People who don’t appreciate Honda will always complain. Honda is built right here in the USA 🇺🇸 not Mexico. American cars are better here and made period . I can’t complain because I really appreciated the technology behind every Honda product. Honda is Honda and they don’t care about competition and they shouldn’t. I love my Honda Pilot 2022 . It’s not designed for totally off road but in the circumstances snows or mud I was very surprised.
Sorry you guys blew it. You didn’t test it anywhere its limits and then without any evidence decide that it can’t handle much of anything. I disagree. I have a 2021 Ridgeline which is mechanically identical and I hit deep muddy ruts pulling a 4000 trailer and the AWD system was amazing. Pulled right through. Mud up to the wheels and the trailer was coated with mud. As an aside, I do wish it had more ground clearance. I added 3 aftermarket skid plates.
So this case, you blew it. Next time if you have a negative review on a vehicle, have a solid reason, not just an opinion or guess.
Totally agree with you! My Ridgeline was primo! Miss that truck. I'll have another one soon. Chevy, Dodge, Ford guys will always hate on a Ridgeline.....because it's just better! Hands down!
Every suv is slowly becoming a lifted mini van. Change my mind.
I’m keeping my M35A2 😂
Instead of trading, I’m keeping the wife’s Toyota sienna and put a 6 inch lift and all terrain tires on it 🤣🤣 She wanted a highlander
No sliding doors and *THANK GOD FOR THAT.* Chrysler Pacifica still out there tho.
Haha amazing comment
All of these “Cuvs” are basically slightly lifted minivans. But marketing means you’re cool in one vs a minivan that is uncool.
If you put some real offroad tires on they do okay. Even Toyota puts weak tires on the TRD Pro as opposed to a TA K02 or a Toyo offroad tire. I have seen one of these sunk in mud get out with the Goodrich TA K02s so they're more than a soccer mom van in the rough but no rock crawler..
Ok, so.....we have a 2016 Honda Pilot EX-L AWD. Pull a 16ft trailer with 4 four wheelers. One Yamaha Raptor, and 3 Recons. Or the Honda Pioneer, and two wheelers. We either go to Turkey Bay at LBL, or the Hack Shack, Painville Ky. Getting to the Shack is super rough! The Pilot had ZERO problems doing it, with over 120k miles. We literally just traded it in today for the 2022 Trailsport Pilot. I've owned a 2007 Ridgeline, highly recommend as well!!
Im pretty sure my 1988 Lincoln town car has more ground clearance
Nice Car!!😃
I didn't like the close proximity of the exhaust header pipe running so close to the oil pan. (just an observation)
Time for you to check the offroad worthiness of the real trailsport edition Honda Pilot 2023 Trailsport
Does it have an upgraded suspension ?
It's a nice family SUV to go to the mall in the snow. End of story.
A person would be crazy to take this car off road.
If you are going to test something, then test it. You were driving like it was your first time.
Pilot I might consider, Trailsport package no.
Garbage edition..or rip-off edition
That's a pretty bad dash display and it's from Honda! I feel that Honda has lost his way in the past decade or so. I know i will not buy one.
To give you an idea of the limits of this vehicle, I did Potash/Shafer trail in Moab recently in my 2019 Honda Pilot LX AWD. That trail used to be considered easy by most people before the floods of 2022. Now the trail has deep ruts and shelves. It pushed my Pilot to its limits ground clearance wise but the AWD system was surprisingly good. The Pilot hardly spun a wheel throughout the entire 19 mile trail. I also own a Subaru and I would take the Pilot AWD over the Subie any day.
I did replace the All-Season factory tires before my trip with Falcon Wildpeak AT Trail and they are amazing both on and offroad. Slightly less MPG over stock tires but well worth the investment.
Try watching Sarah-n-tuned sometime to see how an unbiased review should be made. Spoiler alert, the Ridgeline easily went up the same steep hill that some 4x4s could not.
this video was surprisingly biased, I expected better from TK, he's usually more even keeled. Here he sounds like that b1tch Roman from TFL. EVERYBODY knows that it is not a Bronco or 4Runner, but yet they still seem to hold that against it. I'm going to make a channel where I test "sport" trims of body on frame trucks and SUVs on the race track and ask, "Is it worthy of the Sport name"?
I completely agree. We bought a 2021 Black Edition new, and everything I saw here looks pretty much the same as ours function wise (different tires and accenting of course). These are not meant to be heavy-duty off roaders or taking them overlanding, but as you demonstrated, they are excellent to be able to get out of most more aggressive situations as long as there is clearance. The torque vectoring is awesome, and as far as power, this Pilot has plenty for its class. These are also excellent in snow, and so far no issues getting stuck or losing control! Back to the power...after owning it a year, I finally learned the proper way to drive it...In Sport Mode! If you floor the gas pedal, you will not believe the sound coming out of the engine! It's fast too for its size and in sport mode, kinda fun to drive! It's actually a fantastic engine, and a major reason we got the Pilot, and I Looked at all SUVs out there.
Honda just needed to keep the Pilot name relevant until the redesign is out end of this year, because the design is taking no risks at all and definitely looks like a family vehicle...it's not bad tho, and has aged pretty well I think considering how long its been out, but i like the boxy design best. I am hoping the redesign is more boxy and aggressive. My only reservation about getting the new one, is I'm afraid it won't have a bluray player. This Pilot comes with one and is SUCH a selling feature to keep the family entertained on long road trips, which this car does easily once we add a storage box on top (bullet billwe call it). Great family car, just dated on exterior design, but amazing for the purpose it was intended.
Wow, dad nailed it! Minced no words and I'm sure he's right.
Great video! What are your thoughts about the Honda Pilot Trailsport in comparison to the Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek and Ford Explorer Timberline?
Clearly they just don't like Hondas. Sure, Trail sport is marketing but the i-VTM 4 system is pretty great and provides good low end torque for a vehicle without true 4-LO or a locking differential. Reliability can't be beat, either.
Dad nailed it. You won't miss it when you sell it. Japanese make great appliances that go from a to b. But there's little emotion and character in them. Pilot is a perfect example
I think that is mass market every car maker. They have a halo car and the rest is for the masses to buy and forget about driving in their daily commute
Little emotion? That’s all SUVs that aren’t made for performance. My s2k and NSX begs to differ. Supras, MR2, Civic Type R and Miatas. List goes on.
Hope you can get your hands on the 2023 model for an old vs new comparison.
I'm waiting for you to test the new 2023 Honda Pilot Trailsport...I think you'll find it's much better.
Right after I buy new "worn out jeans", and boots that look "dirty and scuffed" I'll jump on a B S bandwagon like so many of the sheep can't wait to follow.
First gen Pilot was the best of all generations. Great packaging, reliable with great 4wd system. And yes, it could off road in tough conditions thanks to its lockable rear diff
I have the 2007 version. I'm just looking around now as it's near 145k miles, but yes the 4x4 is nice but can't really take advantage when doing normal driving on the wet roads, you can only do it on loose and muddy terrain.
I have Ridgeline, my only concern is getting out of my driveway after the snow plows go through. Is it a good off road truck , no ?
I've had other 4x4 trucks that have never seen a dirt road ,but that's me .
Happy trails.
But you gotta admit, the under bed storage is super cool...literally, it can be used as a cooler hahaha (Dad joke)!
9:04 but the thing with the Subarus, they are mechanically different than the normal ones, lift, shorter ratios ect. The Pilot... Has slightly more aggressive tires. And that's it. I'm ok with off-road packages, as long as it actually offers something more than the normal ones. Imo, just swapping tires doesn't.
Maybe a good vehicle for a kid hauler where the parent has a job they can't call off for when it snows like a nurse
Question: How do automakers measure ground clearence? My Maverick FX4 with the standard size tire is rated at 8.3" yet my front bumper sits the lowest at 7 and change inches. If Ford was legit I probably would have less battle scars. Just feel like it's disappointing.
Ground clearance on a vehicle should be the lowest point on the body (not including suspension, wheel hub, etc.) but I've seen some people measure from the jack points. Which I feel is misleading, because most vehicles will start hitting elsewhere first when their clearance is tested, eg. the bumper, exhaust, engine components.
Is it really the bumper or the flexible air dam?
@@markleckband4495 Either way it's not ideal to be damaging either.
Your Bronco will be in a Mexican trash compactor well before the Honda's engine is even broken in.
I have been awaiting the pilot review from the King Crew ;)
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@TruckKing I truly enjoy all your content, I like the humbleness and expertise beyond everyone and each of your postings
Trail Sport ! What a joke but very similar to calling the ford maverick and Santa Cruz a truck kinda has some of the parts but not enough to validate the name !
Can you show the Cherokee trail hawk underneath? I’m curious to see if it’s steel or aluminum
I own one and all skid plates are thick steel.
GREAT JOB GUYS
I like the rack to check out the undercarriage.
285 horsepower
The thing I liked most was Howard's Tee shirt. Kind of looks like the punisher. This is a nice SUV but a real 4WD is much better...4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra. Honda just offers soft off roaders. The brand should attempt making a serious off roader. They are a great auto maker and have the know how. They could borrow their ATV knowledge and marry it to a real 4WD truck or SUV.
Definitely agree with Howard and Steve. This is the (not a) minivan. And it's just not a cool looking vehicle. It looks comfortable though, prob a great daily or road tripper. While the off-road capability doesn't compare, it's probably a lot more comfortable and nicer to drive than my 4Runner. The Pilot may have some off-road potential though. There is a UA-camr that has the Passport version of this, with 3.5" lift, skid plates, and good tires. It's actually quite impressive what he's able to do with that.
I lifted my 2021 awd pilot by 2 inches and put the largest off road tires that would fit without scraping. Also added skid plates to it. I spent 30k to buy it used with 29000 miles and 4k for tires lift kit and skid plates. I have gone through snow deep mud and drove on a beach with no problems.
Look, I have a Ridgeline and Civic but a Trail Sport is a joke. Chevy Blazer, same. All great for snow, ice, and dirt trails. Credit to to big Bronco, it has off-road creditability.
Those control arms had quite a bit of surface rust for being that new. Guess that’s a Canadian vehicle for you, we get similar results in Utah during our winters. Still surprising’
The more aggressive tires reduce the fuel efficiency so the clever marketing team gave this trim an appropriate name to placate persnickety consumers. Maybe a moot point considering the Pilot's big, bulbous rear end.
I think in some cases, the marketing gives people confidence in vehicles in an off-road situation that is not warranted. There is more and more of this lately with "crossovers".
These SUV things seem to be just shortened mini vans really.. Good morning Howard and Steve!!😃 Great video.
1998 Mazda MPV. These suv and cuv are trying to catch up with another discontinued vehicle.
Honda can't, don't and won't build REAL off road vehicles. PERIOD
I would love to see a comparison between the Pilot and other SUV’s in its class.
You mean... Off the Walmart Parking lot road?? Sure! Short answer - "No".
Nice car but I don’t understand the “less is more”” thing the car companies try to push on us.
Sounds like the added lift comes from the plus tire size. Really doubt Honda messed with the suspension.
Looks like dad was really enjoying the bugs out there!
Not going to lie… wanted to see the pilot hit the hydro-line lol
This a off road edition for tall grass only 😆
HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY EVERYONE
Like the black headliner!!
Had to pass on one of these at the last minute. It still uses a timing belt, non self adjusting valves, and from what I hear the ZF 9 speed is a disaster. The build quality is amazing though. Closing the door feels like a bank vault.
My wife has a 2020 passport AWD. 46k miles and literally no problems. Literally. Not even had a piece of plastic pop out of place. Nothing. Keeping it until 120k miles and probably picking up a trail sport.
I have a 2020 Ridgeline with the ZF 9 and its working great. I think the ZF 9 issues you are referencing were a thing in 2019 only.
Thank you for saying it as it is!
Welcome!
This thing is a joke as an "off-roader". It has only 1.1" additional ground clearance over a Nissan Versa. The Versa has 6.8" of ground clearance and it's a sedan!
I think they look as tough as any suv out there
