I've done my share of routing in the past. Got pretty good at sliding dovetail joinery, not anywhere near master level, but got done what I needed . along with decorative edging. etc.
Being a huge Ryobi fan, have had my eye on this model, tired of the corded tools.
The best nearly dustless way of routing I've found is using a router table....ah..but the set ups involved....lol.
I must say, this video was extremely well done & professional, very informative, no stone left unturned here that I could see..... I think I'm in love now......... with the tool, of course.😘
😂🤣😂 glad you love your router! And thanks for your kind feedback on the video!!
Very refreshing to see a woman giving good advises on how to use power tools!
I'm just a happy amateur and may not have the same ability for precise motion as a professional, but I would actually position the base plate in the opposite direction to what you demonstrated.
- When using the Roundover bit and the Side Groove bit, having more area of the base plate on the work piece will reduce the chance of tilting the vertical axis of the router (which causes uneven cuts).
- When using the vertical Groove Cut bit, the distance (of the groove) from the edge guide will not be influenced by any rotation of the router around the vertical axis if the circular part of the base plate is held against the edge guide.
Excellent input! Thank you so much! I was also thinking the base plate should have been the other way for the round over bit. But I positioned it like the instruction manual (which I thought was weird). I'm glad to hear that my instincts were correct. Thanks for watching!! :)
Just bought my Ryobi router and happened upon your video.. You saved me a lot of frustration. Great video.
Such a simply explained and thorough walkthrough. Thank you!
Im a newbie to using a router and i was somewhat nervous but after watching your video it definitely makes me feel comfortable using it, will use it on my 1st project this weekend so hopefully everything goes well!!
Fantastic! I’m glad my video. Boosted your confidence! Blessings on your woodworking project! I’d love to hear what you’re making and how it turned out!
Thank you so much for this easy to follow tutorial. I was on the struggle bus trying to read the instructions that came with the tool.😂
Oh friend! I’m so glad this video was helpful for you! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! Happy woodworking!
😁👍
You should teach woodworking youtubers how to present their ideas!!! All I needed to know showed on the router I plan to buy in under 15 minutes!
I saw you on CBS 11. You have a great story and a true inspiration for all women!
Hello Ryane, I just purchased my Ryobi PCL 424 router and I was in need of a “crash” course on how to operate it. Thanks to your detailed instructions, I have entered the wonderful world of wood routing…Thanks again!…😊
Wonderful! I’m glad you found the video helpful!! Did your router come with the vacuum attachment? And where did you buy it? My viewers have had difficulty finding the vacuum attachment!
@@ryanetotherescue I bought the router itself from Amazon. I also purchased the edge guide, battery and vacuum attachment, all separately, from Amazon as well. Having no experience in using a router, I went through several pieces of scrap wood in learning how to use it. I did notice that the operator must put positive pressure on the machine and also ensure that it is perfectly level with the wood, especially when doing edge routing. I first used the round over bit and noticed that I was making some “ugly” cuts but quickly figured out what I was doing wrong…Thanks again!
I thought your video was very informative for this specific tool. I just bought this and watched other UA-cam videos on how to use it, and yours was the best. Can’t wait to see more.
OMG!!! You really blessed me with this comment!!! I'm so happy you found it helpful!! Women with power tools!! Whoop!! Be sure to watch all my other power tool videos!
Thanks,, have watched many. Used a grizzly shaper for quite a while. Not really an expert with hand held router... Just to get some advice, I have searched You Tube. Most clips did not even explain depth set up..... This was very excellent demo.......Thanks Again..
Thank you so much for your kind comments!!! I’m so glad you found the video helpful!! 😄👍
Thank you so much, just bought one of these and this video makes it so much easier to set up than the written instructions.
I’m so glad the video was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment and giving me your feedback! Have fun with your routering projects!
Great info. Just got my new Ryobi cordless router. Your tip on installing the vacuum port was really helpful. Ryobi makes very good tools that are more affordable and last a long time. Thanks again!
This is THE BEST now to use it videos I've ever seen. I was struggling to get the cut depth I need and the explanation in this video made it very clear. Time to go cut some grooves.
Perfect, thank you. Had some questions about bit height, and you answered them.
Thanks for this video! I bought this after watching your video and realizing it's much easier than it looks. I made my very first outdoor table and holy cow does the routed edge really make it look good. Wish I could share a photo, but trust me, it's wonderful! Thanks again for the tutorial and boost of confidence.
Thanks for the kind message! I’m so glad my video boosted your confidence! I would looooooooooove to see your table and routered edge!!!!! Post a picture on instagram and tag @ryanetotherescue and I will see it!!!😁
Just came across your video and its definitely one of the better ones! Can you do more videos on the different types of bits and what they are used for? Great video!
Thanks for the demo and explanation of the dust port install. Everything else was obvious to me but that had me stumped. You're right that the instructions were not very clear.
Thanks for sharing! The few other videos I see online are not nearly as descriptive. You speak very clearly and confidently, I appreciate you :)
Im so glad it was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment! 😁
I like the way you explane things. I've watch a few videos on the plc424 and your's was the best. Thanks
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I appreciate that! Have fun with your woodworking projects!!!
I have not seen anyone like you in the comprehensive explanation.. Very useful, please give me the purchase link.. With my heartfelt regards.
First of all, thanks so much for your kind comments on my video. I’m so glad you found it helpful!
Second, I have no idea why but Ryobi does not offer this exact model anymore. I can’t find it anywhere!! But you could use this link to buy the router without the dust collector attachment.

And then, here is a dust collector you can purchase off Etsy. I don’t know if it works well. If you purchase it and use it, I’d love to have your feedback on how it worked. I think the other viewers would like to know as well.

One of the best how to videos I've viewed. Great job all around. Thanks for doing this.
You are inspiring! I’m more of the fixer upper in my relationship so I’m really excited about this channel and all your doing here.
Oh I am so happy I found you! Looking forward to following you and learning more!
Excellent video - thanks! And you showed what various bits do, too, and important safety precautions. One thing: the dial you called power is not about power, it is a speed control.
Thanks for the nice comments!
I suppose I was considering speed and power to be the same thing…
but I appreciate the correction! 😁
That was a great instructional video, and I will be buying the same router. You showed all the working features with great detail that was awesome! Stay safe!
Very informative and I love how you showed everything from different angles. Very helpful!
Hello ryan A new subscriber here i was looking for videos on how to operate ryobi router and use bits. Thank u for making it so simple ❤ please share with how we can make some baseboard trim with that router and which bit to use. Baseboard trims are very expensive specially if u want to do your she shed all by yourself 🤦♀️🙃
Welcome aboard! Thanks for subscribing! And thank you for the video suggestion. Best wishes on your “she shed”! You can do it!
💪😁💕
Merry Christmas to an inspiring woman and your daughters🎄
Just saw your interview on CBSDFW Chanel11.
Can’t wait to empower myself through your inspiring and positive constructive, learn how to videos.💪🙏🏽🙏🏽
Oh yay!!!! I’m glad you found us!!!! Welcome! And Merry Christmas to you too !!!
Thanks for a very detailed video. I'm definitely a new subscriber after watching. 😊
Wish you had a video on every day just to admire your good looks. Must have spent a fortune on your teeth. They’re just perfect. By the way. It was a very informative video but had trouble concentration on the topic. It was about lawn sprinklers right?
Thank you for such ah informative video! Really excellent understanding of how everything works, very detailed, helps a lot! I am awaiting delivery of mine, will be a massive help with a lot of upcoming projects. Only issue is I've realised it's shipping from the US (I'm in the UK), so the micro adjustment will be imperial... I'll have to work out these darn inches it seems 😂
Inches and centimeters!!!
Why can’t we all agree??
Maybe the US will convert to metric one day!🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Great video. Learned what I needed.
Thank you for the great feedback! And thanks for taking time to comment! Happy woodworking to you!
Thank you so much for creating this wonderful vdo
Well, thank you so much for saying so! I’m glad you found it helpful!😄🙌🏽
Well, thank you so much for saying so! I’m glad you found the video helpful!😁🙌🏽
I think the vac attachment kinda overshadows the cordless freedom of movement, but you convinced me to get the cordless Ryobi. I'll just use it outside, like my corded routers and save the shop vac for cleaning up. Subbed.
I'm currently in the market for a cordless palm router, and since I'm already in the Ryobu platform the PCL424 is one that I'm considering. Watched your video to get some info on it, and was surprised at a couple of your "tips." First, since I don't own the router yet I can't be sure, but it certainly appears that the dust collection port should go on the open side, not in place of the flat peice already installed. You will get far better dust collectiong on ANY tool the more enclosed the cutting area is. Second, routers are not ALWAYS used left to right. If you were to use the router on the side farthest from you and move left to right that would be a climb cut and is extremely dangerous as it can cause a kickback event. You should always move a router counter-clockwise around the outside of a work piece. Therefore if you were to route the side farthest from you, you would need to move it from right to left. Also, if you were routing the interior of a work piece one some like the inside of a donut shaped piece for example you would move the clockwise. I would hope you could make an edit or addendum to this video to clear that up. I'd be worried that someone who has never used a router and only watches your video might do something like move in a counter-clockwise motion on the interior of a work piece, or from left to right on side farthest from them, and cause a dangerous kickback and hurt themselves. Otherwise the video was helpful in making my purchase decision.
Hi! Thanks so much for your input! That is very valuable. I didn’t think about the scenarios that you mentioned. I’m not able to edit a video after it is posted. But I can write additional info in the description, which I will do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
@ryanetotherescue You're very welcome. I'm glad you're gonna update the description. Hopefully that will keep people from getting hurt. Your video did help in purchasing decision though, so thanks for that.
Thank you! I appreciate this video!
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
This was awesome.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you found it helpful! And thanks for taking the time to comment!
Hello ….
I have this same router but the collar on mine doesn’t budge at all and you made it look so easy. Any ideas on how to remove it. I tried the one button for the PCL 424 then both and it still won’t come off.
Hello … I have figured it out and now it comes and put back on easy. I had to loosen the screw on the collar itself. Thank You no reply needed. I’ve also subscribed to your channel.
That’s strange! Do you live near a Home Depot? If so, take it in there and have one of their experts figure it out. If it’s not working properly, hopefully they will replace it.
One time my chuck was not working properly and the expert couldn’t figure it out either so they have me a new router! 🙌🏽
Let me know what you find out!
And if that doesn’t work, here is Ryobi’s customer service number:
1-800-525-2579.
Thank you for this video, very helpful! Ryobi instruction manuals are usually decent, but I found this router's instructions rather unclear at times. Btw I'm curious, have you found the measuring ruler on the side useful? I don't see how it could be used consistently / accurately, because every time you install a different bit, the recommended gap that we are supposed to leave between the bit and the collet will vary slightly - not to mention the varying lengths of bits themselves. Maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way?
Perhaps the measurement on the side is useful if you use the same bit over and over, then you can remember your preferred setting.
Very helpful. Do you possibly have a link to the drill bits you used?
It was this set. Says there is only one left on Amazon so you might want to act fast.😊

Turned my base around also for better registration.
@@ryanetotherescue no rounded end off the edge. Square side inboard on face of the workpiece. It’s the widest part of the plate. Being careful I press down with my left thumb to get good registration for this tippy tool. The only thing you can screw up with round-overs is the bit too proud. It just occurred to me to mount an offset handle there to remove my thumb from the proximity of the bit. Still using my 30+ year old pistol grip Makita with a knob on the front.
Thank you, that vacuum attachment gave me so much grief!! 👍
Im glad you found my video and I’m glad it helped. I made the video for YOU!! Thanks for taking the time to comment!!😊
Not sure if anyone is run into this, but my depth kept changing. It was annoying and I found out the screw that secures the black latch needed to be a bit tighter. Since it wasn't tight enough, the bit depth would drop during use. There's a small allen key to tighten it. Tighten it until you can't move the depth guide, then loosen it just enough until it comes free.
Oh ha! I've been wondering what that tool in the garage is 😂
When my husband died, I inherited a whole garage full of tools! I was determined to learn how to use each and every one of them! Thank you for joining me on my journey!
Straight forward and to the point! Just the way ALL tool demo videos SHOULD be! Thank you! I have a LOT of Ryobi tools and love the heck outta them! I'm thinking of adding this one to my others. I've got one from Harbor Freight, but it's junk, ya get what ya pay for! Anyway of doing a "part 2" to this one, maybe show how to free hand for carving signs! THAT would be AWESOME! Thanks!
I’m glad you found my video helpful! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! I appreciate your suggestion, too!😊
How would you do a top groove but not want it to go end to end. You want a small section grooved. How would you start the cut?
Just be firm and steady and press it right in where you want the groove to start. Practice on a scrap piece of wood first! 👍
Who was your source for the dust collector attachment? Is there a part number?
You may have the older model of the Ryobi Router. The new model comes WITH the dust collector attachment. I don’t think you can just buy the attachment and put it on the older one.
@@ryanetotherescue Having just bought mine 2 weeks ago from Amazon, I would assume it's a new model (P601). I have searched many sources for this router, and I have yet to see one with the dust port. Do you have a source?
@@josephtafoya7333 Hi Joseph, the model I used was the PCL 424, I believe the P601 is the previous model. I did some searching for it and Amazon doesn't have it. Home Depot shows it on their website but it says not available. Perhaps they can't keep up with demand at the moment. You may have to wait until they catch up. I'm sorry. Have a nice weekend!
Just FYI you don’t always go left to right that’s wrong.if your routing on the outside its counterclockwise and if it’s on the inside you router clockwise. So if you have a picture frame for example the outside is routed counterclockwise and the inside of the frame clockwise. Also depends which way your bit cuts when spinning. But the above example is most widely used with standard bits.
Yes, you’re right, thank you!!
I can’t change the video once it’s already posted, but I can write this info in the description. Thanks for sharing. 😊
where can i find the attachment?
Did you buy the PCL 424? My dust collector came with that model. I’m not aware of an option to buy it separately.
I'm a huge Ryobi fan, have a lot invested. So much so, it takes (2) Husky 72" toolboxes to store it all. However this router, is simply nothing more than a piece of JUNK. I've bought 2 of them thinking maybe the first one I had for well over a year before I ever used it was just bad out the box with excessive vibration. Nope, then 2nd one was exactly the same, then I happened to be at a friend's home and his does exactly the same thing. 15 minutes of using this (if you make it that long) and you are beat to death by vibration! Again, absolute JUNK and the only Ryobi tool I've ever complained about.
Have you found another router that you like better? If so, what brand is it?
@@ryanetotherescue not really. I use my Festool 1400 most of the time but the few times I need a quick, cordless option, I reach for this thing. Makes my teeth chatter just thinking about it. I will in the near future spend a few $ and get the Makita cordless combo kit. I've used a friend's and it's rock solid
never use the straight side of the router ....
Don’t use the straight side of the base plate? Why is that, I love to learn!!
@@ryanetotherescue if it wobbles the cut will be off, the round side even if it shift it will cut even across
@@-CBA- ok, thanks a million for your comment!! The previous model of Ryobi Router had a square base so I figured it was just a matter of preference! 😊
be careful when buying a ryobi router ........the collar sticks and is hard to remove. check it at the store before buying.
i bought one and the collar WOULD NOT come off. --even the men at the store could not get it off except to stand on it and pull up!!!!!
as i was exchanging it for a second one a lady who had bought one previously said they were notorious for the collar being very hard to remove.
Wow, thank you so much for the heads up! I haven’t had any trouble with mine, but your comment may be helpful to some other viewers. Thank you!
@@ryanetotherescue you are welcome...the router i bought was probably made on a monday or a friday

Thank you very much for the details about how to install the bit. The official Ryobi video for this step magically missed almost all of the steps and I was totally unable to get the bit in until I saw your video.
Oh yay! I’m glad my video was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment!😁
