Summary:
By the time Lynyrd Skynyrd played this sold-out show at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom, they had become the unmistakable kings of Southern Rock. Spearheaded by charismatic frontman, Ronnie Van Zant, the group had taken southern boogie from the swamps and brought it to the masses.
There is an enormous amount of energy and power in the multiple guitar mix of the band, and that is clearly apparent when they launch into solos on these songs. The group had built a solid following via AOR radio by 1975, and songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" had given the band enormous crossover appeal. The group was coming off two hugely successful albums, its debut (pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd) and 1974's Second Helping, and they had recently replaced original drummer Bob Burns with Artimus Pyle.
This show was recorded during the band's tour promoting their 1975 album, Nuthin' Fancy, and it features Lynyrd Skynyrd at the top of their game. It was also one of the last shows featuring their original three-guitar lineup, as Ed King left the band midway through the tour. Skynyrd confidently played its brand of riff-driving Southern fried rock boogie to near capacity crowds on this entire '75 tour.
Poignant songs like "The Needle And The Spoon" are balanced against established Skynyrd rockers such as "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimmie Three Steps." Songs like "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze", and "Sweet Home Alabama" are played here in their early forms-many of these classics would re-emerge as part of the must-do repertoire of so many country artists.
The band ends the show with a predictable but crowd-pleasing, version of its radio anthem, "Free Bird." Sadly, the band would change drastically when some of its members, including lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, would die in a plane crash two years after this show was recorded.
What kind of knot head would put an ad in the middle of this masterpiece
Best part is when Allen is shredding and talking to Gary at the same time. Legendary.
Alex Morrison nice profile pic Honda is a great motorcycle company love them
Dude fr I luv how Allen would just talk while absolutely shredding! 😆
Ed king at 3 minutes is probably one of my favourite guitar pieces ever.
Mine too two guitars playing the lead is way impresive!
@2:59 😁
Dude the part Allen Collins plays is the best ❤❤
@@shaunaklonandkar9226 it's amazing but not my favourite guitar piece
Same!
love how all 3 guitars get a solo part love this version
3 playing lead ? I always thought it was 2 and a rythem guitar . Still mind blowing solo ai have not heard an equaL to it.
Gary slide solo, Ed king has one in the middle and Allen well you know
@@mkaz4232 In the middle of Allen's solo Ed joins in
Isn’t it like that with every song they do? They all get to shine, baby!!
They were so great even before Steve Gains came on. Thanks to Ed King before he left. there is no such thing as too much of the original Skynyrd!
Hell yeah honey
Sick Solo by Ed King on 2:57
Allen frikkin Collins on his Gibson frikkin Firebird. Very underrated guitar player!
Allen Collins is awesome.
Collin made this song come alive with one of the most iconic guitar solos ever
Damn is Ed King tearing it up on the last 2 minutes or what!!
Yes sir, Ed MAKES this version by recreating Billy's piano parts on the guitar so RVZ wouldn't get lost.
Yes, the forgotten man. Allan Collins and Gary Rossington get most of the credit because they stuck around longer. King was an original member but was kind of the outlier having come from Strawberry Alarm Clock (SAC). Most people know and listen to the version(s) with Steve Gains taking the 3rd guitar. Wow, what a great tune !
@@rickmartucci5642 Ed wasn't original member, he came on bass when Leon got cold feet & briefly left, they talked Leon into coming back, told Ed he was terrible bass player & moved him to guitar. He is original of the 3 guitar army if that's what you meant. He was a great guitar player & had totally different sound than Steve. They were all 4 very gifted, very different guitar players. There was never a weak link in that band, I love them all in various ways, even in btwn Ed & Steve they sounding amazing, that triple guitar attack but Gary & Allen still managed to fill in but they needed Steve, he brought new life to them. Such a tragedy to this day.
Ed king the original other than “that smell” and “you got that right” there’s no other song Ed has hands on
@@rickmartucci5642 SAC?
Awesome solo by Collins. Ed King is easily the most underrated guys ever. Excellent again Ed.
Best guitar solo ever n Allen Collins is the best guitar player ever. Thank god for lynyrd skynyrd and Allen Collins n freebird guitar solo by Allen Collins n rest of the band ❤❤❤
Ya Ed king n Allen Collins are always the best guitarists ever ❤❤❤
My favorite live version is Knebworth by far. Part of Rolling Stones show that had a runway going out front to look like a tongue & they were told not to go there. So of course they did.
You got Billy's bad ass piano beginning, the quality much better, Steve Gaines, although I loved Ed King was a game changer for the blade. He took them up another notch. The energy is off the charts, Ronnie leads Gary & Allen out on the tongue while they are playing mind you, then Steve comes over & even Leon gets in in it.
The best live performance of any band ever IMO.
Many people that were there say they outplayed the Stones by far.
Man I still miss these guys, when I get to Heaven I expect them to be up there playing still finding ways to make it better.
A damn Reeces commercial right when Ed started playing. Thanks 'YOUSCREW'
I love so many amazing wonderful badass guitar players. But Allen Collins, Gary Rossington and Ed King are three of the greatest most underappreciated guitarists ever. Allen Collins is my boy and Gary and Ed and Steve. I love this band love all of these men dearly. No doubt one of the greatest bands to ever grace planet Earth.
Saw them on Saturday. Johnny sang the first verse and then they played this video of Ronnie singing the second verse while they played the instruments live
Ed King hits it out of the park......
Allen Collins was my favorite guitarist in the band, however, could you imagine the amount of fuckin pure ecstasy it would have been with FOUR guitarists? We could only wish......RIP fellas! I miss you all still to this day.
I couldn’t even imagine them with Gary, Allen, Ed, and Steve all together. Pure beauty Id say
They all blend so perfectly...musicians or magicians?? Haha
Both 😂
Genius rednecks
I remember this concert at Winterland. It was a mind blower guitar solo with them trading riffs that took everybody to a great place. Very memorable concert. I put it right up there with seeing the stones there in 72.
The best
Lozano
Uff
Ed king is a great guitarist
123Tymathis 😢
This is might just be my favorite live version of Free Bird.
Greatness = you've heard it a thousand times and it still gives you goosebumps
Thanks to all for Freebird and your other great tunes.
One of my favorite songs, thanks for this 3 guitar's solo 🤔😋, my favorite in fact 🤗🤗🤗
If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now
Cause there's too many places I've got to see
But, if I stayed here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you can not change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And this bird you can not change
And this bird you can not change
Lord knows, I can't change
Bye, bye, baby, it's been a sweet love
Though this feeling I can't change
But please don't take it so badly
Cause Lord knows I'm to blame
But, if I stayed here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you'll never change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And this bird you can not change
And this bird you can not change
Lord knows, I can't change
Lord help me, I can't change
Lord, I can't change
Won't you fly high, free bird, yeah
Allen Collins though...Whew! My favorite version
Whoever filmed this is a fucking genius
5 days after I joined the Army. When they did this concert I was off at Ft Puke, Lousyana. But I did get to see them at the Denver Coliseum about 3 weeks earlier with Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen and the James Gang.
Can you say eargasm?? One mo' time!!
Best performance by anyone hands down ❤ the guitars singers piano and that drummer. Nobody plays as good as these guys .
RIP Gary!🕊

Outstanding, Allen and Ed, wow!!!
its a true electric guitar
Such amazing talent ! The chemistry, exchanging guitar solos and feeding the energy off of each other.
Allen my favorite but Rossington gave then their signature sound. Ed very underrated and the most skilled
Two words... no, not Free Bird. Kick ass!!! Man, those 3 guitars were like no other. RIP LS.
Very good version !! I love iT !!!
Ed King is an absolute GOD
My ears came!😎🤘🤤😂
TURN IT UP!!!!!
Awesome Alan and his 🔥 ball solo.
Allan is like the only one following structure, Ed is grooving out.
What do you mean by that?
@@shaunaklonandkar9226 allen is staying original to the song and ed king is not he's "grooving out"
@@Guitarplayerotherchannel oh cool thanks for letting me know. N ya that’s true. Allen Collins is the best guitarist ever n his freebird guitar solo is the best guitar solo ever n lynyrd skynyrd is the best band ever. No one is better than lynyrd skynyrd
@@Guitarplayerotherchannel by the way did you know this full freebird guitar solo is composed by Allen Collins himself?
That's because they are all stoned out of their f****** minds
Them boys got downnnn, son!!

The American Stairway to Heaven.
Better than stairway to heaven and any other song. This is the best song ever n Allen Collins is the best guitarist ever ❤
@@shaunaklonandkar9226agreed
For the guitar nerds like me out there, without billy's piano in this version, you can really hear Gary's drone sound with the slide a few times in the slide parts. This was because the B string is tuned to G so there's two G strings in unison. Gives it a wobbly sound as Gary says.
Its not a B string tuned to G, Gary actually had 2 G strings
@@gewdferyew4844 and piece of wire to raise the string a bit
Rapturous!
Hard to believe that everyone in this video aside from the drummer is dead and many of them have been dead for a very long time
Oh god, to see Lynard's LIVE in this time...2017
i saw them at the Capitol Centre with Marshall tucker band in 75 !!!! I feel so blessed!!!!! who would have known the future!!! Only God!!!!
never seen them. too young,,,:-)
no...only the PILOT
I am so lucky I was at this show. I am 65 and was privileged to have lived in the Bay Area in the 70's and got to my favorite band 8 times from 74 to 77. So blessed but also feel lucky to has seen them back in the late 80's and last year. I have tickets in San Diego this May can't wait.. Turn it Up!
Yes we need that. I did see them live at TX stadium in Dallas in '74 or '75 (we were smokin grass so the year is fuzzy). But they were phenomenal and I remember it well to this day. And I am so thankful that I got to see them intact, Ronnie and Ed King and all. Marvelous show and we were down center. Yes!
Dallas Coliseum went into launch mode and I drank a 5th of Jack and passed out a bag of gods own cure for medicinal purposes yee haww man .
Sound man late on the start of Allen's solo
William this song prop your making hearing it out of your donor he looked and sound great but never mind him the production was my hero you my Dear loving missed son .Today is your Uncle Ricky's Birthday he's been with you now Thirteen years he would been 74 Years .I know you are all with me always like God Almighty Jesus Christ .Thank you my Hero .
When they put lyrics into a guitar solo.
It was just 2 🎸 then!!!!
Some comments are saying Ed was bad? Huh? Contrary! He was the best they had, even Ronnie thought so until their later differences that were fueled by over-drugging. And then Steve Gaines came along and made it just as good if not better, but Ed didn't do bad by far. Ronnie and him wrote together and came up with Sweet Home together.... Ed was good and played better than anyone they'd yet had.
Kitty Omine exactly, only thing holding Ed back is that he is miserable
And don’t forget that Ed and Gary carried the reunion tour in the late 1980’s
Agreed 100%
Really immediately after it starts you play a fucking ad!!!!!!!
F¥¢€¿£G BRILLIANT!!
where’s billy
billy is replaced to Edking. So like the Piano is replace with Ed kings guitar.
@@lifted.5916 i know
Billy was there before Ed King I think.
I almost fell asleep
Fuck you
Saw them at Oakland when I was sixteen and it was more than great. Wish I saw this though I love this version. I got to see a few Winterland venues a few years later when I got older. What a great venue.
If I leave here tomorrow..
Would you still remember me
Man, it's just not the same without the piano.
where was Billy Powell
Hendrix who??
There. I said it
RIP ALLEN COLLINS
This was bout the time Ed quit the band and just walked out on em during a tour
Tiny Tim could belt outa tune now
No affense to Rickey Medlocke but Allen Collins is way better at the solo
Yeah because he wrote it
why no piano here?
This was before the piano was added.
Piano player hurt his hand
plays trade Sparky for Ed King back please
Ed is dead he died this year in August because of lung cancer
And may he rip, true legend...
is there a better version, eh
yes I'm a chosen
rookie's
I don't think Allen or Ronnie were very happy with Ed after this
Why's that? Cause he left?
+Dagger 323 It seemed that he was trying to compete with Allen in his solo. That solo was supposed to be totally his. However, I did like Ed's little solo during the instrumental between verses.
+Josh “Skynyrd” Sheets Ed always did that, to replicate Allen's double lead he had recorded in the studio version. Steve Gaines did this as well when he entered the band.
Josh Sheets Dagger 323 is correct - there was no competition in the Freebird solo. It was all planned out ahead of time by Allen and Ed to try and replicate the studio version which was actually double-tracked by Allen himself.
big fan of allen!

Where’s Billy Powell
From I remember Ronnie punched Billy the night before in the teeth and Billy missed this gig.
Gary Rossington is so hot........
Melissa Lee im a guy and i can tell that
And born to play the 6 string

Лучший вариант этой песни. ..соло и кода далеко вперёд того времени ушли. Жаль, что погибли.
As fantastic as Billy Powell was, I kinda dig this bluesy intro.

Billy Powell was injured in a fight. With his own band. This is why he's absent here.
