Thanks for watching Jason!
@@BigRedEDC I’m just messing with with. 🤣Keep the great vids coming! 👍
@@jasongunns2757 all good man! I totally get if that's how you feel! I really do think the Sumo is close!
@@BigRedEDC everyone has their own views and applications on what a folder should be like for their own personal use. I respect your opinion sir.
@@jasongunns2757 and I yours brother! This is a perfect example of how a conversation should carry out!!
Got a utility blade from Gerber... Blade falls out at every 5. Cut.
Oh no...really!?!?!?!?
JB that knife comes with a box I think when they sell to department stores they put them in clam packs for convenience and less thievery. You’re so funny you hate CRKT but you let me buy one off of you for my son ha ha Ha ha ha you’re a PIP
JB I’m thinking of changing my name to jojojeep1 and things, because I have so many different things I talk about I don’t do serious content like you but I should have more than 122 subscribers after 10 years ha ha Ha ha ha
That is possible! Just becasue I dont like something doesnt mean someone else wont. I dont hate everything about CRKT! I just got the Pilar lll in and I am digging it a lot!
Good for you brother enjoy that knife. Anyway it’s been a long winter friend it’s been a long winter
@@jojojeep1 I think it's been a long year my friend!!! Hopefully things will turn around soon!
I know I was warned already know politics on your channel, but I wouldn’t count on any pleasant changes as long as the Democrats are running the country. Anyway Brother We are survivors
Your score is way to high. Looks good but the knife is poorly designed. IMHO
Fair enough brother!! Thanks so much for watching!!
