As early as 1098, long before today's fortress was built, a fortified complex called "Annot" or "Unot" stood on the same site. It was owned by a nobleman, presumably a bailiff, and was dragged down in 1561.
Today's Munot was built between 1564 and 1589 under the direction of master builder Heinrich Schwarz, partly also in slavery. With its keep, it is one of the few examples of the transition from a castle to a modern fortress. The Munot was also part of the city fortification of Schaffhausen. The construction costs amounted to 47'528 guilders. At that time about 800 town houses could be built for this money.
Around 1646, during the Thirty Years' War, it was planned to build additional entrenchments and a fortification. But the calculated costs of 165'627 guilders could be saved, because in 1648 the peace was declared in Münster.
On 1 October 1798 the city and the Munot were occupied by the French. An ammunition depot was built and the Munot was equipped with canons.
On 13 April 1799 the Austrians positioned 6000 men near Herblingen and Büsingen as well as guns near Buchthalen on the Windegg. After an ultimatum had elapsed for the handing over of the town and fortress, bombardment began in the afternoon. The Munot crew fought back as hard as they could. When the town was taken in the early evening, they threw their guns into the ditch. Persecution was made impossible by the fire of the Grubenmann Bridge.
The bombardment had severely damaged the fortress and it lost all meaning. In 1804, the town council approved the removal of the sandstone slabs from the pinnacle and rainwater penetrated the vaults. The walls now served as a quarry for the growing town of Schaffhausen.
From 1826 to 1839 the Munot was restored and saved from collapse. On 30 October 1839 a large inauguration celebration, the the Munot party, took place. On the same day the Munotverein was founded.
Today the fortress serves as a municipal venue and cultural centre.

Herzlichen Dank! Die Schweiz würde Dir bestimmt gefallen. Burgen und Befestigungsanlagen haben immerhin laut Burgenverein Schweiz etwa 4400. Ausserdem viel schöne Natur.
