Even after Corelli officially retired at age 55, he at age 60 still retained the ability to thrill his listeners. R.I.P.

He did well here, here he does not use some habits he was flamed for in his best days, I did think his voice was magnificent even if he used some habits live over the years that raised some critics to call attention to them, here he is singing very well, though his last. I did respond above to Mr. Musala, to his comment about Lanza, a great voice (but it was not a dramatic voice for Otello), at least not in his short life time, dead at age 38, but the voice was very great, even though Mario L. was not an opera singer ( not basically,) but a great operatic voice for sure,. So when John Musalo mentions, as he did above, that opera critics said Lanza was "the best Otello in this" , he fails to mention what critic? In my time Del Monaco was the #1 Otello live and in fact I saw him sing the role in 1959, I was age 19, and no way was Mario Lanza better at Otello in the aria then MDM, nor did he sing it ever live, ML with a less dramatic voice then MDM had, ML was young in that rec. his last film at age 37 made in 1958, but it wasn't an "Otello" voice, at least not at that time, and he died at age 38, great voice though, an operatic tenor , not really an opera singer, though he did some wonderful singing, not just a lot of over the top stuff .

I think, around this time he really came out of his shell again and seriously considered returning to the stage - at least he had multiple appearances and various tv interviews in 1981 and I'm pretty sure he also had his full Otello ready. But he probably listened back to these recordings and decided this is still not up to his own standards, and it's easier to deal with the pressure from the constantly nagging fans than with the pressure of actually having to perform anyway.
But I also heard that he practiced and kept in shape essentially till the end of his life, so that if by chance one day he wakes up with THE VOICE returned he would be ready. He truly was crazy but in the best possible way, with utmost respect towards the art form and singing!

Lanza had one of the most beautiful voices of all time, I always loved the voice, but Corelli was a great opera singer and a different type of voice from Mario and here Franco is past his prime at age 60.
