- The entire final quarter of the 1984 Victorian Football League (VFL) Grand Final, which was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday 29th September, 1984, between the Hawthorn Football Club (The Hawks) and the Essendon Football Club (The Bombers). The 88th VFL Grand Final saw an official attendance of 92,685 spectators. The commentators for this Grand Final were Peter Landy, Lou Richards, Bob Skilton, and Stephen Phillips. The legendary Allan Jeans was Hawthorn's coach, and the legendary Kevin Sheedy was Essendon's coach.
The final score saw Essendon defeat Hawthorn by 24 points, handing Essendon its 13th Premiership.
Recorded on VHS from the broadcast of the 2001 AFL Grand Final Marathon, September 29, 2001, on the Seven Network (HSV-7).
Vaxfacts: The 1984 Grand Final was a rematch of the 1983 Grand Final, with Hawthorn having defeated Essendon by 83 points.
From 1967-1983 (17 seasons), only four teams had won Premierships between them- Hawthorn, Richmond, Carlton and North Melbourne. Essendon's victory ended this streak.
The attendance of 92,685 was one of the lowest attendances at the MCG for that time- with over 100,000 seat capacity, cold weather and a hailstorm the previous night discouraged many from attending.

From the saddest footy day (grand final 1983) to this triumph!
PAUL WESTON! What a last quarter performance.
Spot on mate. I have watched him play for Glenelg and he was a workhorse but his efforts on this day were incredible
@@ben2976
He was a hugely important part of the Sheedy jigsaw....so reliable and consistent.
@JG-bw6lu mate,.STOP WANKING YOURSELF.Everyone knows soccer is SHHHHIIIIITT.
Sheads. Masterstroke
Eades kick is not a good one it's a bad one. a piece of commentary that always stuck in my mind for some reason
Lowest grandfinal crowd since 1957. With a minnow club like Hawthorne in the game, no wonder.
Matthew Vicendese There has been a hailstorm the night before, along with accompanying cold weather, which contributed to depressed numbers!
@@Vaxman80 .. grandfinal numbers were down all through the 80s. Hawthorn has since grown it's membership base thoigh ... through canabalising sons of Melbourne supporters
Matthew Vicendese 110,000 went the previous year so that blows your theory away. Here’s the reasons why it was lower than usual. ‘The attendance of 92,685 was the smallest at an MCG grand final for 29 years. The match was the first grand final played in the aftermath of the off-field dispute between the League, which wanted to stage the grand final at VFL Park, and the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Cain state government, which wanted to stage the grand final at the MCG. Under the terms agreed to in early 1984, an area in the Members' and Olympic Stands was set aside for 44,000 MCC and VFL Park members, but only 31,000 attended, leaving a large vacant area at the top of the Olympic Stand. Uncertainty about the new arrangements, accusations that the demand for members tickets had been overestimated, and breezy and cool conditions in the wake of a heavy overnight hailstorm were all considered to have discouraged many spectators from attending.’ From Wikipedia but nonetheless accurate.

When you think about it it wasn't really that impressive. 23 points is nothing
sliat1981 its 24 points and a win is a win
A 9 goal quarter... so 54 points minimum not including behinds. Yeah not that impressive.
Yeah after 83 smashing, and last prmiship 65 you you would think Hawks would win again, but 23 points for Essendon supports was a big margin
Biggest ever 3 quarter time deficit to come back and claim the premiership in VFL/AFL history.....
What I’m saying is you see those point being overcome all the time in regular games
"Is that a mark to Essendon? Or a Hawthorn mark?" Landy hilariously hopes at 21:26 , as Roger Merrett stands alone holding the ball over his head. Landy had a shocker the last quarter, clearly cracking the shits because Hawthorn were losing.
One of my favourite GF's (from a Richmond supporter). Peter Landy getting all stroppy in the commentary box. The crowd reaction when Baker put Essendon in front (he had a pretty handy two weeks coming off 6 in the prelim). Hard to believe that champion Hawthorn team fell in such a hole.
We'd been to nearly every Dons match for the three previous seasons. We were getting closer with every game to them and had high hopes after the second-semi. Had tickets to the GF the previous season and went to the Cox Plate instead of witnessing the mauling but couldn't get tickets to this....we were jumping up the living room walls by the end....
"Hawthorn in Complete disarray"
Dipper; what a thug
Quite probably the happiest 35 minutes of my life. What a day it was.
Leons blind turn could be favourite goal in 45 years of watching footy...
There was some excellent play going on there, they looked unbeatable.
Iconic.
Yeah, deserves to be on the GF history highlights reel.
“This premiership is Sheedy’s premiership with his tremendous moves Bob!” ..said Lou. That commentary stuck in my mind ...
We've been shit since Sheedy left. Sad
The way they played in the prelim against Collingwood, they were never going to lose this. I heard an interview with Leon Baker years later. His record in Grand Finals is ridiculous playing in winning GF teams in 80, 82, 83, 84, 85 and then when he finished at Essendon went back to the bush and played in winning GF teams in local sides.
September 29 1984
Essendon 14 21 105
Hawthorn 12 9 81
Hawks fans that think they have never choked need to watch this
I'll be sure to bring this up whenever they feel like talking about 2008
@@pizzaparker9464 also tell em they lost 2012 from bad kicking
I remember this game well. ESPN at 3am after work with pizza and beer! Awesome!
What a great quarter of footy by that great Essendon team.
Always loved the Bombers trainer goin off at Dipper after Walsh got knocked out.
(WCE fan)

Thankyou for the upload
7:41 and 33:155 classic goals in my opinion
great to watch this in 2018 bring
on 2019 is don is good go dons
Timmy......
Peter Landy had a shocker; Lou Richards was amazing.
Peter Landy is still a better commentator than some of the ones you hear nowadays
Landy's a Hawthorn fan so he was being pessimistic throughout the call.
Be careful what people say about the great Peter Landy
Was dipper suspended for the clash with walsh
Believe it or not I think he got off, but I stand to be corrected.
I can't quite remember either but l thought he was suspended for that.
They rarely suspended players for reportable incidents in grand finals until it was pointed out the grand final was the games showcase.Ironicly, the league decided to get tough in 1990 and Terry D was the first victim of the policy change. His punishment was so severe, it virtually finished his career.
Worth 6 weeks these days
The dipper/walsh clash was accidental in my book no need for the umpire to report dipper
Atmosphere and the football was way better TOUGH miss them days!
13:23 How is that sport? Going for the man and not ball.
what a last qtr, and i was there!!!!
Sheedy made the moves In that last quarter and it paid of. Bradbury to the Forward line was Brilliant.
