This is exactly what i’ve been feeling.. listening to it excessively can get very overwhelming sometimes. Not only is it distracting, but i also feel like it increases my anxiety & deppression. Great video, im about to start a 1 month cleanse now!
I totally get what you mean. I was once hospitalised due to mental issues and depression, and the psychiatrist told me to stop listening the type of music I used to and take a break from it. If you're wondering what type of music I used to listen, it was mostly Sia and Billie Ellish, but I only listened to their sad songs(or songs with sad lyrics) unintentionally (I guess). So from then on(six months), I've never listened to music again. Disclaimer: I'm not saying Sia n Billie gave me these problems. 2020 was hell for us all.
I searched for this because i felt like i have music addiction. I just couldn't be in silence, made me anxious. And also my sleep was disturbed by echoes in my head.
Great video! The interesting fact I have here is that in Islam there is a majority of scholars who either entirely prohibit music or tell us to have boundaries, the reason for that is because music, as you said, it can really stick to your mind. So the type of music you listen to might also be worth noting, what type of lyrics are you consuming, because even though we take it as for granted, anything and everything we give space to in our minds, we allow it to affect us. I'm a person who finds herself deeply affected by what I'm watching, reading or listening to , and about a year ago, I tried to change the type I limit myself to (I don't tolerate negative connotations, swear words etc) and/or stop listening and yes, I have found that I get a sense of my own opinions on the world, free of influence, moreover, I'm able to concentrate more with no annoying stuff repeating the same word 300 times per minute. I would suggest you search Islam's view on music because you'll found some books exactly dealing with this issue,( I don't remember any rn) I think you'll be very surprised at the validity of this concept and how long ago it was discussed. Good luck!
The most influential thing of music is its instrumental melody which captures our mind. The lyrics of the song is less important here. Good lyrics associated with instruments may be equally harmful for our soul. Its my opinion (foolish !!!)
I had this insight today and after a bit of research I've found your video. If I start my day with music my mind is all over the place. On the other hand, without music I recall information faster and I get to truly organize my thoughts properly. This is one of the best videos on UA-cam. Thank you and keep up the good work! :)
As a musician obviously I won't stop listening to music, however during my monthly 3 day fast I also do a dopamine detox and that includes stop listening to music. It clears the mind and makes room for new ideas.
This is such an interesting topic. Although music may seem harmless, in some way too much of it does cloud our mind. The other day I thought about this too, it seemed as if i’m blocking my mind from thinking.
Ahmed Jaf thanks a lot! I am actually on a one month music fast right now, and I am planning to post a video about it when the month is up! Subscribe if you’d like to be notified when it’s up :)

Its not just the lyrics, music as music, the beats and instrumental of it changes your mood, and "stimulants" that change the way you think are automatically bad for you mental health, speaking from experience here, i listen to music all the time and its screwing the way I think, im thinking of quiting all together.
Music is one of the curse that posions my soul. I give it up as the many things that are making me weak and shallow. Pleasure is pain, is weakness that is growing.
You make a well established point about silence. But, I believe listening to happy music or relaxing music can be good for you. It's when you listen to depressing music or angry music (too much) it can have an adverse effect on your mind. Anyway, good video.
This is so true. My musical hero is Floyd Cramer, and if someone were to say to me that he is only a distraction, I would laugh in their face probably. There is so much music out there that is so beautiful, and it is a big pet peave to hear people lump music into a broad category and say it's a distraction or that it is bad.
I agree with this! I can't concentrate if I have music playing. However, music can help me to put me in a good mood, but as soon as I'm in that good mood, I need to stop the music and go do. I think that if you don't 'act' while you're feeling good, the music can also drown you down. It's like watching a motivational video, you get hyped, but if you don't go out and do anything than in the end you're gonna get tired of watching those videos. Btw, keep up the good work!
I totally agree. I love music but it can really distract your mind and prevent you from concentrating. I'm on a 30 day music fast right now, so stay tuned to see the video over that :) Thanks a lot!

Your listening to music in a very basic way. Pick the music apart count the time. Isolate each instrument and notice the harmony. Sounds like you need to stop listening to pop music. For me it lights my brain up and inspires creativity and inspiration. Brings out moods and emotions. There are so many genres for all the different types of mental stimulation your looking for. Just expand your love of music don’t stop listening that’s not a world I want to live in.
Great video ! Myself being an active musician I started detoxing from listening music since few weeks (walking, background music while working, workout, in the car etc.) . I love the silence. When do I do music as a musician ? Only when I practice, rehearsal time and perform with bands. Somehow the music feels deeper/meaningful when you intentionally listen to it. So, also not listen to songs/albums to accompany activities, but really make time to intentionally listen to songs (as you would do for a movie/reading). Somehow you get more into the music then, like you understand more what the music/composer wants to 'tell' ,which then is a big value to the musician also ;-) .
when i went to university, i would not watch tv or movies or videos but i would listen to music frequently after about 2 or 3 months of this, my brain started working on another level i could effortlessly process things visually and think about them clearly during the summer months i was working and not studying so i watched whatever i wanted to. this intermittent media fasting has a very powerful effect on me and frees your mind to work the way it has evolved to conversely, flooding yourself with media has the opposite effect !

What the heck are y'all listening to? The type of music I listen to is relaxing and helps me focus. I tend to gravitate towards relaxing music because I have bad anxiety. I'm also a musician, so hearing you say that listening to music takes no effort cracks me up, because when you're a musician you do put effort into listening.
Because as a musician you listen on another level. you hear the instruments, you hear how it's done and you think, can I play this? Sometimes I wish I didn't know anything about music theory or instruments and could just listen to the song.
I like the fact that I know about music because I can hear it in greater detail. I'm extremely visually impaired, nearly totally blind. A long time ago I went to a fireworks display with my grandma. She was talking about how pretty the fireworks were and trying to describe all the pretty colors and very small details, but it sailed right over my head. All I could see were the flashing lights. Granted they were kinda cool, but she enjoyed them on a whole different level because she could pick up small details. I remember thinking that the way she saw the fireworks was the way I hear music, and the way a non-musician might hear music could sorta be compared to the way I saw the fireworks.
