My first Tull album that I purchased (also around age 13) was War Child. Extremely satisfied with the purchase (although I could do without the "single" Bungle In the Jungle - the music is fine but the lyrics are not up to the usual high standard set by Ian). Songs from the Wood is also one of my favorite Tull albums.

    Musts from this album:
    Hunting Girl
    Velvet Green
    Pibroch
    Beltane
All happy blends of folk and prog(and a wee bit of theatricality, standard with Jethro Tull), with clever/witty lyrics ably sang as the cherry on top.

"Jack-in-the-Green" and "Ring Out Solstice Bells" are the two songs from this album that lift my mood like few other songs do. And "Cup of Wonder" sends me into a trance. Not that I don't love the whole album (which is something I can't say about the wildly more popular "Aqualung"). "Songs from the Wood" has been my favorite Jethro Tull album since I first listened to it, with an honorable close second place for "Stand Up" (which unfortunately is from 1969, so out of Brandon's range for reactions, but I do recommend a private listen because it's a succession of masterpieces, including but not limited to their legendary rendition of J. S. Bach's "Bourrée").

Ah, Tull! Songs from the Wood might be their best album for me, and there isn't a bad moment on it. That was their folk rock era, and it encapsulates a certain kind of English whimsy that you also hear in music from the Canterbury scene (Caravan, Gong, Matching Mole etc etc). Thanks! 🙃

The lyrics are so knowledgeable of predominately old english traditions and a large smattering of dare i say it..."Paganism "......mentions of the Greenman,Jack Frost......and of course velvet green......its almost an environmentalists bible......love it.

      * the first cut called "Autumn: Heroine's Theme/Deep Summer's Sleep/The Winter Long" which is 8:30 minutes long
      * "Hero and Heroine" plus "Midnight Sun" (both tracks are blended together on the album) About 6:30 total for both.

JETHRO TULL, folk prog rock with Celtic accents and the very particular vocal style of the wonderful dancing crazy Ian Anderson, multi-instrumentalist and genius composer. My favorite album: 'Thick As A Brick' (1972).
Anecdote about this prestigious prog rock band: Its creativity was largely responsible for the glory of another group, rock in this case. Which? EAGLES. It would take a long time to tell the whole story; perhaps it is better to invite you to listen first to "We Use To Know" (JT, 1969) and then to "Hotel California" (E, 1977). The first offers a pianistic opening played in rhythm and the second, an arpeggio guitar intro. Don't you hear the almost perfect similarity? Plagiarism or not? Your turn to judge. Ian Anderson, as a noble English lord, has never taken public offense at this resemblance, which is, to say the least, suspicious; even saying that the recovery made by the EAGLES deserved praise.
The EAGLES have never recognized this recovery... even if we know that at the very beginning of their career, this group had the chance to be chosen by JETHRO TULL to open for its concerts and that on the occasion of these, Don Henley was always present in the room or backstage when Ian Anderson played this overture.
Following the release of "Hotel California", the EAGLES went from a completely unknown band to a leading rock band. The song became cult and the group, on the way to legend.
    Thanks.

    • @PogueMahone1
      @PogueMahone1 5 місяців тому +1

Ian is NOT a "noble English lord" -- a "newly rich British gentleman of arguably noble character" would be more accurate.
He certainly didn't start out wealthy -- he worked hard for years for his money.
The redoubtable Mr. Anderson holds no title of peerage and hasn't (yet) been knighted, but he has been awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) -- a title of chivalry that is the nation's highest civilian honor.
