    I tried straight flouro on my finesse setup once…. spinning reels and flouro don’t get along. I find using a ridiculous long 35ft leader on braid works.

    Finally...a spybait post. I was about to hunt your previous posts to see if you've covered it previously. 4 lb test and super slow retrieve...seems like there have got to be better baits for the conditions.

    I've had some good days on Table Rock in the summer time. I use it after they're done hitting topwaters in the morning, but they're still chasing shad in 10ft-15ft (over 30ft-100ft). Biggest on the Spinbait80 is a 20" smallie.

    Would a split ring, loop knot, or small snap help with the side to side action with 6-8lb line. I guess most guys don’t want to buy another set up just to use the spy bait. I guess you could use the same rod for a #5 Shad rap

    The only spy bait I use is the deps calling hustler way bigger then the finesse setup ones weights 1oz an def can use heavier line vs the finesse one but still not to heavy max maybe 14lb but. Still can get away with like 16lb or 17lb but. You lose a bit of action but the deps calling hustler can be fished near weeds and structure and is a bit different then other spy baits but also works in open water to.

    I generally don’t finesse fish at all when the water is warm. Up here in the north east the water temperature is dropping into the high 40’s and I catch a lot of fish on hair jigs, swim baits, drop shot, underspin, jerk baits and metal baits. I’ll have to take your tips and try the spy bait again.

    There are several UA-cam videos on spy baiting by Aaron Martens which are a "must see". Lots of information about line size, including when to use heavier line, when to use a faster retrieve, when to use braid with a flourocarbon leader, how to keep the bass pinned so you don't lose them, etc, etc.

    Haven't played with spy baits. As you said, it's a light line technique. I'm all about light line!!! Finesse fishing is where I really am deadly!!!! Straight fluorocarbon line is a must for these issues. With that being said...... knots are where you need experience. I've fished for hours and then all the sudden you hook up on a good fish and all the sudden,....your knot comes untied. I use a plethora of knots and to be honest..... it's a gamble sometimes but I have noticed that there is a difference in fluorocarbon line on the market. I prefer Seaguar over all others. I don't use super glue either. I just don't. I need to look into spy baits a little deeper. I'm old school and have other ways but I agree that I need to give this a serious try

    I looked at Edward Evers do a piece on spy baits. For one of the lakes too. In the high summer months. And for some reason the bait looked awful familiar. I came across my 1990 published 'Guide to Salmon Flies'. And realized that it's main contributor was one Arthur Oglesby (John Buckland the co-author encouraged him to assemble the collection of photographs of original designs). Some of those designs dated from way back. There were Irish salmon flies. That were made by 'hat' makers (those were the original lure manufacturers, the hat making professionals). Back around the time of George Washington. And sure enough. On one of the pages was a patented nineteenth century Scandinavian design of lure. For catching salmon. That was exactly like the spy bait. That they use for bass fishing now. I've seen the Oglesby book circulating around in the second hand market lately. And it's one. That some bass anglers could look at and enjoy.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 3 роки тому

      Oglesby used to show up in Alaska many times in the eighties. Where he crossed pathways there. With a young gear tackle and bass angler. Named Jerry French who was working as a salmon fishing guide. Jerry French had changed over at that time. To making his own salmon flies. So that he would supply baits as well as boat driving services to his clients. On the Alaskan rivers. One of whom was Oglesby. And French who later came up with the definitive steelhead 'break through' fly design (in fact it was one, that worked well in calmer water known as 'plug' water on the Pacific rivers). Thanked Oglesby for some help. In coming up with the unique steel shank mounted lure design. That French and his colleagues. Finally settled on. To catch some very large steelhead with. It goes to demonstrate though. The extent to which a lot of this stuff. In fishing. It spreads around from place to place. Over time.

    • @academicmailbox7798

      Milliner is the name that I couldn't remember. A milliner is somebody. Who makes hats. What you have got. In a lot of those Scandinavian salmon rivers. Where they fish for the runs of fish. When the water is practically frozen over (but the current clears just enough space to allow anglers room to fish). The water in those parts of the world. Is super clear. And the salmon won't budge. To anything unless. The angler is able to work it slow enough.

      Spybaits work great on fall/winter trout. I do use 6lb florocarbon leader about 13 feet on 20 lb braid. Worst problem I’ve had is loosing fish because they pull the rear hook out of the body of the lure. Have to fish slow 4-5 slow cranks and a twitch/pause.

      I kill em with the Screwhead and Keitech / Rage Swimmer. Fiddle with color / size / bait / line size(if you can). Cast, countdown, and slow retrieve. If you know they're around be very aware of the weight of the bait, they don't put a lot of effort into eating that little guy, you may be missing soft bites.
      Followers aren't eaters, don't get too caught up thinking "if they follow bait X, they'll eat bait X."

  • @dbender3644
    @dbender3644 3 роки тому

    The video is just Randy's point of view. I don't know many anglers that have an entire reel with 4lb fluoro spooled up, me personally I never use less than 6lb and my lake is 8+ ft of visibility. On my local lake I use 8lb fluoro and I do well using my Duo Realis. Ever read the outside of a box of fluoro? Almost all boxes say something like "Nearly invisible to bass" so why go to 4lb? The Duo Realis is heavy, 1 bird's nest while casting and you just threw 12$ in the lake using 4lb fluoro. Like Randy I have found reeling it in with a slow retrieve and a little pop in your rod every 10ft seems to work well for me. I go to my spy bait when my jerkbait just doesn't seem to get to the depth or reaction I want from the fish. Like the Okashira screw head those blades help give the bait a very subtle wobble and if you're not going slow enough that wobble doesn't really have it's full affect in the water.
