Solar power for homes is increasing in popularity and decreasing in price. Many homeowners are discovering the advantages of Solar Power and you may have even seen quite a few solar panel systems being installed in your own neighborhood.
    You're probably wondering:
How much do solar panels cost?
How much money will I save on my electricity bill?
    How solar panels work?
    Are solar panels worth it?
This video is a general overview of solar energy for beginners so you can make the best possible decisions regarding solar power for your home.
A solar panel (or photovoltaic panel) is a panel made of solar cells. Solar cells are the essential component by which light is converted into electrical energy and they are usually made of crystalline silicon. Each solar panel usually contains from 32 up to 96 solar cells.
Depending on the way solar cells are made, solar panels are categorized as polycrystalline, mono-crystalline, or thin film. The first two categories, which are the most common types of solar panels, are made of crystalline solar cells. The third category (thin film) is made of amorphous silicon.
Frameless solar panels have been on the market for more than a decade. Also, solar shingles and solar tiles popularized by the tesla solar roof are two types of products that are becoming more popular among residential applications.
    How do solar panels work?
Solar cells produce electricity by converting the tremendous solar energy that the earth receives every day in the form of sunlight and more specifically in the form of photons. Most typical commercial solar solutions convert sunlight to electrical energy at an average efficiency of 3 - 17%
In order to have a complete system that will produce electricity for your home, you need the following components:
    a) solar panels
    b) solar panel mounting structures
    c) an inverter
    d) an electrical panel with the necessary switches and circuit breakers
    e) DC and AC electrical cables
    f) Power meter.
Generally, residential solar systems are separated into 2 main categories: off-grid and on-grid.
In the case of an off-grid system, the electricity generated by the solar system will be used to cover 100% of the electrical usage of a home since the house is not connected to the electrical grid at all.
In a on-grid system, the house where the solar panels are installed is connected to the main power grid. Electricity generated by the solar panels can either cover the electrical needs of the house or when you produce more electricity than needed, it is sent to the power grid.
With net metering, your monthly electricity bill is calculated both ways, based on the net of your overall energy consumption and the monthly output from your solar panels. If you are producing more energy than you’re using the utility company will actually pay you!
How much will I save on my electricity bills if I install solar panels?
How much you actually save depends on a number of factors.
Where you live matters a lot. Sunnier is better. For example. A 5Kw installation consisting of 20 solar panels can produce approximately 8,000 kilowatt-hours every year if your house is in a hot and sunny state like California, but the same system will only produce approximately 6,000 kWh every year if your house is in a less sunny state like Connecticut.
The available surface on your roof, the unshaded part with the appropriate orientation, determines how many solar panels you can install and consequently your savings.
How much does a solar panel system cost?
You need to know how many solar panels you need. In 2019 the average cost of a residential solar panel is $2.99 per watt, so with an average solar panel system size of 5 kilowatts, you are looking at an average cost of $14,950 before any tax credits or incentives. Equipment makes up the majority of the cost but permits and labor for solar installation are also factored in.
Benefits and negatives of solar power for your house:
    Pros:
    -A true renewable energy source
-Reduce your electricity bill and provides insurance against rising power prices
    -Low maintenance cost
    -Financial incentives from the government
-They operate quietly, with no moving parts and emit zero pollution.
-They have a long service life and reliability in operation. The guarantees given by the manufacturers for the solar panels are generally for more than 25 years of good operation.
    Cons:
-Initial costs, but marginal cost drops to zero once the price of installation is paid off.
-Weather Dependent so it is an intermittent energy source, and can not be relied on in critical applications.
-Energy storage systems to smooth demand and load like the Tesla power wall are expensive.

I just bought into the power home solar system. I wanted a battery
backup instead of a generator. Installation was fast and good. The
installers were great. The concierge never contacted me till I sent
emails to them. When I tried to contacted them I was put on hold and most
of the time I hung up after 25 to 30 min. That is not near as bad as
the next thing. I am new to solar but I was told I would get a 26 percent
$14,000.00 (something) dollar energy tax credit to pay down my $50000.00 my system
and lower my monthly payments. Well that's not true in Indiana if your retired.
Your social security is not taxable. You need to have earned more than the energy
tax credit to get that amount returned my tax man told me. Which I didn't. I contacted my sales man.
He acted kinda surprised. The system works like it is advertised
It's my fault for not doing my home work. So If you live in Indiana and your retired with no
taxable income don't fall for this. Unless you are young and have a
    large income.

You're not only on an island but close to the equator which means you get abundant sun constantly year round.
Banana trees are essentially a bunch of solar panels and they have to generate enough energy to not only produce a plant but to produce big fruit or within a year

The solar panels should face the equator NOT south (08:14). You are right though since u are American and think the world starts from your east coast and ends on your western seaboard.
Also, inclination of the panels should roughly be the latitude degree on the map within which the panel sites will be located. ie 35° or higher for the Americans, check your exact neighbourhood...

You can use the direct current if you build your own power supplies for each device in your home. Every thing in your home has a power converter that changes the power from 120v ac current down to 3v-24v DC current. So why would you waist energy converting the already DC energy from the sun to ac current back to DC current to turn on your TV. It takes a large circuit board filled with 28 different types of chips resistors and caps just to change the ac120v power to 3 5 12 and 24v DC current distributed throughout your TV. For example a PC power supply takes 120-240 ac~ and changes it to 3 volt -- DC which is an orange wire then 5v -- DC red wire 12v ~ DC yellow wire. So why go through all that circuitry to change the energy if it's DC energy needed to run your electronics at home? The circuitry needed for these changes eats energy.

I live in area that is serviced by TVA. Was reading today that while they have duel metering they have decided to eliminate their power buy back program. so best to look at doing things DIY and really chop down the costs of adding a system. I have priced out and currently just purchasing the panels and micro inverters will be under $300 per 500 watt panels. Figure that the cost of the wire, boxes, safety hookup equipment, permits and racking likely will be atleast the same amount . To actually make this work, think at this point does not make sense not to go with batteries. That said.. Likely the batteries will be the same or more than the rest of everything else in the system. Solar pays but helps to actually consider all the variables.

  • @TruckTaxiMoveIt

If a tree falls on some panels does it stop the whole system does the system continue to work what exactly happens?
Can you bifocate or trifocate the system so you have dc to ac as dc-to-dc or direct dc for your continuous heating systems like water heater, boiler, and pool heater?
What is the general impact of a solar system on ones homeowners insurance policy cost -- does it generally cause it to go up or down?

The understanding that they are designing these solar panels for the batteries to exceed heat due to them being built in the Attic versus in a trough and laundry room where there have no heat index and they're capable of giving back the grid 3 to 4 times a day if you do this so instead of them being 180° in the attic and give him back to grid once and a homeowner breaking even if you have 30 batteries or stop one capacitor for them to pick up and one deck capacitor now it's more efficient

Ok. I live in Michigan. I understand the only time of year we get the most sun is in the summer. I had 20 panels installed 15 months ago, the salesman said 20 panels would take care of all the electricity needed for my home, no matter what time of year. So why is it I've only saved a total of maybe $150.00 ? I have never received any money/payment from my electric supplier/company. I have yet to see where this saves you money.

    • @Blueknight1960
      @Blueknight1960 4 роки тому

Because according to this video, 20 panels are only 5 kw and I would bet your household needs more than 5 kw. Solar is probably great if you have a small house with a couple of people living there and some gas operated appliances (stove, water heater and a wood burning heater for house heat). But a big house that's all electrical appliances, multiple tv's, computers, split system a/c's ,heaters, heat pump, more than 4 people living there, you'll need at least a 20 kw system to run the house. Plus it'll take years for the system to pay for itself ( if even possible). If I can't run my entire household off the system at the same time for at least a week, it's useless. Better off with a 15 kw or bigger generator that can run the entire household.

I had my light bill paid up to date for a month just to see what the next bill looked like, & it was like the panels aren't doing me any good. Even in the summer my bill is still $800-$100.00 every month. The salesman told us 20 panels would take care of all the power we need for this house so that's what we went with. Honestly, I feel I was scammed.

@@shawnhammack5525 $800 -- $1000 a month for electric? Damn!!! That's seems way over the top for a house. Where I'm at right now, the electric bill is about $135- $140 a month. Nice job 👍
I suggest you make a video on electric thermal energy. In particular, electric thermal energy using heat pumps and induction stoves.
There are three commercially available residential electric appliances which use heat pump technology to produce thermal energy.
These are mini split variable compressor cooling and heating air space conditioners using heat pumps, cloth dryers using heat pumps, and hot water heat pumps.
Using all three of these devices in a home will save on average a minimum of 10-kWh per day.
Approximately 6 to 7-kWh in daily savings come from a hot water heat pump.
Approximately 2 to 4-kWh in daily savings come from a heat pump cloth dryer.
Approximately, 2-kWh in hourly savings (using a single horsepower compressor) come from a variable inverter heat pump air conditioner.
The savings with space conditioning appliances are dependent on the actual size of the compressor replaced, the average number of hours used per day, and the number of units used.
The other two appliances are typically linked less to the weather.
Induction stoves are more efficient than either gas stoves or traditional electric stoves. Induction stoves can save on average about 50% over traditional stoves.
All four of these appliances share a common energy source. They all work with electricity. Using solar energy with them will maximize residential energy savings.
There are energy diverters that are used to maximize self consumption of solar energy when using appliances like hot water heat pumps and electric vehicles. One brand that comes to mind is myEnergi. It has an energy diverter that when combined with an optional board can be used with a hot water heat pump.
All other energy diverters I know will activate a hot water heating element when excess solar energy is available, but as explained above a hot water heat pump requires for every three units of energy stored as hot water only one unit of energy. Conventional diverters will use about 1.05 units of energy for one unit of stored energy as hot water.

Here’s some facts they don’t tell you about solar power:
    1. Initial cost for a small 6kw system in around $25,000.
    2. There are federal and state tax credits for installing systems, but these usually only add up to around 26% of the system cost and these incentives will start reducing beginning in 2023. So you could save around $6,500 on the initial installation.
    3. After the initial install, are there additional costs? Yes, the system needs to be maintained. This takes around 70 per yr for the panels and around the same amount of time for the batteries. What’s this cost? Professional cleaning and service costs around $100 per hour or about $14,000 per year. Yes, you can do this yourself but it is a time commitment of around 16 hrs per month. How much is your time worth?
    4. Are there any other costs I should know about? Yep, the batteries will not last forever. They gradually lose their ability to hold a charge and the amount of charge reduces over time. They will need to be replaced. Low maintenance inexpensive batteries cost around $5,000 each, with most systems having at least two batteries, that’s around $10,000 every 5 years.
    5. What kind of savings will I see from my solar system? Well the average cost for a 2,000 sf energy efficient home is around $200 per month or $2,400 a year. Yes, you can run your home, if you limit your useage, completely on solar power. The monthly cost? About $2,150 per month. This represents a savings of around $250 per month or $3,000 per year. You could, as noted, do the maintenance yourself and increase your savings to around $6,000. Before committing to performing this work, you will need good access to your panels. Most panels are located on home roofs. This presents some safety considerations as you will be working on a sloped surface and need the appropriate gear to prevent the possibility of doing severe damage to yourself.
    6. Lastly, is it all worth the effort? Well that has to be considered carefully. If you have plenty of time on your hands, are in good physical condition, have all the appropriate safety gear, and a good knowledge of how to properly maintain a solar system, then solar may be a good fit for you. Is the savings worth the effort? Up to you.
