Excellent song. Great baritone. This is one of my favorite songs, and I, too, first heard it by hearing Rudy Wissler singing it as the young Al Jolson in "The Jolson Story". The final stanza is very sad, though---almost ghoulish with the cemetery imagery---and I think the song can do without it. The rest of it has a peaceful, romantic serenity that is very appealing. It is very much a product of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, yet it evokes emotions that are timeless. Thanks for posting!

It's nice to hear the song performed the way it was meant to be performed.

The harmonium drives me mad. It is such a beautiful instrument and doing the accompaniment is is quite an accomplishment. It supports the baritone quite nicely.

All you fans of this song should come to Terre Haute, IN where the brothers Paul Dresser (originally Dreiser, composer of this song) and Theodore grew up. Their house stands at the entrance of Fairbanks Park on the banks of the Wabash River.

Very well done. I first heard "Banks of the Wabash" sung by Rudy Wissler as the young Al Jolson in "The Jolson Story." I used it as a teaching tool when I was studying voice in the 1990s, but I didn't know this song had a second stanza. It adds a plaintive context to it. Interesting to hear a really good baritone do it. Kudos!

Clayton Henderson has written a thoroughly researched biography of Paul Dresser (born Dreiser), entitled "On the Banks of the Wabash." Anyone interested in the story of Dresser's life or the music of that era (roughly 1880-1910) should look it up, and would find it very informative.

I live about 5 miles from the house where Paul Dresser grew up. The city of Terre Haute, IN is doing a river tribute album, and I'm looking over different songs and versions about or with reference to the river, as I've been asked to contribute. Nice take/version here.

John Dos Passos quotes from this song ("Through the sycamores the candle lights are gleaming...") in his novel The 42nd Parallel. Its sentimental appeal is contrasted to the cynical opportunism of the characters.

If Kentucky can sing THEIR state song at the Derby, why can't we sing OUR state song at the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing"?!

Brian Plank Wrong - I have been going to the Indy 500 since 1982 pal... 34 years to be exact... Back home again in Indiana is sung just prior to start engines command, I am talking about when they roll the cars out onto the grid... But if you are so sure all to hell, like you think you are, then all you have to do is look in any indy 500 program - in there is the race day schedule... sorry but if you do as I suggested you will be quickly corrected and then humbled. Gotta love all you UA-cam know it alls...... who don't do their research first...

Paul Dresser changed his name from Dreiser so as to sound less German. His younger brother was Theodore Dreiser, the author of depressing novels. His first novel _Sister Carrie_ which was banned for a while, is said to have been based on the exploits of the Dreiser brothers’ sister, who is portrayed as a slatternly woman.

This song is consummately Indiana. Hoosiers will either be reminded nostalgically of hearth and home, or be reminded of their perpetual and hopeless backwater status. Truth, either way.

Have been a "hopeless backwater" all my life. Proud of it. Indiana is beautiful and it's people are genuine. I will take that any day over snobs from the Northeast and West Coast.
