Nice set of boards Pete. Hope you do well in the tournament. Board 1 - I got to 4 spades made +1. The bidding was a little different in that I bid 2NT like I would have without the overcall this showed my points and allowed partner to use NFM to get to the spade fit. I believe your sequence showed a few more points and as such the robots tried for the slam. Board 2 - Same auction same play but I misguessed the diamonds to make 2 spades = book Board 3 - Same auction and like you I wanted to bid the 2 1/2 heart raise. :) I took the low road for 2 hearts +1 Board 4 - Same bidding and thought process. 3 hearts +2 I just can't see the raise when on a different board setup it could go -2 easily Board 5 - Same bidding problem that I had on weather to reverse or not 1NT opener was a possibility. I chose to upgrade and reverse because of the singleton Ace which is much more offensive. With a singleton King I probably would have opened 1NT anyways I got to 4 spadeswhich made on the same play as you. Board 6 - Same bidding with the overcall up until the 3 club cuebid raise by partner. At this point look at the hand with a spade fit in partners hand and it becomes very nice. I gave a 3 diamond cue bid as a nudge to partner and that was all it took for the robot to put me into 6 spades. The play as you see was laydown. Board 7 - Hmmm I bid 2 spades for a rebid and can see now that I underbid the hand. At the time I wasn't thinking about "walking the dog". We got to 4 spades Xed by west. Easy pickup of the Ace spades all the aces actually for a top on the board. Board 8 - Same bidding and defensive problems as ops played in 2 clubs. I should have thought about it more. The only way to get to dummy to actually use the J diamonds is with the K hearts assuming that west has some length in diamonds. If partner has 3 diamonds then we would be entitled to 3 tricks which is exactly what we will get if I overtake and ruff the 3rd diamond. Same if partner has 4 diamonds. if partner has 2 diamonds KQ then we are only taking 2 tricks anyways. Can declarer use the J diamonds for a spade discard? Only if he has Ax hearts and can get rid of the trump in my hand. If I overtake the Ace diamonds ruff the third diamond , and play on spades I have the tempo to take all our tricks that we should get. I would be playing for partner to have the Ace hearts or the King of spades which seems reasonable. The downside of not overtaking is what happened. Partner stopped playing diamonds (reasonable) and played Ace of hearts and a heart so declarer could dump a diamond loser. 2 clubs = instead of -2 like GIB projects with double dummy defense. Overall a 79.47% set of boards for me.
I started badly, but ended well, Board 1: same Board 2: same Board 3: I rebid 3H and ended in 4H-1, annoyingly the ace of diamonds is the only lead that beats it. Board 4: I got overly paranoid about ruffs that I overtook the king of hearts, I was afraid of East winning the spade and playing a second diamond so I ended up only making 9 tricks Board 5: I opened 1D and rebid 2S. That got us to 4S making. Board 6: same Board 7: same Board 8: I passed initially and balanced with 2S. This got raised, but I managed to bring 3S in.
