- The Battle of Liberty Place occurred on September 14, 1874, in New Orleans, Louisiana. This confrontation was an attempted insurrection by a paramilitary organization composed mainly of Confederate veterans, against the Reconstruction Era Republican state government. The conflict arose from the disputed results of the 1872 gubernatorial election, where both Democratic and Republican candidates claimed victory amid widespread allegations of electoral fraud.
On that day, approximately 5,000 members of the insurrection engaged in battle with around 3,500 Metropolitan Police and state militia forces. However, their control lasted only three days before federal troops were dispatched by President Ulysses S. Grant to restore order and reinstate the Republican governor.
The battle resulted in at least 32 fatalities, including both police officers and insurrectionists. Despite their initial victory, no members of the insurrection faced prosecution for their actions.
