You literally started talking about boosting when you were talking about cutting? Are you saying people shouldn't cut at all? Not good advice. Yes boosts in mastering should be broad but the cuts SHOULD be narrow like that.

Yes, and always adjust the threshold so that the EQ only responds when a resonant frequency appears.

What about removing all those "pain" frequencies?
I would suggest that you go back to your mix instead and remove such frequencies from the instrument(s) causing it.
