We live just down the road from the dam and there is a constant stream of vehicles looking to park at the dam. I wouldn't bring a caravan or a large RV. It really is suited for a hiace camper van size and as you say barely any room. It is Blenheim's very cursory nod to freedom camping in this area. We see the same house truck in the area that clearly stays there quite frequently. The Waterlea race course is better. The campsite by the bridge on the way into town is very transient.

That's exactly what I was thinking; it seems as if they supplied that area as a token freedom camp to make the region look RV friendly, but only just. The park itself is beautiful, but it's plain dangerous for vans to be that close. When I stayed, there were three large motorhomes and my caravan, and all the little tourist vans squeezed in between us.
You're lucky to live in such a stunning region. I love the beauty and humidity of Blenheim. I'd love to move to that area.

Not for me thanks, to cramped. Even the 3 metre in the NZMC park I feel is to close. Thanks for sharing and putting us in the picture so to speak 👍

      😂 You're a man of good taste.
The European tourists on either side of me were so well behaved, but we were so squashed in it felt socially awkward 😂
Most of the NZMCA gang were at the racecourse.
