  • piano sonata no.22 in f major, played in the second round of the solo finals of the 64th busoni piano competition, august 2023
disclaimer: there is a cut in the middle of the second movement, just before the repeat. the reason is that i've had a memory lapse. a really sad thing especially considering that i've prepared for the competition so much and then had a thing like that pretty much right at the beginning of the performance, as I had 50 minutes more to play. the main reason behind this is an unfortunate event that happened with me right after getting to know that I got qualified for the next round, on the evening of the 25th: I went for a jolly walk through the city center and suddenly my attention got caught by a gentleman who looked as a local who was drinking out of a certain fountain which looked perfectly legit in twilight. well, next thing you know, I'm drinking from the fountain, and then I'm getting knocked out for the whole next day with a wild water poisoning accompanied by a maaad fever that I haven't had for a very long time, nausea and vomiting. I recovered in time to perform on the morning of the 27th, but the performance has suffered, alas, from the technical point of view. quite a life lesson I must say!

Just seen your other performances. I have to commend you on your sheer cojones for playing these well-known, well-circulated pieces of music in a very original way. Just from listening, your philosophy in musical approach speaks very clearly! I admire pianists who inhabit this attribute of courage and originality in their playing above all others, regardless the odd mistake or level of technical faculty - I'd take a unique take on a short Chopin prelude or Beethoven sonata over a clean-cut, erring on the side of 'predictable' playing of Liszt any day!
Though you're not a finished product, which can be said of anybody, I really seriously enjoy your playing because it speaks of a level of thoughtfulness that reflects clearly, way beyond the vast majority of pianists. (Trust me, some people become the 'finished' thing very early on, stay the same and stagnate or that's all they're known for - so I mean that as only a compliment)
One question, out of curiosity, do you have any particular 'idols' or role model pianists in the pianistiverse?
P.S: It's unfortunate to hear about your water fountain scenario, hope it's something you don't forget in a hurry!!

many thanks for such a long and kind message, I very much appreciate it! it'd be hard to name any particular role models but the pianists I appreciate the most would be samson françois, alfred cortot and ignacy jan paderewski. and of the most famous ones, I would probably pick horowitz over others anytime. I'm quite a big fan of the interwar era recordings overall.
