- This video features GWR Castle Class No. 7029 Clun Castle, LMS No. 6233 Duchess of Sutherland and LMS Black Five No. 44871.
Also featured is the infamous 1 in 37 gradient Lickey Incline and it is very rare to see unassisted steam locomotives on the climb.
Hope you enjoy the sights and sounds of a Castle at full cry.
Very good videos of all the engines . Enjoyed .
Graham, Thank you very much! Regards, John
Very enjoyable John, regards Mike.
Mike, Always good to see the Castle out and about. Glad you enjoyed. Regards, John
Excellent as usual
Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Regards, John
Excellent footage John, three steam in one day is somewhat rare nowadays, a great sound from the castle on the climb, regards nige👍
Nige, Yes as you say a rare treat together with unassisted steam on the Lickey Bank. It doesn't get much better but a pity the Duchess tackled the climb in the dark. Regards, John
Great shots John , a wonderful sight and sound on the Lickey 👍
Steve, Despite the crowds who turned up it was a "must see" event. However with only six on the hook, as stipulated by Network Rail, it made light work of the 1 in 37. I believe Vintage Trains missed a trick here as running the same train in the dark with the Duchess was not an attraction for passengers or spectators. Why not double head the train with 12 coaches and still do the same two trips. I am probably talking rubbish but to me a better proposition. Regards, John
Amazing video, lovely sound powering through!!
Kind regards Tom
Thanks Tom and I appreciate your comment. Regards, John
Cracking footage as ever John. A Castle never disappoints, but that Lickey climb was superb, and your viewpoint made the most of it. Good to see the variety of tours and motive power on the same day, too. Cheers, Rob
Rob, I described it as an action packed day but there was a lot of waiting in between. Apart from the Duchess clip the day went well. Regards, John
Great shots.
Thanks for watching and providing your comment. Regards, John
A brilliant coverage of this all action day John. I was at the Hawthorns too on the road bridge & was expecting more from Clun as she had the road? (Noted the switch with the RHTT & 20).
A fantastic assault of the Lickey and great 'victory whistle' over the top. I see you played it safe at Tamworth Lol. Regards, Brian.
Brian, I am no expert but the only reason for the slow approach to the Hawthorns I believe was a concern over platform clearance as after all it had a green signal through the station. I was disappointed with my Duchess clip. After a three hour wait we were on the Birmingham bound platform with a clear sight of the road. More and more people arrived as the time got close but no surprise here really. Then we noticed the Duchess was running late and a 6 car service train was due at the platform we were standing on. Many people behind us realised this and decided to move in front of us blocking the previous clear view. Given that both trains had the same expected times we decided to move and unfortunately with very little time to setup and very little space the clip was compromised. Other than that there was lot of waiting about but thankfully no crowds at Tamworth. Regards, John
@@GreatBritishRailways1 If that was the concern John you could have had a great shot of Cluns left cylinder being torn off 🤭.
Always will be a problem on platforms but obviously no choice at night..... Those at Barnt Green got well bowled so you made a good call as did Dan at BG. Regards, Brian.
Fantastic video John, you really got about for this one lol. Clun Castle made a really good run up the Lickey by the looks of it, better than 6233's run. Thanks for sharing, Dan
Dan, It was a good day with the only disappointment being the Duchess clip which I have explained in my response to Brian. Regards, John
Nice coverage John, plenty of lovely autumn colour about on the Lickey
Austin, Thanks and another benefit was the lack of leaves on the trackside trees on the Lickey which meant you could retain some visibility of the train on the steepest parts of the climb. Regards, John
Lovely video
Thanks Josh and I appreciate your comment. Regards, John
You must have thoroughly enjoyed being there,
An epic video of lickey Bank conquests!! 👍👌
Jason it was an epic day and which I thoroughly enjoyed. Regards, John
@@GreatBritishRailways1 glad to hear it 👍
Great video John, fantastic shots. Cheers, Jake.
Thanks Jake and I appreciate your comment. Regards, John
Fantastic coverage of the day John, but those shots of Clun, especially on the Lickey were outstanding....Regards...Bob
Bob, The Castle came up the bank quicker than I expected but still a fine sight and sound. A day to remember. Regards, John
You got some cracking footage there John. I did plan on seeing the black 5 but time was against me. Really like that shot near the summit of the lickey. Luke
Luke, I decided to stay away from the crossing at Vigo as I wanted something different. Luckily I found the spot I wanted and thanks for your comment. Regards, John
Super good video John, nice locations and sound :)
I appreciate your kind words. Regards, John
I caught the castle at the lickey incline section and the duchess at my local station on the way back
Scott, I will take a look at your videos. Regards, John
@@GreatBritishRailways1 okay
As for 44871 I’m gonna catch her at Sandwell and Dudley or Dudley port in December
Scott, I'll watch out for that tour. Regards, John
@@GreatBritishRailways1 yeah where are you going to see it
That 20 came up seconds after clun went up
Scott, It also came back down the Lickey shortly after going up the bank. Regards, John
@@GreatBritishRailways1 yeah and I thought it was gonna be used for banking duty
Great video. Clun Castle's livery looks wrong, too dark and certainly not like her sister 5043's authentic brunswick green livery!!
Thanks for the info and your kind words. Regards, John
