Hi Clamming Friends, On Sunday, 12/15 @ 10:00 am we will host a live stream where we’ll shuck and clean the clams we caught on Saturday. Then, we’ll deep fry the clams and make yummy tacos. If you want to join us, subscribe to our channel and switch the bell icon to “All” Notifications. That way you will be notified when we go live. Looking forward to seeing you!
I had no idea there were regulations before watching this! I visited Huntington Beach yesterday and randomly decided I wanted to go shell hunting with my brother to see who would find the prettiest, most interesting sea shell. I was digging for what I thought was a rock hoping it would be a conch shell, but when I pulled it out, it was a big pismo clam! It was about the size of my palm! Since it wasn’t a shell by itself and I noticed it was too hefty for it to be hollow, I put the big guy back where I found it. I ended up finding a half of a sand dollar a while later.
First off, thank you for watching the video. It doesn't surprise me about your discovery. We walk our dog there and have seen the shells and already had plans to check it out in the fall/winter. I really appreciate you sharing this info with me.
Nice video. I was just up in Pismo Beach fishing. There’s an information sign on the boardwalk. It says the last legal sport caught pismo clam was caught in 1993. Guess that’s outdated..haha. When I was surfing fishing I could feel lots of clams under my feet. So seems like they’ve made a comeback. Thanks again.
@@ryeginliving2664 skunked on the barred surf perch. But the next day, I fished out of Avila Beach,Patriot Sportfishing, and got a nice limit of rock fish.
Hi Rye, After watched couple of your video clips, we took couple days off, reserved a hotel room, drove to Pismo beach and was excited... 2 days later, drove home with no clam. Didn't find one pass 4" 😁. Well, we got to eat clam chowder at the pier 😄
Hi Matthew, the scale in the video was mounted on the clamming fork over 40 years ago by my dad. I don't think they're available anymore, however, you might find one on eBay or a local garage / yard sale in Pismo. There's a secondhand shop that sells used surfboards and other stuff in town. You might find one there. If not, the owner would likely be able to point you in the right direction. Hope this helps.
I went a few times near Huntington beach when i was a kid. Now I'm retired (its been a long time lol), and was thinking about going again. Where do you go if you don't mind me asking?
Interesting that you should mention Huntington Beach. When we take our dog there to walk the beach we see Pismo clam shells. Curious if they have returned. Regarding your question about where we go, email me at rshiroma81@gmail.com
Great video thanks for sharing. I’ve been going to Pismo my whole life and never tried clamming. My grandparents had a clamming fork on their trailer but never attempted to use it. I’ll give it a try with my kiddos next time we go to Pismo. That area of the beach doesn’t look familiar, would you mind sharing a relative location to start looking?
Hi, sorry for the late reply. Nothing special … I simply go to stretches that have less pressure, that is to say, move away from other clammers. I also make a note of where we clammed previously and move a little further down the beach.
@@ryeginliving2664 I was hoping for some help figuring this out as I’ve never clammed before. What You Need To Know: CDPH is advising not to consume sport-harvested bivalve shellfish gathered from Santa Barbara County due to detection of dangerous levels of domoic acid. The naturally occurring domoic acid toxin can cause illness or death in humans and cooking does not destroy the toxin. The map they provide shows the whole coast being affected by this and recommends not eating sport- caught shellfish. I found a list of what they are testing and it’s mostly farm raised mussels. That being said, with my lack of experience with clams it freaked me out! What are your thoughts? I was out in the surf yesterday and there are times of big clams! They feel like potatoes underfoot. I wanted to make ceviche with some.

I live is LA area and feel like i am not enjoying the best of south california due to the busy work life. You inspired me so much!
Los Angeles / SoCal has so much to offer.

I was there in the 90’s and caught plenty of clams. Hope you slayed the barred perch. Have you ever fished Oso Flaco, south of Oceano?

Clam forks with fixed gauges are now available at Pismo Bob's on Price Street.
Thank you for that info!
Clam forks and gauges are also available at Miner’s Ace Hardware on Grand Ave in Grover Beach.

Just saw your email. I’ll respond there 👍🏼
Hi! Great video. I'm really curious where you got that measuring tool that you have mounted to the pitchfork. Are they sold locally?

Dude great video. Love seeing the happy family too!
Next up you'll have to show me how to catch stripers on the surf!
Thank you 🤙🏼. Haven’t caught a striper yet so unfortunately I can’t help you there.
Why wouldn't the warden just have started by measuring the smallest one first lol? Knowing that any that were larger were clearly legal.
I thought the same thing at the time. But, he was a trainee so he was working “by the book”.
great point! coz he can't tell which one is the smallest... 🤣🤣🤣

Can you share where you bought your pitch fork? Please and thank you❤️
Our clamming forks were handed down to us from our fathers. Forks and gauges are available at Miner’s Ace Hardware on Grand Ave in Grover Beach.
Thank you for the tip
You bet 👍🏼
Hello! Was this video made at Pismo beach? I want to visit with my wife, looks like a nice quiet beach.
Hi G Sauce! Please email me.
My email is rshiroma81@gmail.com
I thought you couldn’t use any shovel or pitch fork or anything similar but just your hands?
You can use pitch forks to catch Pismo clams.
What brand clam fork is that? Or did you make your own?
I don't know as the clamming fork is around 50 years old. It was handed down from my dad.
When is clamming season in Pismo ?
You can clam for Pismo clams all year long, however, we prefer to clam in the fall and winter.
Thank you for detailed information!! Great video. Would you mind sharing your spot? 😊
Thank you for watching. I replied to your email.
Nice video ! I love pismo clams. Would you mind sharing the location please ?

Hello. What do you look for when deciding what part of the beach to try? Thanks!

Thanks, will give it a try next time I'm in the area.
@@Northern_California_Fishing Have fun!
Looks like fun
Lots of fun 👍🏼
Do you think a -.2 tide is enough?
Not ideal, but it’s doable. You won’t be able to clam very deep. It’s worth a try 👍🏼
@@ryeginliving2664 thank you for your insight
Is harvesting allowed all year?
Yes, but clams are typically taken during the fall and winter.
I’m down here in October but it’s not safe to eat Pismo clams right now 😢
Why aren’t the clams safe to eat?

Thanks for the awesome video and the great tips....i sent you an email just asking a few things....thanks!

Take me with you please it looks fun N I want to try catching it👍
😊
Oh noooo!!!! Please keep to yourselves people will begin to take them alllll 😢💔💔💔
We’ve been clamming for 30+ years. There are plenty of clams to go around as long you’re willing to put in the hard work to find them.
