  • Music Director Uttam Singh has won a number of awards, including Filmfare Award and Zee Cine Award for 'Dil To Pagal Hai' (1997). He was also nominated for Filmfare Award for 'Gadar - Ek Prem Kahani' (2001). Gadar brought him a number of other awards.
Here, Uttam Singh ji tells us how Dada would would be very happy if his neighborhood paanwala told him that the songs of his latest released film were super hit. (Not discussed here is that Dada had a habit of taking opinion of his household servants after composing a song, as he felt that is was the common man who had a discerning ear for a film song.)
Uttam Singh tells us how in Guide (1965), a dance song 'Piya tose naina lage re' has been composed by Dada in seven matras in roopak taal. This is the only song in the last 50 years, till date.
We are told how a senior producer-director had to wait for one and a half month before he could gain entry in to Dada's bungalow called 'The Jet', after which he was told initially told to go to another composer . He was lucky, as there were many others who had to wait for up to six months.
Enjoy this rare interview, to get an insight in to the working of the genius that Burman Dada was.

Your work for this documentation should be kept for S.D. Burman archives for people to know about Burmans from the contemporary seasoned musicians and colleagues apart from the one dimensional knowledge we gain about S D. Burman.

@Joy Ghosh, Thank you for suggestion. My research shows there’s no one like S. D. Burman, not only in music, but as a gentle human being, towering over all others.

@@lalwanimoti Yes of course. In future people from musicology and researchers who will want to know the era the legacy of Burmans it would definitely be a ready reference to them. Normal audience only know from some basic news reports editorials articles but in reality you have actually explored S.D.Burman from different perspective his style his approach towards life his philosophy everything that too from his contemporaries who have actually seen him. Lots of thanks for this tedious work.

@@joyghosh1711 It’s said that only jeweller knows how valuable the diamonds are. Yes, these interviews are meant to let our younger generations to learn first hand about their about their idols whom they admire and worship. My focus has been on Sachin Dev Burman because he stands tall among all of them. The film industry has its good and bad all of which can’t be shared in public domain. But Sachin Karta is the only who was not affected by any bad.
Sachin da is held in high esteem by everyone that we met from Amitabh Bachchan to a simple musician who plays a minor part.
      Thank you so much.

+Ishita Saha He is the only MD whose music was not molded in any particular genre or style. It kept on varying based on the situation, the story line, the singer's vocals, the mood of the scene, etc. That's why he remained on top while others who were younger had to sit idle without any work.

      @@lalwanimoti
In the 1950s & 60s there were two types of connoisseurs appreciating movie music churned out in hundreds. In that time composers vied with each other in providing a varied & rich fare. Of these some differed from others in that they had created sort of School or Gharana of style or Trademark of their own. Their individualistic styles were so distinct that even lay people could discern.
Even remote villagers were heard identifying songs by the MD, singers taken for granted or taking a second place!
Such most distinct movie music Gharanas were established by SDB, OPN, Salil, KA & MM. The Models & output from these schools awed even the world at large in those days.
Other than these distinct schools, a host of Composers, the likes of CR, Chitragupta, Ravi, Khayaam, Jaidev, Dattaram, V.Desai, HK, SNT, L&P and others made some contributions not anything distinct of their own but mostly adapting the set format and pattern pioneered by Naushad or S&J
It is however the gharanas that ruled the roost. The competition to shower melodies got so intense that gave rise to appreciation groups with marked bias towards the gharanas. In college we often had friendly tussles between SDB & OPN fans. Teaching staff being elders were seen promoting the MM school or choice creations from the gharanas or the general menu. Not one conversation was bereft of reference to the hit song of the week. Students greeted with query "Did you hear 'मेरा दिल ये पुकारे', 'सर जो तेरा चकराये, 'जो तुम तोड़ो पिया', 'रसीक बलमा', 'आहा रिम झिम के तराने', 'एक परदेशी', 'हमसे आया न गया', 'है अपना दिल', 'मुझको एक रात की तन्हाई', ' मेरा सामने तो आवो चलिए', 'दुख भरे दिन बीतरे भैया', में ज़िन्दगी के साथ निभाने', 'सत्यम शिवम', 'उनको ये शिकायत '? etc, etc, the list is unending!
Fan groups anxiously tuned into radio ceylon at 7 am to catch the latest releases.
Vividh Bharathi & Ameen Sayani from Radio Ceylon opened and closed the day at every home. The local 'Soundwala' kept the air filled with the currently popular songs during day at various functions.
Those were the days in our life in 1950s & 60s, the golden era of indian movie music.
So much more can be said about the established gharanas and the great volume of general fare but I refrain for fear of length of this write up of reminiscences.
Remember I speak from the southern most state where hindi is not spoken or mostly ununderstood. Being so, what would have been the revelry in the hindi States? I can only imagine with a pang of envy, Lalwaniji !! Tks for the patient reading.

According to Bengali lyricist Pulak Bandyopadhyay:
Manna Dey once told me about the effort he had to put in just to get a foothold in the industry. Even when he got it, his struggle continued. With tears in his eyes he said, “Do you know, I had gone to Sachin-da’s music room to rehearse ‘Tere naina talaash kare’. The director O. P. Ralhan) of the film also came to listen to the song.
Sachin-da asked Manna Dey to sing the song for the director. In the presence of Manna Dey himself, the director told Sachin-da, ‘Will Manna Dey sing this song? What about Mukesh?’
Sachin-da replied, “Mukesh cannot sing this song.”
The director asked Sachin, ‘Why have you composed a song that Mukesh cannot sing?’
But Sachin-da remained firm. “If you want S. D. Burman’s music for Talaash, this song will have this tune and it is Manna who will sing it. If you don’t like this, you better look for another music director.”
In a way Sachin-da forced the director to accept Manna Dey for the song and the outcome is known to all. On the occasion of the silver jubilee of the film, the director said, ‘S. D. Burman Sahib, you are our Dada - our eternal Dada.’
