Great video! I got my girl from joey about 2 weeks ago, and she was out and eating after day 2 of her arrival :) she's still scared shitless of me, but I noticed she's much more curious of me if I'm laying down on the floor when she's exploring vs when I'm sitting up or standing. I've only picked her up once, I've pretty much left how we interact in her hands and it seems to be helping. She let me pet her, pretty much everywhere and pancaked when I did so, my heart nearly blew out of my chest I was so happy haha. I did notice a few things about her behavior though, namely when she didn't want to be messed with: 1. Breathing really hard 2. Arching her back 3. Tail wiggle When I go in to touch her I make sure she can see my hands and I come in slowly from below not overhead, she seems to respond well to this. On the food note I REALLY recommend Reptilinks, especially if you've never had a tegu before- it takes all the thought out of feeding them so you can focus on taming and not have to worry about feeding them something wrong. Plus my gu loves them!
I remember when my boy was tiny I would have him tucked in a pocket and rest my hand on him. When he grew out of that pocket he went into sweat pockets and after that it was hoodie pockets then just under the hoodie to under the covers xD. I would put the clothing I wore in the enclosure with him at night and from day one would do periodic interactions throughout the day. Never grabbing him, but more scooping him up. It took a week to safely interact away from the enclosure, but when I gained his trust I knew it. Tegus are amazing animals each one is different. I didn't really experience tegu puberty, but I did get to experience an intense feeding response (he's gotten better since but still). He is 2 now and all I have to say to new tegu parents is be prepared. Our boy is SMART he has learned to push out the class to his own enclosure and slide open the glass/jam it by purposely kicking dirt in the track to make it easier to push it out. I suggest swinging glass doors with a good lock...sliding might not keep them in if they learn how it work...unfortunately that's something my boy learned ^^; now he gets out and crawls in our bed on his own randomly 😅 they are amazing animals that deserve much respect and what you put into them is what you will get back.
Believe it or not, when I purchase My first tegu I saw your videos and feel ready to breading with your advices about food, how yo handle and you're right they are awsome reptiles when You put a little bit of effort to gain theie trust
I just realized they look just like scaled up whiptail lizards to me, not just that they are lizards it the face they both got. I didn't even realize whiptails/Teiids were all related.
I mean according to Clint from Clints reptiles Whiptails are in the teiid family and tegus are just giant whip tails.^^ There are also micro teiids that are incredibly small it's all so fascinating how it's all related, but look at monitors and they too have their micro as well as macro versions ^^
Question for you since you have, by far, been my most watched channel for Tegu information. I recently adopted the reptile of my dreams; a black and white Argentine. Absolutely beautiful. She's 3 years old roughly, I haven't been able to get a weight on her, but I'd estimate 5 - 6 pounds, and about 2 1/2 ft from nose to tail tip (I'm not trying to step on any toes since she's a newer addition). Her home previous to mine was pretty good, but lacked interaction and socialization. He got her around 1 yr. The home before appeared to not be so great. I fully intend on being her *final* home no matter what. There isn't a whole lot online in terms of Tegu behaviors; what tells they have when they're annoyed or upset. Mine seems to almost heavy sigh and huff if I interact with her at certain times. I've determined this is maybe be a hiss? But she's never once snapped at me. All things considered, she's been a star. She's got a great big enclosure with as close to perfect husbandry as I could create without natures assistance. My question to you is, will Tegus generally become friendlier as they receive more socialization and rewards? For example, when she is out with me and allows me to stroke her head or back and shows signs of relaxation, I'll give her a pinky mouse, or a piece of turkey (in her bowl, not by hand). She has allowed me to touch and soak certain parts of her body that are suffering from stuck shed (primarily the tail tip) and never once has made any motions that indicate annoyance. They're just so intelligent I cant imagine they wouldnt adapt, but I could be wrong. I took it from you; you said you'll never be fully ready for a tegu until you have one. So I'm doing what I can, but still have so many questions. Oh, and we try your tegu meal recipe tomorrow; all the fixings made into a perfect sausage link! Hoping it's a hit! If anyone has any advice, please, as a new tegu owner, info is appreciated always ❤️
Hi there from germany! I got my little bw girl via a german shop wich imported here from Argentina. When i got here, i instantly started to handle here a lot - when she arrived she was cold, so i just tugged here under my T-Shirt. I kept doing that the last two month, wich resulted in building a lot of trust. I often kept here under my cloth or even slept with here in bed (in the beginning i was afraid to crush here but she most of the time dug under me anyway, allways staying on my warm body or close to it under the blanket.) She eats good and did a good amount of growing and shedding. Since its december now and my flat (and here enclosure) are between 65 - 70°F i noticed here to refusing to eat so ill let here brumate now. After that ill give here a stronger basking spot and plan to keep here semi open in my whole flat. I also got a balcony with grass on it but im not sure on how to secure that so she doesnt jups down :D
Do you still feed the tegus if it's been raining for 3 days or more in a row without that basking spot are the still able to digest there food? this question is meant for babies and adults
2 questions, I have a columbian tegu, and i have a schedule for feeding him and whatnot, but summer is almost over and i have to make a big routine change, so how could i get my columbian used to a new schedule? And also, should I get him up earlier in the day, or later? Thanks.
I've been wondering....is there a Tegu that you treat more as a pet? One that you're, maybe more affectionate towards, take it in to run around with you....
My relationship with all of them is different, and has definetly changed as the collection grew. If I had to pick one I was closest with I would say Payload. I have had him from the start and he has always been my buddy. Before covid I did many presentations for 5th graders and he is who I always brought with me.
I think I've just figured out that Wicca doesn't like dirt! She wants her towel to curl up in and will get on her elevated items in her enclosure more than she will be on or in the dirt!
Every time I try to put my hands near my baby tegu to start to work with him, he bites me lol. He breathes really hard so I know he is afraid so I try to go slow but no matter what I do he constantly bites me??

Thank you for this comment, great derail and information! Glad that yall are making progress!
Who saw Penny take my microphone in the last feeding clip?
Knew tegu owner recently bought one from Rose City Reptiles and those answered helped out a lot took a lot of worry away lol
Thats great! This is why we made the video!
The taking the picture of the food trick did wonders for my worrying about eating!
Glad I'm not alone haha 😅
