Royce Da 5'9" On His New Album, "Book of Ryan"

- So what’s an acclaimed artist to do when they no longer have anything to prove? In the case of hip-hop’s legendary Detroit lyricist Royce 5’9”, you shut out all of the hype that places you in the same esteemed company as such revered, game-changing emcees as Jay-Z, Ice Cube and Eminem and release your most potent, celebratory and brazenly honest album of your 20-plus-year-career. "Book of Ryan," the seventh solo studio project from the grinding rhyme visionary, is a work that defies well-worn, grizzled veteran rap clichés.

It's been a long time since I've watched an interview and thought "These are really good questions". The host did a really good job, which enabled Royce to provide more in depth answers. This is what an interview should be.
Tommie Boler exactly! And not a lot of eminem questions 👍👍
The only reason i enjoy listening to rap music lately you the best lyricist alive.
I was thinking the exact same thing actually!
Fantastic interview... I love it when they do their homework. Charlemagne didn’t even know Ryan was Royce’s real name and he’s interviewed him multiple times.
Appreciate it Steve - was very excited to get to sit down with Royce
Steve Mitchell the last royce interview on the breakfast club was basically copy & paste all the other interviews if not even worse
Excited for Royce's album, but this interviewer is on another level much respect
Thank you - really happy you enjoyed it!
One of the greatest to ever do it period. He's on level with some of the goats like Em and Jay but he doesn't get enough recognition
Really good interviewer who did all of his research and framed his questions really well. Props man! First time watching this show and I love it!
Appreciate the kind words! This album is gonna blow you away!
I've never seen the interviewer but he did a real good job. Royce is one of the best to do it!
Thank you Chris! Appreciate you checking out the episode

Their collabs are the best... no one that collabs with eminem (except dre) can compete with Royce cause their chemistry is amazing , I’ll take Royce over 50 to be honest
Great interview. Very well done. Royce is one of the greatest lyricist of our time. This interviewer is very good. He deserves to interview a Jay Z or Eminem.
Haha! If you know either - let 'em know!
The most underrated, under appreciated in rap history.
Jack Luchette I think people have a good sense on how dope he is. Especially after a joint project with Em.
That's AZ.
Royce is such a good interview. Him and em are my 1,2 in my T5DOA
Excellent questions, well articulated and great segways from question to question. I've watched pretty much all of Royce's roll out interview's and you absolutely nailed it. very impressive!
Appreciate that!! This album is special
I listen to all his interviews too! And not just cuz he's my favorite rapper alive currently, but he gives interesting perspectives on each question that gets asked to him, I like hearing him talk
Right! I'm glad he wasnt just asking Royce about Eminems favorite food and his shoe size. Great interview
This interviewer is really good. Good Job whoever you are
Incredible interview. You let Royce say what he had to say, and we were able to hear some amazing insight into how this genius works and thinks. Well done 👍
Thank you very much - great conversation!
This is the level of research/knowledge that all Build interviewers should have. This interviewer did a great job and his knowledge of Royce, specifically, and hip hop, generally, allowed him to ask curated - not generic - questions which in turn allowed Royce to open up and give us the real. Good job
It's about time that Royce gets this well-deserved respect. I've been a fan of Royce since "Boom" - this interviewer clearly did his research and seems like a genuine fan. Well done. One Love.
This is a great interview! Royce is one of the most talented and underrated rappers of all-time. You did a great job with the interview.
Thanks Henry! I agree with you on Royce
SucceSS is Certain x PRhyme x Layers - Lately He's developing Straight Upp ClaSS!cS
This was a great interview, questions were on point.
Appreciate it! Thank you for taking the time to watch
17:24"..then Crook is just a lyrical Maniac"
no truer words have been spoken
this was a really good Royce interview
Thanks Mike
Classic album! Most underrated album of this time! This is the best hip hop album in 15 to 20 years! True Hip Hop at its finest!
Great interview
Thank you very much - appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Kevan Kenney I appreciate passionate journalism where I feel like I'm not watching the same interview 10 other people just did, keep it up my dude
Excellent questions, great interview. Royce is one of the best
I wanted to listen to this album but after this interview I have to listen to this album, great job by the interviewer
thanks Barka - you can't miss this album!!
Royce is the man! Notice how all the greatest rappers are very intellectual? very inspirational to e as a artist myself.
The interviewer was AMAZING. He deserves more of these great artists to talk to
Royce is super cool! Love him!
This interview is dope as hell, these are some original questions. From the interviewers accent I feel like he grew up in New Zealand or Australia, haha maybe I'm wrong.
Grew up in New Jersey! lol you got the New right haha
Damn... Royce and I are very similar after listening to him describe himself.
Wonderful interview salute from Malaysia.
I want to see this guy interviewing em, it'd be really interesting.
Im like a lil kid that wants to fall asleep dec 23 and wake up and it be Christmas lol
lol
I know it's been 5 almost 6 years since then dropped. But this could've been 5 hours longer lol. Guess in gping on a royce interview binge
Royce is intensely deep
Crazy album bro
I need a 2nd Bad Meets Evil album.
Tell these white people to clap louder for royce
the album is INSANE. I love conscious real life music. Check my channel. did NOT expect for the album to be like this. This album was insane. First listen at work today, man i can relate on SO MANY LEVELS.... PS.. My name is also Ryan.
Ryan Matson fucking amazing music
Of course you thought the album was stellar.
Why do you say that?
The reason why your favourite rappers never grow is cause you compare them to the rappers of the south they are not mumble rappers allow the south to do what their good at and allow your rappers or emcee to grow I've had enough of this segregation hiphop is hiphop end of story
Royce doesnt understand business on the Slaughterhouse situation and is at fault. Joe Budden is trying to do proper business, but Royce is putting his personal feelings for Eminem in the way for whats best for Slaughterhouse.
Oil Man but also the albums still not the done. Regardless about the business aspect it's an unfinished album.
@Devan Richter .. you just heard 1 or 2 interviews by Royce. The album is outdated now yes, but Joe isnt doing the "finishing touches" because the business isnt right and has to stand up against the bullshit. He is the reason Slaughterhouse album isnt out but he is not at fault for the break up he is trying to give us a lot more Slaughterhouse an in fact it would be his only music focus if they leave Shady.
Oil Man So everything joe say's is the gospel truth even though he's the only one saying the business is bad 🤔🤔🤔 Keep in mind this is the first time this has ever been said about shady records 🤔🤔🤔
Mr. Smith this is not the first time..
Mr. Smith everybody knows shady is a trash label
I can't wait to hear this Great Album! I hope the Mumble Rappers Listen to it, then Realise their in the wrong music genre!
This was dope, Royce always comes with real answers, interviewer was good too.
"Royce Da 5'9 is here!!"
*shows 2 random chicks*
Royce is amazing forget about as a artist.. he’s a awesome guy just as a person. We all have our own struggles too. This interview was actually good and I like this guy!
First time meeting Royce yesterday right before we went live, couldn't agree more...
Great interview! I like how it wasn’t mostly eminem questions.. yes there were some but it was more questions on Royce as a man and artist👍
Thanks Dan - Definitely wanted to focus on Royce + the music
Kevan Kenney anytime man 👍
FACK really is horrible, but amazing at the same time.
I still have to check it out...lol
A Black Thought/Royce joint album?.......damn.....I'll need a new earpiece for each track.🔥🔥🔥💥🔥💥🔥
shout out to r/hiphopheads to submitting that one
Soo much respect for nickle 9👌🏼👌🏼
Shout out to kid vishis. Aka Montgomery boys
Book of Ryan will be a classic. Yup you heard it from me first. BTW that was a great interview 🔥 🔥
Royce is underrated & humble!
Royce can do dope interviews... he is truly a real person
Great interview & Interviewer! Respectful, well prepared, knew Royce’s background, great questions.
Royce's kicks tho
Royce Da GOAT and 5'9!
Royce has been nice since Boom!
Royce's jacket looks fly af. His hat is on point. And some sweat pants...
the shoes though!!
them shits leggings how tight they are
This was a great interview.
Comments were right, I was very impressed with the interviewer. Book of Ryan was a great album as well
Wow. " @Build Series " they spent 60,000 dollars on that TV screen that's vertical showing Royces' album cover. Dope interview, good interaction. 👍🏽
4:28 maaaan I'm here now i respect the fact you admitted that👊 very hard cycle to break.. very hard my G I'm happy you've broke that constant fuckin cycle it took me a long time to type this because i am indeed an alcoholic and it's hard to type when you're drunk. But thanks for the inspiration
Ems revival album is being judge by a certain group of people who hold no weight in hip hop. Numbers lie. Even em said revival wasn’t great. Everyone always has that one shitty album
Been listening to the album all day, it's great! Very good interview as well.
so good! Thanks for checking out the episode
YO I WOULD BITCH-SLAP MY BOSS FOR A ROYCE X BLACK THOUGHT ALBUM TO DROP.
LIKE I WOULDN'T EVEN GIVE IT A THOUGHT
I agree. Fack is the best worst song. It's the worse Em has ever made but you have to love it because it's funny af
yo this is really good interview. keep it up. um going to give my sub
Great interview
Royce a legend too
When does this album release?
4th of may. But the Caterpillar ft Eminem music video is coming today. 3pm EST

This album is unbelievable!! Especially Growing up in Detroit it truly resonates and A major way!
Wow, i didn't expect Royce to be so intelligent, clearly speaking and frontal. :o 👌
Royce is very talented but he is one of the most uninteresting artists to listen to when he speaks.
damn, feel the opposite
