  • A quick look at the 2023 edition ... Collectors Edition ... of the venerable HP15C. I never uploaded this video originally as I didn't think it was that interesting ...
    Mainly a comparison of the different HP calculator keyboards, including also several Swiss Micros models such as the DM16L.

    I may have to get one, as I gave both of my wonderful HP15C calculators to my kids. I was left with an 11C, 16C, two 41s, two 35s, 21, 65, 67 and some where a 48G. :)

      It's a nice little machine - I just got the programming cable and HP-16C overlay for it. I'll probably do a short video, once I get around to figuring out how to activate the HP-16C mode

    My goodness, two things that leaves me amazed. One, where do you source all your old gear and what size shed do you have to keep it all in? You must fast be approaching the largest collection of vintage computing items in Oz now.

      Ebay is both a blessing and a curse! My wife assures me that if I pass away then she's just going to open the garage door and offer everything for $5 each ... 🫣 ... I do have a concrete slab already poured for an actual shed when we built the house, but can't afford the actual shed yet ... so it's the garage for now.

    The HP-15C CE is a fantastic calculator, far better than the Limited Edition (LE) with its horrible buttons. I thought that the SM 15C was going to be smaller, I was pleasantly surprised! And I like the CE's case (reminds me of the original).
    I think that your DM42 is the only one that I have ever seen without an image on its display. Is it ill? Mine has chosen to display WALL-E at the moment. :)
    I recently bought some DM42 overlays to use with some of the various ROMs available for it. Specifically the C47, WP43, and the DB48X. I got the tabbed overlays since I don't want them on there permanently. And it looks like the guy that I bought them from is from my father's home town. I will be sure to bring that up. :)
    Nice collection that you have there. :)

      Ahh ... it could be that the DM42 is the one that drains the battery - every time I go to use it, the damn battery is dead.

      @@Brfff You haven't changed the ROM for something different which might be draining your battery? That's about the most hopeful thing that I can think of, it gets worse from here. A reset might kill a process that has gone wild I suppose.
      And the "Charging" cable isn't. It's the data cable, which will boost the CPU to 80Mhz (IIRC) while also giving the battery a break. The batteries inside are not rechargeable.
      Still rockin' WALL-E... :)

      @@Brfff I did. I don't own a DM41X, but it is cute. Impactable as heck, but cute. :)

    I Remember around 2005, my Uncle, Late 30's if I remember:
    Was super excited to find one of these on eBay CIB while we were at the Office LOL

    Wonderful collection. It's a credit to you. I generally use the 42s for my daily driver at work but love my 16c and few others I have. Have you looked into the soviet RPN calculators? I have one Mk.52 and several for parts (worth getting some spares for the VFD as they 'go'). Wish I knew how to fix the big black spot that appeared on my 200LX one morning :( Miss using that thing all the time. Great collection! I've lusted after the Swiss Micros devices.. friends have them. I just keep plodding along with the 42s.

      Thanks! I do actually have a bunch of Soviet calculators (and spares, thanks to @MrWaalkman) ... I need to return to them and fiddle with them some more. Looks like I created an MK52 playlist ...

    Collectors! Turn the damn things on! Those of us that actually like using them want to see what the displays look like!

    • @Brfff
      @Brfff  6 місяців тому

      Okay, okay! Didn't I turn it on? Or was it one of the other machines that I was comparing the keyboard with that you want to see running? I do plan to make more videos on them but usually I want to actually "do" something with them, like getting the HP-IL or magnetic strip storage working. If there's a particular machine you're interested in, then I can prioritise that one? For example, I need to finish building the USB HP-IL interface and then try it out with the HP Portable Plus and HP-75 ... /Brett

      @@Brfff Yes, I was a little unfair and some of my frustration came from many other videos were collectors fondle the machine for the entire video and never get around to switching it on! You did switch the CE on at the start, but nothing after that. The CE is the only one I have myself and I was interested in comparing with the others (including the displays). Particularly in comparing the keyboards it needs to be switched on to test function: does each press reliably register once and only once?

    • @Brfff
      @Brfff  6 місяців тому

      I totally understand. I really do wish I could use these machines every day but my job doesn't need anything more taxing than HEX->DEC usually ... so much for all the maths & engineering I studied at university :( There is a Lunar Lander game I've got on the HP-67 ... I wonder if it's possible to port it across to the HP-15 ... ? That might make for an interesting comparison?
