- The handy Speedy Stitcher sewing awl should be included as a survival item in your pack, it is very effective for repairs, it can easily sew heavy items, leather, pack cloth, canvas, etc. In this video we show this sewing awl and how to use it, as well as some Mukluks that were made with it. More info on our site wildernessinnov...
Thanks for this post. Lost the instructions to our old awl. Now know how to use it, again!
Thanks so much for the tutorial! Was able to learn and apply it.. Just stitched the window to the canvas on my convertible.. Took maybe 2 hours tops!
I have used the Speedy Stitch and EZ Awl for years.. and it is THE BEST sewing kit for the bush.. bar none! Thanks for this simple and easy to understand video Perry.
Ive had one of these stitch awls for years and never really figured it out, and im talking 20 plus years! thanks for enlightening me.
@wildernessinnovation This was great Guys! I have a folding sea kayak hull to fix and did a lousy job on my first try at using the Speedy Stitcher, this really demystifies the thing. Thanks!
I have not needed to repair gear in the back country but I know, it's just a matter of time. I found your video while looking for ideas. Great job. It's very easy to follow your instructions.
I'll own one of these.
I watched a couple of vids, another before yours, I wanted to thank you for showing how to thread the awl, I cant wait to start using this!! I'm very excited to have this for projects! thanks :)
Glad to be of help to you, thanks
Great video thankyou. We bought one of these to fix a convertable top and it works well.Good quality tool.
Thanks for the very informative video. Going to add an easy stitcher to my bug out bag.
This was a HUGE help to get me started on some Daisy Chains for the side of my minimalist pack-that's the one thing I wish it had and now it does.
Just got my kit, this video is just the ticket!
John Tymecki good, thanks man !!
I have just bought one of these to repair one of my most comfortable shoes (I would be lost without them). Thanks for the demo, really good.
Great video! I picked one of these up at Joanne's Fabrics, because I am working on repairing a Kenworth truck seat. I am going to cut out the torn, damaged sections, and replace it with the original type of fabric (which I found online). I have been a little intimidated to start, so I am just practicing on scraps now. I learned to sew as a kid in a history camp, but I have rarely used it, and never took on heavier fabrics until now. I discovered the Speedy Stitcher through it's positive reviews online. It is good to have a how-to to go along with the instructions that came with the tool.
+Mike McGuire Thanks Mike, have a great day
Thank you so much, I didn't know how to do that by hand or by awl. Really, thank you.
I had no idea it was so easy to learn to repair your leather furniture
fun, fun....thanks for watching
THUMBS UP!!
I'VE WATCHED A LOT OF YOUR VIDEOS AND YOU HAVE BEEN A BIG HELP TO MANY OF US OUT HERE. I HAVE TO THANK YOU!! I especially appreciate how you really take the time to assure your watchers that you haven't left out any important details. So when we try the same things your teaching we don't leave out a step or two. You take your time, show it clearly, which gives viewers a honest chance to accomplish the same task. I do a lot of DIY tasks around the ranch as well as for my camping, bush craft, survival, hunting etc. etc. So thanks again, even tho I'm pretty handy i sure don't know it all, its embarrassing to admit that damn speedy stitcher had me pulling my hair out, and just did my little sewing jobs with needle and thimble and a pair of pliers to pull needle threw . Wife and i enjoy your videos showing your products and ideas of which we may not of thought of. THUMBS UP FROM TUCSON AZ.
+Gene Sauerbry Thank you so much for watching and thanks for you comment, that means a lot to me. Glad to be of help to you.
Thank you for this video ! The small paper instruction coming with this guy is not enough. No, I can repair stuff like a pro ! :)
Thank you so much. Never could have done it without your help! You're a terrific teacher.
hhmm...very nice. I am going to look into buying one more camping/bug out bag.I've been wanting to do some modifications to my backpack, i thought it was impossible but after seeing this i think it can work. Great tutorial
Good video. I used this to repair a strap on my luggage.
Thank you very much for this video -- I have had one of these little tools hanging around for a while now and never knew how to use it -- until now! I appreciate the effort you put into making this how-to. It was very clear and helpful.
Very informative and well presented - thanks mate.
Thank you for sharing this. I wanted enough information to decide if I was going to make my own tool rolls out of canvas and/or leather. Your video got me to order a speedy stitcher and some leather to get started. Just what I was looking for.
I have one of those, but never used it. Thanks for the demo.
Thank-you for the demo, I was thinking about getting one of these but didn't know how to use it. I would think this is a must have item.
Thanks for making this video the instructions were ok but it really takes someone showing you to understand what to do.
Fantastic! Always good to get geared up and practice with the gear! Thanks for your feedback and thanks for watching!
I picked up one of these today to do a small reupholstery job on my office chair. Worked like a charm. You can make the stitches quite quickly once you get the hang of it, have some muscle memory developed. The newer packages the stitcher comes in have illustrated instructions by the resolution is low and it's hard to see details. Video demonstration very helpful.
Love the Speedy Stitcher. Really easy to use and small enough to pack with you.
Bill, it's a great item, bailed me out more than once, thanks
I bought a version of it at Hobby Lobby. Doesn't look like it would compare to the real thing. Something else on my list now.
Thank you for this video. It breaks down the steps and explains how to sew with an awl clearly...even I got it!
nicely done. I love those stitchers!
Really excellent instructions thank you for your time and kindness.PS bought one of these to make a knife sheath.
Thanks for this. The four pictures in my instructions just weren't cutting it. Huge help.
That's what I need to learn, very thanks for share your work. In saluto dall'Italia!
It's a very useful tool, you can fix stuff good as new with it.
Yes, my project its shoes hand making, special thanks cause it's long time that I try to understand how this tool play. Sharing whit other our capacities it's important. You have a new subscriber. Grazie mille
Thanks to you I can now use this tool. Thanks very much,Dave Frederick,MD
I'm looking into making some kilt sporrans, this video helped me out so much. huge thanks .
cheers
Thank you for the video. I need to add some molle (pals) webbing to a pack. So I can add some pouches to the out side.
@BushcraftOnFire Thanks man, We love the things too, it's really the only way to make a durable lasting repair in the field...Have a great day!!
Just got mine today, appreciate the tutorial.
Thanks for making this! The video was so much more helpful than the instructions that came with the awl!
Perfect introductory video for me. Great demonstration!
+kc329191 Glad I could help out, let me know if you have other questions. perry@wildernessinnovation.com

Nice demonstration. Thank you
Thank you very much, I could redo the video and make it a little more clear, but haven't got around to it. Glad it helped you!!
Excellent instruction. I know I can do it myself now. Thanks
I've always wondered how to properly use the Handy speedy stitcher.. and now i know.
@shepherdbaba Yes they are a wonderful tool and are part of my mid level kit. You are correct even if the stitches don't look the best they are still quite strong. When I am sewing on a project, after about 10 or 15 minutes the stitching looks better and is easier to do. Thanks for watching
Nice demonstration. Thankyou
@451mnu Thanks so much, glad you enjoy using it now, have a great day
@limpingdwarf Thanks for the comment. Glad it was helpful. Have a great day!!
@silasrossi You are welcome. you'll be surprised how many things you can do with this great tool!!
Getting one.. good tutorial Sir!!
Thanks for your comment. It is a handy tool both at home and out on the trail.
@Hutzjohn Man I love mine, I have sewed up packs. belts, straps, tarps, boots, etc with mine, while out in the sticks.
pretty well any outdoor store has them I believe. We will have them on our website soon.
@guns4good Thanks, lol. They really are handy. If a strap on your backpack comes undone you can fix it with the Speedy Stitcher also. Have a great day!!
@falatoronto Great!! It will be a bit awkward for the first 5 minutes or so, then you will start getting the feel for it. I've done a lot of sewing with the Speedy Stitcher while watching TV, it's not too bad. Have a great day!!
excellent video. Thanks
Enlightening tutorial Thank you
very informative thank you for this video!!!
Thanks for the stitching lesson.
Thanks. Worked great.
Thank you, very concise.
+vza423 Thank you for watching!!
Thanks! Very helpful
@DDJanowski So glad it was helpful, thanks for your comment
Thanks for the video it was a big help.
@wildernessinnovation Ok, I was afraid you'd say that! ha ha But I'm sure with practice it will go easy. Thanks again!
Thank you for this great instruction video! :)
+Allison M Thank you for watching!!
@coco2mo Haha...glad we could help, thanks!!
Cool...gotta get one!
@jabawaki101 I generally keep length of the tail to whatever is convenient. There is no real way to avoid having thread on both sides of the material, that's what gives you the lock stitch, it's the strongest stitch out there. It's not a big deal though, once you get going, you can really fly anyway. Thanks for watching and for your comment, have a great day!!
@safetyman66 Thank you, we are in process of making a video on how to make your own mukluks, and we did a detailed segment on using the Speedy Stitcher to sew up boots. Have a great day man!!
thanks, finally you showed me the way!
Thank you for your full instraction.
@edgehabitat The stitcher is on the outside and the needle pokes inside where with my other hand I put the free end of thread through the loop made when I pull the stitcher out a bit.
Very informative. Thank you!
This was fantastic, thanks!!!
@skulldrinker Hey man you are welcome, glad to help out!!
Good job
Thank you very much for this demonstration
+Romila Lal You are welcome. I should probably do a new video, just for fun. I made a really nice knife sheath with the Speedy Stitcher over the last winter, it was so easy. Thanks for your comment
I am ready to watch your next video
i'm actually going to make a sheath for a survival knife that i crafted from a bastard file, looks like just the tool for me. easier than an icepick and sewing needle.
Cool tool. Makes sewing so simple.
How come my friends never told me about great an Awl can be?
thanks man great video i own one of these went to use and was like uhh ohh ... thanks youtube
@ABCarlough Thanks for watching. Later on we will be using the Speedy Stitcher to make some things. Take care.
Could I use other types of thread with this? I'm making collars and need black thread, and doing the decorations I also need a thinner thread. Thanks for the great video!
could you make a vid one how to make these amazing mukluks of yours? im going up north in canada for a cross country ski trip next week with some friends and i need boots. these look amazing and i have decided mukluks seem like the only way to go. where can i get patterns?
this is really good. I gots to get me one of these? I am getting bored with two needle saddle stitching style. Cheers and thanks
Just try it out on something, even scraps just for practice, it's pretty easy once you work with it for about 10 minutes
Thanks so much! But I still don't understand how you sewed the sole onto the mukluk. How do you make the stitch when the needle is poking into the inside of the boot?
Haha, sure use all the options available, the pocket fisherman...thanks!!
Thank you =)
Thanks for watching
Hey thanks for watching, hope you get some good use out of your Speedy Stitcher..
Do you have a video or any tips on how you keep your bobbin so tidy? I just got my stitch er yesterday and the bobbin was a mess. I tried to re spool it by hand and it did not turn out much better. It keeps getting hung up similar to a backlash on a bait-cast reel.
Thanks!
No: Six you are welcome thanks for watching.
Hi, nice vid. Quick question- How long of 1mm waxed thread will that bobbin hold?
hey...I did it but first time wasnt so bad plus I needed some extra hands but unfortunatly I pooked my wife's finger...lmao... but job came out nice/ thanxs for the instructions
brilliant thankyou
How did you get that bobbin thread through the tiny hole in the wood handle?
