Hello Friends! My trip to Chicago highlighted that I do not really own many costume, or even cottage core, pieces that are what I would deem as mid-range. Things I can wear with and without a corset and largely to more casual events where full kit is overkill. I would also like to have a couple of things that straddle the line between regular wardrobe and costume appropriate, so I decided to start my journey toward this goal with this lovely Fan Tail Walking Skirt from Black Snail Patterns. These skirts were popular during the 1890's and early 1900's and are right in my sweet spot for clothes I can really use. I augmented this pattern with my own hem treatment as well as larger and more sturdy pockets, which I think will really come in handy. I do hope you enjoy this process!

Tarlatan is also used in printmaking. After an etching or engraving is inked, the printing plate is wiped with a ball of smushed up tarlatan to remove extra ink.
Yeah that’s the whole “bookbinding” part of it too. People who are printing their own books do the same.

I love wearing my walking skirts with t-shirts/tank tops! I do recommend wearing a bum pad and at least one petticoat, they make all the difference. Hilariously I was wearing my walking skirt that I also made out of fabric from Millend today! Enjoy the swish! 💜

@@Costuming_Drama Well the easy way is to take the skirt pattern and make it out of stiff muslin, gather the back (instead of pleating it), and stick a ruffle on it. 😄 Otherwise, I'm also in the market for a petticoat pattern from a different company.
I think that skirt pattern is a bit much to also make a petti from… but maybe another skirt pattern!
Hi Noelle! I have just binge-watched about 80% of all the videos you’ve uploaded here; I thought I would wait until I had caught up to introduce myself formally! I’ve commented on some of the videos (thank you for your responses). I’m Pippa, living on the edge of the beautiful New Forest in southern England. I became a great-grandmother last year and haven’t sewn anything (apart from repairs) for a few decades. I used to sew quite a lot, but the only thing I have sewn from a pattern was my first wedding dress. I had never heard of mockups back then, but I did know to check the pattern measurements against my own before cutting and sewing, and all went just fine. Other things I’ve made I tended to self-drape, safety-pin, cross fingers and wing it 😂 My mother and both grandmothers were notable needlewomen; my mother and a friend had their own dress designer business until they fell out with each other. Either I have been phenomenally lucky or sewing skills are inherited, as all my wing-it projects came out good! You and a few other select costubers have inspired me to start sewing again (thank you so much!); I will start with Victorian underwear and then gradually replace my wardrobe when thins wear out rather than buying new. My favourite era is later Victorian / early Edwardian for fashion, with mediaeval coming a close second. I’m quite happy to wear Victorian clothes! (I’m a bit eccentric). I find wearing a corset helps reduce back pain, so a properly fitted corset is on the to-do-soon list. I’ve loved watching your videos, will continue to do so, and have subscribed. I wish you all the best.

I’ve been watching your videos as I knit for the past few months. Today I was knitting a hat which will eventually be donated to a charity bazaar. I started on a new sweater recently- I splurged on some really expensive yarn for it- and then my new fancier yarn winder basically wrecked one of the skeins. I may have had a minor breakdown over it yesterday. Replacing small batch hand dyed yarn is compicated in addition to being expensive.
I’m feeling better today but also knitting hats for strangers while I decide how to go forward. Knitting hats for strangers is very soothing since you don’t have to care about correct gage or personally know anyone who would wear it. Also the very nice ladies who run this event are all 80 years old and they will price these hats at 5 dollars, so I feel no guilt over mistakes that don’t effect the utility of the hat.
Anyway your video was ALSO a soothing end to my evening. Otherwise I’ve been re-listening to The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher which I recommend if you like creepy but non gory horror with a snarky heroine and her dog. (Nothing bad happens to the dog) Judging by your enjoyment of Jim Butcher I think you probably would enjoy it. Actually a big recommendation for T. Kingfisher all around, her fantasy/romance Saint of Steel series is also excellent.

I've watched probably thousands of sewing videos and none of them mention the thread issue. No, I had to learn after tons of top stitching on a button up shirt. I was so stoked that I had found the EXACT same shade of green as my fabric. I'm literally embroidering vines and leaves all over my top stitching because the lighter green stitching stabs me in the eyes with how horrible it looks.

So, the moral of today's video is read all of the instructions first, then do what makes sense to you. That's pretty much how I handle knitting patterns at this point, so I get it.
I've made a decent start on my long-term project to knit cardigans and hats for all of my cousins' kids. I'm nearly done with the first one, just have a sleeve and a half left, plus the matching hat. I do appreciate how fast it is to make something for a 2 year old, and hope all the others go as quickly.

This skirt turned out so cute! I just finished up an Eton Jacket (Truly Victorian pattern) that I slightly altered to match one I found in the July 1893 edit of the Delineator 🥰 It has an extra collar that is pleated right over the shoulders 😇
I apologize, I doubted, I wavered about the color choice of the lining. By the last 12 minutes of the video, I regained my confidence regarding the choice. Seriously though, as a novice sewer I come for hints (such thread on a spool is a bit darker than the single thread) and encouragement. The silhouette of the skirt and the "swish" movement is so elegant! Oh and excellent pocket adjustments.

Lovely make Noelle. I was worried the whole time that the hem would be wonky. I have never hemmed a skirt before sewing. I think you are more careful prepping your fabric than I am. Noted and logged! I am doing only a tiny bit of hand piecing on my Patchwork of the Crosses blocks because I am vacationing at the Aulani on Oahu. A tiny slice of heaven where total relaxation is actually possible!! This video has SO MANY GOOD TIPS im going to start using. Like the list... like keeping track of hooks and eyes... like just cutting stuff out thr easiest way possible and then trimming it.

The skirt looks great. Are you thinking about making a waist coat in the same material? With the plaid it can go with a plethora on different colours! It’s also as you said nice to have something you can wear casually.

Paint the kitchen and the cabinets (that have been prepped for months)
Finish up rehabbing the Waterfall Wardrobe
Clean and do the cosmetic work cabinet portion of the 1910 Singer I just got and then make a list of parts needed to get it working.

Sewing cabinet cleaned out (I now have a ton of old buttons and I think there might have been a hook and eye panel from a girdle in there but it was covered in rat poop... and yeah)

Love a fantail. Love plaid. Love a plaid fantail. I need to add a ruffle to four house dresses, and that will be done. And I am now having to proceed carefully. I have several bits of yardage to put away, and if I do it wrong, it will explode, and I will have bins of fabric strewn everywhere because I know that every bin has the same problem -- small bundles of yardage that need to live together elsewhere. I am listening to Blake Shelton, 😤odd, I know. I'm a rock and roll girl, but he calms me when I'm frazzled and on a deadline.

Hi Noelle! I (sort of) made this skirt for the Chicago tea, but so last minute that I didn’t attach placket or make the bum pad…so I definitely need to finish it properly, your skirt is lovely! FYI, I’m a printmaker and use tarletan to wipe ink from my etching plates, it’s something you can find pretty cheaply at good art stores….
Oh yeah, that’s why I buy it from a book binder, same use. It is extremely cheap through them as well, but I don’t have to drive 45 minutes to my closest specialty art store!

I always love a hood practical garment. Yours is lovely! I'm knee deep in a wedding dress, two flower girl dresses, a couple of kids sized manolorian costumes, a few cosplay pieces for friends and quilts for charity and I can't figure out why I don't have time to sew for myself. You've given me a boost to make a piece for me sooner rather than later.

Watching again. I will be tackling the mock-up tomorrow. I had to cut the fantail piece into 3 different pieces because my fabric is only 45”. I too forgot about it being for corseted size, but I also thought the seam allowance is 5/8 so it should even out. I’m a short queen so I always have to remove 4” from the body. I’m doing a modern length so that was another 4 inches from the bottom. Wish me luck.

This was a fun video.... participating in the FR walking skirt course, so this was a great pre-view, and I may need to budget more sewing time! What am I working on?? HAHA... Screens. We live in a super old house, so a while back I made fabric frames and we velcro them to the windows. And ours in the bedroom was torn by a fly hunting cat, sooo.... I've found that haircloth of the kind used in tailoring makes a super bottom band in an Edwardian skirt, stiff direction running around the hem. I happened to have the haircloth, but not tarlatan.
I've been eyeing this pattern and may give it a try. Meanwhile, dealing with UFOs &alterations, developing a Granny Weatherwax costume, and watching Secrets of Skinwalker Ranch.

What a lot of work! Watching this video for only a short time is inspiring me to think about maybe mending a long vintage plaid skirt instead of cutting it up to use some of the fabric from it. Because a long wool skirt is warm to wear in the winter. If I haven't already given it away out of my stash of fabric. Really old patterns from some pattern companies more than others do not come with any selvedges included for people sewing at home most of whom prefer that sort of thing. Sewing patterns older than that do not have any instructions at all which go with the pattern. Maybe only because the printing presses which made them would have charged too much to include the instructions? So now I have a vintage pattern here at home for the same draped knit dress with intricate gold work embroidery on a panel just below the waist that actor Betty Davis wore when very young in a movie once and I don't have a clue how to sew it up. I would have to think about that for so long it might now never happen. No wonder people like my mom had attend a post secondary education program in order to learn how to sew up clothing at home in their cottage industries.

My problem with spray basting is that it’s forever if you can’t wash it, but if you get the good quilting stuff, it’s pretty light weight. Don’t use standard non-sewing spray baste , cause apparently it gums up your machine.
I've made two full length walking skirts so far, and I have the fabric for a third. They are absolutely fantastic to wear, and surprisingly practical (once you learn how to exist in a nearly floor length skirt). Next on my list though is going to be an 1890's ballgown for costume college. I have the idea drawn out, I just need to actually get started on the thing!

When you placed your hand against the fabric and the…(do we call it an F-stop still?)…changed allowing the darkness of the fabric to start to come through, it made me wonder what the heck the colors of all your other garments actually were because obviously we’re not seeing the real deal, lol.

I've been playing JJ for like a year and a half. I think I'm on level 505, so started the second books or whatever. You reminded me to look in so I could get today's item.
I've been listening to a few books that have kept me off the youtubes a bit. I tend to get omnibus editions when authors offer them. Most recently, I finished books 6-9 of a series about a character who has paranormal abilities and is working with a group of paranormal hunters to try and figure out what she is. They're good cozy paranormal mysteries. (the Charlie Rhodes series by Amanda M Lee).
I've got some pants to make for a friend in my next to do queue for sewing, I also talked to my landlord and she's going to help her mom go through her stuff soon and she thinks there's fabric in there that she offered me, so that's exciting :D
I'm kinda bummed about having to switch over my wardrobe, but, oh, wells. I need to go do that before I go to bed tonight so I have weather appropriate things to wear in the morning.

Very pretty Skirt, love the fabric. I also made skirts from this pattern and yes, I fell into the same size-trap. I solved it with just ignoring the darts and lengthening the waistband. Last winter I also did her Skirted Jacket, it's very nice but the construction was a bit complicated and you have to remind yourelf to adjust the width.
Otherwise I mostly like her patterns, but what I don't like is this included waist-reduction-nonsense and that in patterns with more pieces and options the pieces are printed over each other, so that I can only use ONE Version of - as an example - the sleeve.
So to not destroy the pattern I had to copy most of the pieces onto paper - I find that super annoying.

SO glad you said something about the pattern automatically reducing the waist down 1.5". Literally was cutting out their Victorian underwear pattern while watching this and yep, sure enough, they've reduced down the waist by 1.5". On the drawers??? 🤨 I hath cuteth a size up. Thanks!

Working on: okay so like I finished the pirate shirt, but I was trying to level up my rolled hems and half of them need to be restitched because there are some unravelly bits after the first wash.

Hi Noelle! Your skirt turned out wonderful🤩! Love the plaid and the colors of it. I learned from your board and I am using a todo list, too. I recently started being self-employed and taking commissions. To keep track of all the activities such a list is a life saver! 😂 Working on two chef’s jackets (for one person), a flamenco blouse, a flamenco skirt and using the Cricut to put someone’s logo on jackets. And in the evening sitting quietly with some crochet work, as I am a volunteer for Knitted Knockers. 😅Maybe I should calm down a bit 😂

Such a pretty skirt! My current project takes a little bit of backstory. Several months ago at the beginning of this current school year, I made my youngest child a very pretty hooded cloak (blue brushed psuedo-suede fabric with an apple-pattern cotton lining) with a pattern that I drafted off of an existing costume cloak she already had. Unfortunately, I forgot to allow for seam allowance when putting the new cloak together, so it ended up a little smaller than it was supposed to. 😅 So now I am going back and making a whole new cloak for her, in black twill this time with a rainbow butterfly cotton print lining, and I just ordered the lining fabric. Wish me luck!

This pattern was the first thing I tried out after being gifted my sewing machine. Context: I learned how to sew as a kid and had *some* basic knowledge of sewing. But I can confirm that this was above my pay grade. I didn't do most of the interior steps and was entirely confused by the plackets. Amnnd I ran out of fabric to do the iconic fan pleats. But! It turned out not half bad for a first. I've been wanting ti go back and try it again. So thank you for showing me how to do it with all the other steps!! This is a great help!!!
I love your skirt! I am so glad you made this. I am currently working on this same pattern; mine is still in the mock-up stage. I am a beginner to clothes sewing, so this video was great to see. My skirt will be denim with a purple lining, just because. I hope to have it done in time for winter. Thank you for showing how you did the placket. That part had me a little flustered. Turns out, I was making it harder than it actually is.
I often find that when i am confused about something, that is exactly what i am doing, too!
They gave you a modern pocket. women use handbags, they don't need pocket - unless those women are like me and don't use a handbag lol. gorgeous skirt love

Just finished Ghost Story for the first time yesterday. Been tearing through the series since my library got the first two e-book collection sets. Was a good one but definitely not my favorite of the series so far. I really like how you can see influences of Laurell K. Hamilton in Butcher's work, just with way less adult content. Was going to start book 14 but need to change gears and read Terry Pratchett's Mort first. Too much Dresden. Need some humorous fantasy as a palette cleanser. :)

I did the same thing with pockets on my ridiculous tiered wrap dress! She's a LOVELY skirt! Working on a sleeveless shirt that I cut two sizes too big 😢

I've made 4 Laughing Moon 1890s Victorian walking skirts in various fabrics, but I want this pattern! It's better in some ways and definitely would flatter my body better. That waistband is pure genius!
I wear skirts for my job and I really want to make this, but not in wool. Any suggestions? I was thinking a simple patterned cotton, with a lighter cotton or maybe a double gauze lining? It doesn't need to be beefy, but it needs to stand up to San Francisco wind (it's been insane the last few weeks!). A deeper hem with the 10" of tarlatan? aaaagghhh so many things to learn 😅
