Re. “Off the rails”, please have a look at… rails? Early railways used a multitude of rail types, and more or less ingenious ways to fix them to gauge. UK had their bullheads, chairs & keys, but a lesser known Norwegian came up with the Pandrol clamp. Quite an impact, as Americans still hammer spikes like it’s the Wild West…? (oh, because it is the Wild West…). Huge thanks for all your shared insights…! 👍
Thank you so much for answering my question - and it was good to hear everyone else's questions too. (Not sure if Anthony Coulls remembers but this is Kathryn & Ziyad; you gave us a tour last year after my story about the NRM's 'Big Shunt' got a place in the area above the Great Hall!)
That vacuum brake would be a good star for an _Off the Rails,_ wouldn't it? I do love these, and this channel. Hope y'all have as much of a good time making them as we do watching! It's good to learn new things.
I knew Tony Marchington, and used to volunteer at Salisbury Hall, so I have a soft spot for LNER top link locos, but absolutely let’s have some stuff on milk (and fish) freight! Dr. Spain for the win!
While the isle of Sodor might not be a real place, the name is taken from Suðreyjar, the name of Scotland's Western Isles in Old Norse, (the language spoken by the Vikings). It meant Southern Islands as they were further south than Orkney, Shetland or the Faroe Islands.
Pre-empting the possibity of "Off the rails" looking at your miniature collection at the NRM. Have you considered doing a similar method to your full size collection of "loaning them out" to allow miniature railways to see these beautiful engines running again at Engineering societies across the country, as you do already, just on the smaller scales. Love the show and all the work everyone does
Can you appease my grandchildren and do a feature on the NRM Roadtrain please? They love riding on it and keep asking questions about it that I cannot answer! Many thanks.
I was wonder why Dr Thomas Spain looks like Brunel. Also, Will the NRM be doing a special gala for the BR class 25's? Their 1Z45 Railtour from 30th March 1991 would be brilliant to recreate.
Hum your answer re the Load Star with no dome, I understand that the regulator is in the smokebox on the superheater header, but the steam collection point still has to be inside the boiler above the water level somewhere, assume it might be at the highest point in the boiler which would be in the belpair section of the boiler.
Looking forward to the spinoff series 'Off the Rails' and Thomas Spain is Richard Trevithick 😂 Also is would the 'last Cheeseburger' be making an appearance in Off the Rails?
I really like your channel and have watch most, if not all, of your presentations of Curator with a Camera. I just love how Thomas Spain is delightfully nervous at points as he clasps his hands in anticipation of the next question. You too Anthony, you're doing plenty of hand clasping...LOL
There is also a Chaldron Waggon in the Railway Museum in Nuremburg. If you are going to do some episodes on Wagons, then Brake Vans would be a good one to do.
Will you be going into the history of lines that no longer exist? E.g. Broom Junction in Warwickshire; The old lines in Cheltenham. There really isnt much history online these days about it
It would be nice to have a LNER gala at shildon, have scotsman, blue peter, tornado, mallard sng etc itl make a very nice line up in front of the museum on the apron
Now that Henry Oakley has been put on display in the great hall again, do you intend to keep it there for the foreseeable future? I would like to see it to have more steam locos in the NRM. I would also like to enquire if the Station Hall is close to re-opening soon.
Because you have no idea what to do with Scotsman now you could give it a rest and when you guys get more money you could overhaul it again and also repaint it back into its LNER Apple green livery and numbered 4472
Can you tell us about the steam locomotives that where sent out to Nyasaland/ Malawi, I believe there is only two left, and is under threat from being broken up by Chinese business men and shipped back to China, for use as steel.? Thank you
The gauge fits, its 1435 mm. Power-wise it would probably work at 25kV 50Hz. Signalling might not interoperate very well though. So you could "tow" one between UK freight locomotives but I don't think they'd let you run it by itself.
11:34 I didn’t think I would get a cameo! Thomas Spain is definitely Richard Trevithick reborn!
Looking forward to Off the Rails. There are so many odd little bits in the North Hall that I'd love to know the story behind.

nice video! From now, following you and the channel! Happy to see my friend Thomas there!! Was a nice surprise! Regards, Pablo!
I'm out there, Mr. Coulls. Aaaaalways watching.

Now that is a surprise. What are their questions?
That would be great for the Apr 1 episode
Excellent chaps! Looking forward to your new programme. 👍👍👏👏

Off the rails sounds great! Looking forward to it. ❤
Nice 2 Ronnies ref at the end

Yes, apologies I didn't make that clear, steam collection is indeed up in the Belpaire firebox
11:34 Oh, indeed you do, sir…!
Brittomart has a claxon on the ffestiniog, which is fun.
Would you ever display a Blackpool Tram if you could?

Stops us fiddling and waving our hands around distractingly, media training and all that 😂

Yes, the chaldron is on loan from us 😁
i would like to see the lynton and barnstaple coach it's stuck away in a corner there is film footage of the inside

Could you do a video on different braking systems? It could even be a "bonanza"...

hi there, great video, why isn't D200 running ? i seem to remember donating some money when Peter Kelley was in volveld.
Need to cover the Banger Wagons, Palethorps 6 wheelers.😁
Hi I remember you saying Green Arrow is in you're possible steaming list is there any update you can give on this.
Was that a Ronnie Pickering reference at the beginning?
Which pre-grouping British Railway companies used the air brake, on trains, not just on locomotives.
London Brighton and South Coast, the North Eastern and the Great Eastern Railways, from my memory. There may be more.
Are there any items, that are not part of the national collection, that survive at other locations that you feel you would like to do a video on?
Because you have no idea what to do with Scotsman now you could give it a rest and when you guys get more money you could overhaul it again and also repaint it back into its LNER Apple green livery and numbered 4472
I hope you still look after and own The Flying Scotsman
What about the DMUs?
Can you tell us about the steam locomotives that where sent out to Nyasaland/ Malawi, I believe there is only two left, and is under threat from being broken up by Chinese business men and shipped back to China, for use as steel.?
Thank you
When is flying Scotland going to retire

Why are a lot of your locomotives going one by one on to the pit in the great hall?
When are you going to get anuther a4 locomotive in the museum at york and sheeledun
