Great teaching!! Thanks so much. I love how you explain what a short row is, etc. and all the other explanations in doing this technique. Thanks, Hannah. *grin*
I have watched SO many videos on short rows....yours is definitely, for me, has been the best! Thank you and I’m now subscribed. Maybe the fact that I learned to knit with a group of British ladies; I was so pleased to see you knit the same way I do....
Hi Leslie! Thanks for leaving such a lovely comment. It's so good to know this video has helped you! Yes, so many styles of knitting can get confusing. :D have a great week, happy knitting!
Thank you so much Hannah. Ive been knitting for 60 years and has never come across a successful wrap and turn before. Delighted with your easy to understand and see how to do it.
Best explanation I’ve seen. Trying to improve my skills but so many UA-camrs knit Continental. I’m an English style knitter and the way you explained it made it seem so sensible and simple. Well done.
The *best* tutorial on wrap and turns. Love the trick about hiding the holes as well. This would have been helpful knowing years ago! Thanks so so much!
Thank you for your clear, concise and slow motion demonstration especially when picking up the stitches. Your so much better than other teachers out there!
Thank you so much Hannah! You made it look so simple and straightforward - and it was! I had been *dreading* getting to that part of the shaping but I sailed through it, no holes, first time ever doing a w&t! I am so glad I found your channel!
So so glad I've found your channel! I've been knitting for a while but kind of stuck to easier patterns whereas now I'm branching out into more difficult patterns and learned how to do loads of different things through your channel! 😊
Hello, I've been knitting for 40yrs plus but never come across wrap and turn 🤦🏼♀️ I had made up most of the garment but when I got to this bit I was about to abandon the whole thing but this video has been really helpful. Thank you 🧶😊
Yes, the only time I came across this in my early days was form knitting Christmas decorations, all the shaping came from wrap and turn in some patterns. Happy knitting 🧶
I am new to knitting but I have a pattern that calls for short row knitting. I feel I am ahead of myself.(ha). Thank you and I am so glad I found you. I also subscribed to you channel.
Wow I have been knitting sweaters using wrap and turn but never knew this second step when you come back to the st that you wrap and turn st. Thanks so much🌺💕❤️
Thanks Hannah 🙏🏻 I loved seeing your instructions for the wrap and turn. I’ll be honest it hasn’t been my favorite shaping for knitting but you made it seem very simple and easy to use. Also I loved seeing you 😁 Maria
The wrap and turn can be done in multiple ways, this tutorial is actually the German short row-at the time I filmed I didn't know it was also called that! Happy knitting 🧶
Thank you so much for this! I’m knitting my first ever jumper and kept ending up with huge holes where the sleeves started due to W&Ping normally. You’re a life saver :)
I have wanted to add short rows to sweaters, but always had holes. I've watched a lot of videos, but yours is the only one that gave me the results I wanted. Thank you for this.
Thank you for sharing this technique with us. When getting ready to knit the wrap and the stitch together, is there any difference in how you pick up the wrap if you need to purl across the row instead of knit?
Hi Marilyn, I'm always here in the comments, no problem. some times it will take a little longer than others. 'Double Stitch' is another term for German short rows - which is in this video. Knitting methods can be confusing with the different wording used in different styles of knitting: Double knitting, rather than double stitch, is a different method of knitting. You make a double layer of fabric, knitting the back and front at the same time as you go across the row. (Doubel knitting is also a type of yarn) Makes it nice and easy, doesn't it! Happy knitting 🧶
Thanks for the clear instructions! I'm following a pattern that says to slipstitch and turn... is this the same as wrap and turn? If not, can I wrap and turn instead?
Yes, it’s similar, just use the technique to knit the wrap and slipped stitch together as I showed here, and it’ll be the same. The only difference I think is that the unknitted slipped stitch is on a different needle as you turn.
Not able to navigate sending a photo the pattern after starting 4 times and reading the directions over and over and watching the video I’m making progress! It’s not knowing if I should be on the knit side or purl side when making the DS? Because I am not very experienced I haven’t been aware while reading the pattern. Lento by Jonna Hietala, Sweater in LAINE Summer 2021 Thanks for your help 😀
Hi Hannah, I just found your Knitting Short Rows video and wanted to say thanks; it's so helpful, and the work is so neat. I have one question: at about 3mins 45 seconds, you "Knit across the wrap", and as I said earlier, it's wonderful, but what would I do if I wanted to continue with short rows for a while longer. Should I still "Knit across the wrap" and then continue with the short rows, or do I not "knit across the wrap" until I'm ready to recommence full-length rows? I look forward to hearing back from you.
Hi, the knit and wrap would only be knitted across if the pattern says to knit further on the next row going in the same direction. A lot of short row patterns either reduce or increase the number of stitches and continue wrapping and turning a few times to make a specific effect, but the pattern will be telling you which to do. Whenever you knit over the wrap for the first time, so the technique I suggest here to prevent the hole. Happy knitting 🧶
Hi, Hannah, I've got a couple of questions. 1) I didn't find the place where all your demos are collected in one place.Where is that? I did click "Subscribe" however.2) What about wrapping from the purl side of a piece of stockinette knitting? Thank you!
So sorry - I just spotted the UA-cam video for wrap and turn on the purl row. But I would like to find the link to the PDF of your wrap & turn video. Thank you very much!
Hi! Yes, good question. :D It's basically the same technique, just making sure you knit the wrap and stitch together will prevent the holes. I'll put it on my list for another video. Happy knitting!
I came to the comments for the answer to this question too!!! I’m knitting with a tiny needle and sock weight yarn. Will check the other vids on your channel.
The pattern will say turn and knit back, or something like that, that’s what creates the shaping. the next written row will likely be the same stitch as you started the wrap and turn row with. Happy knitting 🧶
Yes, multiple wraps and turns will stop at slightly different places along the row, to give shape, so if you're wrapping and turning multiple times knit up the wrap with each repeat. Happy knitting!
It can depend on who's writing the pattern, as to whether the returning across the row is included in the instructions for w&t or written as a 2nd row. If you're knitting 7, then w&t, you'll need to go back across those 7 stitches. If the 'row 2' says knit 7, that's your row 2. If not, it's assumed that you've already knitted those 7. Row 3 and onward will also give you clues, depending on the pattern. You'll have a better idea of whether you're increasing in the same place again or on the opposite side for different shaping reasons. Perhaps you have different stitch patterns, like purling and ribbing for different rows too.
hi Mary, you're still making stitches in the same way, the previous stitch is being discarded to either the front, if you're purling or back, if you're knitting. So, when you're moving the needles from front to back and purling every row it will look like knitted garter stitch. This video will help explain it too: ua-cam.com/video/vQmYAnbxz44/v-deo.html Happy Knitting!
Thx for ur suggestions and the link. But that does not address my problem. I’m knitting short rows and on the last return row I have very loose stitches over the t& w stitches ( the holes). Is there a way to send you a photo. I tried to tighten up and other methods and to no avail.
@@marylovie7628 I'd definitely make sure you do use the trick I suggest for returning along the next row, but it is really down to practice. Sometimes tightening actually makes the stitches bigger, because of the way the yarn carries across the row.
Hi, Judith. I don't know. I've not come across that before. I'm wondering if it's a typo. Always take a look at the abbreviations list in your pattern - there should be a list of what the letters mean, either at the beginning or end of the pattern or if you're reading a pattern from a book it'll likely be in one big list somewhere. happy knitting! 😍
Hi Candice! If you just turn you’ll likely end up with a bit of a hole, wrapping avoids that. It will depend on the pattern, whether the possibility of holes are allowed for on consequent rows. But in my experience using the method in this video gives the best results. Happy knitting! 🧶
It's entirely dependent on how you'd like it to look. But right at the side of the neck, yes it won't really show, so go for it as you are and add more abbreviations and techniques when you're ready. Hope it goes well! happy knitting. 😍
Knit With Hannah thank you SO much. I am finding some things in the pattern a little ambiguous- well for me as a beginner. Thank you for your help and clarity 💕
This work wrap instruction I have seems a little different than what’s here. “Insert right needle between the 4th and 5th sts on left needle; k1, drawing a longer than usual st, k4, pass one strand of long st over the other 4 sts to make wrap” It sounds like a decrease and wrap, while also keeping enough yarn to make it look like I weaved/stitched it through the work.
Hi Melissa, this isn't actually a 'wrap and turn', it's a wrap so that the yarn is visible, more like a feature so that the yarn is creating the pattern, not shaping the knitting fabric, like wrap and turn does. Also it doesn't look like decreasing, as you'll have the same number of stitches by the end of the row I think. This style of feature is sometimes done by slipping stitches too, like here: ua-cam.com/video/V-SACj4yUjs/v-deo.html Happy knitting 🧶
Wow omg this is amazing!!!!!!! I knit wig caps for rag dolls using the shirt rows and can’t stand the little holes. This has made my work look soooo much better!!!!! Now to figure out how to do it in purl!!! 😳😅
Hi Nicky! so glad this was helpful for you. (yes those pesky holes are annoying!) Use the very similar technique when you're starting on a purl row, making sure you purl both pieces when you're on the next row.
This is a fantastic idea very clear instructions. However how do I avoid those holes on my knitting. The instructions say knit to last 3 three stitches then turn then I do the purl row where it then says purl to last 6 stitches then do w&t. So I never get to the first w&t. So I can’t do what you said to avoid those holes. Can you please help??????
@@KnitWithHannah I have never knitted like this before. Actually this is the first time I have heard of this w&t. Hi, the knit and wrap would only be knitted across if the pattern says to knit further on the next row going in the same direction. A lot of short row patterns either reduce or increase the number of stitches and continue wrapping and turning a few times to make a specific effect, but the pattern will be telling you which to do. I came to the comments for the answer to this question too!!! I’m knitting with a tiny needle and sock weight yarn. Will check the other vids on your channel.
I just have one question, if the pattern tells you to knit to the last five stitches do you do your wrap and turn on the stitch before the 5th stitch.
I’d knit until there are 5 stitches left on left hand needle, then wrap the first stitch on left hand needle and continue with pattern.
When I tried this I ended up with an additional stitch on my needle. What did I do wrong??
Hi, You could be knitting the wrap and the original stitches which would give you an extra stitch from the wrap. Hope it's worked out for you. 🧶
Thanks novice here
Do the stitches you knit after the turn count as another row?
The pattern will say turn and knit back, or something like that, that’s what creates the shaping. the next written row will likely be the same stitch as you started the wrap and turn row with.
Happy knitting 🧶
If you have a second row of the wrap and turn do you still knit 2 together?
Yes, multiple wraps and turns will stop at slightly different places along the row, to give shape, so if you're wrapping and turning multiple times knit up the wrap with each repeat. Happy knitting!
Thank you!
Still confused as to when I knit the rest of the row.Pattern says k7 w&t 2nd row k am I just on the first 7 or straight across😤

How is it that the stitches still look knitted on Perl side when knitting in garter stitch? That’s what is happing in my work?
hi Mary, you're still making stitches in the same way, the previous stitch is being discarded to either the front, if you're purling or back, if you're knitting. So, when you're moving the needles from front to back and purling every row it will look like knitted garter stitch. This video will help explain it too: ua-cam.com/video/vQmYAnbxz44/v-deo.html
