How An Astrophysicist Cuts an Onion
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 чер 2024
- Geometrically, why are onions better than potatoes? Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice break down Cartesian coordinates, spherical geometry, and why onions make you cry.
Learn about coordinates on a square, a sphere, and a cylinder. We talk about the geometry of potato chips versus french fries. Plus, why does Neil feel moved to cut an onion in the office?

Keep Looking Up! (and away from the onions 😭) 😂
This is ironically like an Onion video. Are we going to learn how towels work next?
Onions are spirals not circles, how does the golden ratio apply to this, not equal cubes? and leftovers?
Awesome and interesting...but now I have a craving for fried potatoes and caramelized onions...Mmmmmm
I prefer t look down, cry, and keep my fingers unharmed.
They have to name a galaxy after Allium.
SIR, you are cutting an onion with a bread knife. The chefs of the world need a word with you.....
Came here for this comment 🙌🏽 I just kept staring at the bread knife. Had to rewind the video to actually hear what he said 😂
I'll have to seconds that observation!
lol
Nobody ever said he was a genius
😂❤
Neil invites you over for dinner. He starts to cut the vegetables. He proceeds to explain geometry. It is now 11pm. You starve to death.
At least he doesn't dull the blade on your chef's knife.
@SubxZeroGamer no I let him keep talking and slowly take over cooking for him and just raid his fridge and make it pretty decent meal out of whatever he's got, happily listening the whole time.
Why would you starve to death if your dinner was delayed by a few hours?
Why wouldn't you let yourself die when there is clearly food in front of you?
Why will you feel the need to explain to me that is was just a joke?
I think that's the only moment I wouldn't complain about being hungry.
Best dinner I’ll ever have 😋! Thank you Chef Neil!
this video brought tears to my eyes...
Lol👍🏽👍🏽❤️
😂 Science is a beautiful thing!
because of the onions?
🥁
Because of the "bread knife"?
Only a scientist could cut an onion with a bread knife and look smart doing it.
That's true, is just a shame they couldn't find a scientist to do the cutting, Kneel In The Grass is a poor substitute though.
@@itsamemario8014What a dumb comment
Scientists are after the final results, no matter the available tools 😂😂😂
@@charlessukati4866 Neil doesn't look smart nor is he a scientist.
The last research paper with name on it is from 2008.
@@itsamemario8014lol
I love the fact that these two brilliant people can upload a video with this title and we’d watch it 😂 thank you guys, you’re brilliant (:
😂
The most important thing in America happened last week, did you see it? The presidential dementia debate. Who is running our "democracy" and why has the "republic" failed to stop and/or remove someone who's reportedly had dementia for years in the white house?
We need a science with Neil and Chuck cooking series!🙏🏾🙏🏾
Heck yes! From your keyboard to God‘s ears.
That would be awesome. Imagine him explaining to Martha Stewart the physics involved with prepping the ingredients.
Tonight on Cooking with Science, Spreading butter with a spoon! staring Neil deGrass Tyson as your host ...along with Chuck Nice and tonight's special guest... Nile Red..
You're basically talking about a reboot of Good Eats.

This team makes science so beautiful and lovely😭😭😭
They are super incredible humans ❤🎉❤️
I needed this for science classes lol
Not to mention tasty.

Classical French trained chef here, also part time non phd astro physicist. You are cutting the onion incorrectly. First use a smooth edge, not serrated. second, use the length of the blade, don't press down; squeeze. That way you don't cry by smooshing the cells.
Don't press down or squeeze. Slice. Shef of 25 years.
And Shef is a female chef, so save any corrections fellas.
Classical train French chef, about to start grad school for economics,
Can you imagine meeting the new commis chef for the first time, see them pull this stunt, then give a lecture on geometry about why they’re cutting onions so ineffectively
Lol
When I was young you had actors and actresses so you could discern male and female performers but now we don't use the word actress we only have actors - regardless if they're male or female. Also when I was young, we only had chefs - didn't matter if you were male or female. Now, apparently, we have shefs, so we can discern male chefs from female chefs .... isn't that a contradiction in the two cases?

I found this video very appeeling.
We c what u did there!
Bravo.
I thought it was a little choppy.
@@jesse6344 A real tear-jerker.
Yes. It ran Rings around the other episodes.
If I started teaching a junior high science class, I would start every class with these short mini-segments before jumping into teaching my class for the day. Well done, Dr. Tyson and Mr. Nice.

I remember on testing dropping objects to test if they fall together or separate..you said dont judge me for having an onion in my office 😂🤣😂 now we know why ..Startalk forever ♾️❤

Hi Neil and chuck!! Thank you so much for your videos and educational!! You guys make star talk really awesome!!❤❤❤👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👊🏿
I can’t believe I enjoyed this. You all are making me nerdier every day.
When a single astrophysicist does a better job at explaining coordinates than the entire education system 🤦♂️
One of my favorite examples of coordinates is Star Gate. I know it would fit better in an episode of Film vs. Fact. To find a position in a 3 dimensional reality, you have to have six points, adding a seventh, the point of origin. It's always been incredibly fascinating to me.
@StarTalk I could not have explained it better! Thanks Neil and Chuck!
I love StarTalk. You guys really are awesome. Thanks for making upbeat, educational videos.
That's how my head chef explains to me while I'm crying chopping onions
Science + food = good food.
"With a dose of Math." 😂 I just love these guys!
Wow, I don't understand how I've only seen... mostly only seen, to the best of my memory, short vids of yours when this channel has been around for literally years. Looking forward to checking some of your previous videos.
0:50 Neither did I. Learned something new today.
Thank you for these videos. In my late 50s and I really enjoy them.
I liked that explainer. And the fact that Neil pointed the knife at the camera and to Chuck by saying its catchphrase. Keep Lookin Up, i will Neil hahahhaa!
Chef Gordon Ramsay is somewhere in a closet room yelling profanify at the walls, because he'd just witnessed the manhandling of an onion with a butter-knife. 😂
Neil deGrasse Tyson: "Why I love Onions"
Shrek: "Nods in approval"
every day at lunch, i watch StarTalk and my day is way better instantly. You guys are awesome !
This was a very layered explainer it brought a tear to my eye....
I'll let myself out.
😂
Neil Degrasse Tyson explaining his love for onions sounds like an animation idea that Umami would come up with.
That was an amazing explanation thank you very much for that.
mankind is so lucky to have this recorded. what an achivement!
And I'm sure you spend a lot of time watching useless videos so why complain now when the content has at least a shred of thoughtful information that could be useful.
What else?
Did I stumble into OnionTalk by mistake?
Neil is awesome you gotta love him
so insightful! thanks once again!
You never fail to teach things in a way that is palatable for us common folks! Lol thank you sir!!
Yup Neil is a cyborg . No human cuts onions that way 😂😂😂😂
we can neither confirm or deny 🤐
@@StarTalk 😂😂😂😂🤣🫡
Thank you Dr. Tyson, you provide the break/peace people need from the rest of the World.
You are the best! Please keep doing what you’re doing. Blessings to you and your family ❤.
I just LOVE these explainers!!
Kenji deserves to take a world-wide bow, by showing us how to evenly dice an onion better than a PhD astrophysicist could.
Soooooooo 0:07
To avoid the ear inducing action of cutting the onion, you can put it in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. This way the fluid that causes the tears will freeze and you won't cry.
The most accessible science lesson, ever! They make every topic so relatable! ,😍
I love you Neil ! Please come back to Texas!!
Niel is a national treasure!
Fantastic video. Entertaining as well as informative.
Awesome video guys!
Neil and Chuck, y'all rock! Peace
❤❤❤
Cool! I learned so much and will apply this information. Thank you so much!

@6:14 That cut was deep, Howard is evaluating your thesis.
He will publish in 'The Daily Mail'' 1st of April next year.
you guys are always killing it with these science platonic dialogues with humor
I don’t understand 100% of what Neil talks about on this podcast but I 100% love to listen to him discuss these ideas
You guys are the ultimate harmonic dynamic duo.
The mathematical study of change that’s calculus on its most simple understanding but if you break it down to that simple understanding it becomes so much easier to do.
Oooh! Nice intro graphics! Thanks Guys!
Good one! Reminds me of those old Mr. Wizard programs (they're still out there on UA-cam!).
I have been a chef my entire life, it's cool to think of it like this and this means I am a scientist because I have cut who knows how many onions. You always amaze me guys!
I never thought I'd be sitting here watching Neil deGrasse Tyson cut an onion with a bread knife, but I'm here for it and I love it
Thanks!
Neil is just fantastic!!!
Love these guys!
This is amazing. This is why I watch StarTalk 😂
You are real stars and keep on shining 🌟
The BEST class yet! 😳
Thank you sir!
I enjoy y'all (and sometimes I learn stuff).
This was very wholesome. I really sat here in bed to watch an astrophysicist be appalled by an onion 😂😂😂
Tere is always something delicious cooking in my personal astrophysicst mind
And Iam always craving for it😊
Great Content
The bread lives to another day. However as always, I learn something new. Great vid
This was awesome 😊
Somehow (and I'm NOT exactly certain how yet🤔) you made this MORE interesting than "1x1=😐". I'm curious on your opinion of Bananas and their Tri-sectionalization.
I'm looking forward to the star fruit episode or would that be too on-the-nose?
Launch incoming Astro chef full course😂🎉keep Looking up🌌
Loved this ❤
Love your short vids that I've seen and am delighted to now subscribe to this channel (new to me). Having said that, two words? Cooking classes. We'd like you to keep all of your digits, after all! 😁
good 1 as usual
Of all of your videos, the one about cutting onions made me subscribe.
Learning something interesting every day ;)
Lol the onion magically appears after the “HOWEVER” 😂
Hello Neil, love literally everything that you do! You are a credit to humanity! Just one question, why is our Moon the only moon which does not have a name, other than, The Moon….?
For a second, I thought Neil was going to show us a new way to cut an onion without our eyes getting watery lol
You can reduce eye irritation from the gas coming from the onion by cutting the onion with your tongue out (the gas lands on of your saliva and not the moisture in your eye).
Also, washing your hands with a bit of sugar gets rid of the onion smell from your hands.
If you breath through your mouth and block the airway of your nose, a swimming nose clip or something else that blocks then you will not get teary. I was mind-blown when I tried it after I was told by a friend who is a chef, it worked!
Makes my hands stink for days even when I coat them with lemon or lime juice
Ol' Neil never disappoints in expanding the mind with interesting content
Please link the recipie so we can do this at home. Family would love this for dinner!
Vector flow analysis using a triple integral in spherical coordinates. Was on my mid-term Calc 3. 😢😢😢
Thank you, Neil. We all love you from the Philippines and around the globe, beautiful and effective teaching and no matter how you cut it. It’s still an onion.
just a safety tip for neil's great example with the onion in case you want to show someone in the future, make sure you cut it on a more stable surface than your own legs! 🤣
I have thought more than once what our society would have been like when they invented TV, radio, and had folks like you teaching others over the air waves instead of trying to make money. the advertising Nonsense in what not. How far along we would be now. Thanks guys I enjoyed getting another video.
In the culinary world this pre-cut allium makes for sometimes annoying yields of inconsistent Brunoise, that is aside from the tears
Love you Neil, when you come to the UK please post a video, I want to take your autograph and a picture with you, much love Sir❤
An astrophysicist and a comedian sit in a room cutting onions to explain math. Now ive seen everything
Love this Channel ❤️💞🎉❓👍
This was fun and interesting. My main thought when cutting an onion is to try not to cry but it still gets me most of the time 😭
Now THIS!?
I WILL WATCH!!
I take it back. There was no point to this video.
Chuck and Neil are an amazing combo
Watching this instead of the debate and not regretting it
I'm asking here because it's the most recent post of yours. Pangea: Could the Pyramids have been built before the split?
I would love to hear your theories on this.
"Chuck, come to office we have work"
"What work?"
"I want to cut onions"
Neil puts his hands through my ears and squeezes my brain. He lets go just before he hurts me.
I always end up talking about stuff like this and everyone around me is wondering when dinner will be done.... 😂
