An Instagram friend of mine was part of a kidney donation chain a few years ago. She donated one of hers to a man who needed it, and in turn her mother got the one she needed. Luckily it all went smoothly, and when it was all done and everyone was recovered, they all got to meet 😊
Yeah I agree with the chief doctor. She knew that the chain will break for any reason. The female doctor let her "I need to be the best doctor" complex get to her. Granted I've never seen the show, yet this gives me a reason to dislike the character. I hope the character has like some sort of redemption arc.
That was absolutely coercion, bringing the dying child in to make the woman feel awful for not donating?? That doctor was out of line. Sad part is there are physicians that actually act that way in real life.
I had an aunt who had kidney failure because she never took care of herself and no one could tell her anything. She was on the kidney list, and by miracle, she made it to the top. Do you know what she did when she got the kidney? She resumed her old habits of eating junk food and chain smoking until she died two years after she got the kidney. There were people like that little boy who needed and deserved the kidney far more than she did. I don't know how she even made it on the list. I hate having to say that about my own relative, may she rest in peace, but that's the way it is. Some people do not deserve second chances when the chances available are limited.
my aunt is exactly the same way to the point where neither of her sisters will donate a kidney to her even if they did match because she drinks constantly despite being in kidney failure for years now. they finally shut down recently and she’s on dialysis but i doubt she will ever qualify for a transplant given her drinking habits and her history of drug use. i feel bad for my cousin for having to deal with it but i do not feel sorry for my aunt at all. it was entirely her fault not genetic in the slightest.
For every one like that, there are dozens who are not. My father got a kidney when he was only 32. April 1979. He was still told that he wouldn't live to see 40 years old, see his kids graduate from high school, walk his 3 daughters down the aisle at their weddings, hold his grandchildren. And IF he lived long enough, he would need another transplant in 5 years. He did not drink or smoke before or after his transplant. The doctors were wrong, very wrong. That transplant lasted 34 years until he passed away at only 66 years old. Still too young but much later than the doctors thought it would be. He got to be at the graduations, the weddings, and was at the hospital when 4 of his 8 grandchildren were born. I will forever be grateful to the donor and their family. The only thing we were ever told was that the donor was in a motorcycle accident.
I am sorry, but this wasn't unethical. This was downright inhumane. What happens if she is in an accident or gets an illness that damages her only kidney left? What happens if she gets married to someone or has children in need of a kidney? These are risks every donor accepts because, for them, the reason for their donation is as important, if not more, than their future health and life. No one, NO ONE, no matter the circumstances, should be forced (yes, the doctor manipulated her and forced her to donate, or else she will feel like a child murderer) to donate their organs.
Agreed. I think the only redeeming fact is (i believe, could be wrong) that if you donated an organ in the past to a stranger as the doctor called it an "altruistic donor" you get put at the top of the donation list if you ever need an organ transplant. So if she were to need a kidney or any other organ she may be okay. But if she had kids or anyone who needed one that's still a problem of having one less kidney
@@Kay-mc1uj I didn't know that about altruistic donor. Thanks for letting me know. I do I think that this will just work for situations were she is relatively healthy, let's say a car accident. Priority is given to healthier and younger patients. Maybe they need to find a better way to manage the chain, but part of her job is respecting the wishes of the patient and her boss.
If she doesn’t agree to donate then the next person could be the “altruistic donor” and the chain would only decrease by one and so on and so forth. It doesn’t make any sense to coerce this donor with the idea that everyone dies if she doesn’t do it
The dad probably wouldn’t have donated if his son didn’t get one as a chain is the only way to guarantee a kidney for his kid. This might have caused others to back out because the person who was supposed to get the father’s wouldn’t so their relative would also probably back out so the continued domino effect is why the whole chain would break.
I think I finally figured out why I have major problems with shows like this Chicago md, greys anatomy. The idea is that they give a kidney so that their loved one receives one in return. Everyone donating is a match for someone else so they all must agree to it. transplant patients' lives are not saved, just extended. it is cruel, but it is the reality. Also, the donations must be anonymous as there is a federal law in the US regarding organ donations. . This was not just a HIPAA violation, but also a federal criminal charge.
She should have asked the pregnant woman to abort that fetus before intimidating the woman's daughter to donate her kidney. That would have kept the chain alive.
You do realize the woman can easily say no right? Assuming they had already asked and she refused. If she really wants the baby, then they can't force her to have an abortion. Especially if this hospital is in a state that doesn't even allow abortions in the first place.
@@tmm6884I think you need to use some critical thinking skills. Since the woman dropped out due to pregnancy, that means one of two things. Either they had already asked her and she refused and they can't force her to have an abortion. Or that they can't even offer it anyway because they are in a state that doesn't allow abortions. If I remember correctly, the woman in question is from Haiti. And abortion is definitely illegal there. If there government found out she had an abortion, even though it was outside the country, she can still be arrested. It's not that hard to figure out.

i think she did the right thing she saved the little boys life
Who cares abt the kid its her decision
If she were the kids parent and not a doctor you’d be right
No, she didn't do the "right" thing... she manipulated someone to gave her kidney, and possibly to lose chance of her life, her career. Lauren had a big heart, and doctor-lady used this as advantage.
There is a reason this chain was supposed to be anonymous.
transplant patients' lives are not saved, just extended. it is cruel, but it is the reality.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl And, your point is?... Furthermore, do you realize what the word ASK means?
@@tmm6884I think you need to use some critical thinking skills. Since the woman dropped out due to pregnancy, that means one of two things. Either they had already asked her and she refused and they can't force her to have an abortion. Or that they can't even offer it anyway because they are in a state that doesn't allow abortions. If I remember correctly, the woman in question is from Haiti. And abortion is definitely illegal there. If there government found out she had an abortion, even though it was outside the country, she can still be arrested.
It's not that hard to figure out.
