I have a mismatched mutt of a bike that is so improper it's proper. Bianchi San Jose single speed cross bike. Steel frame stripped of paint and rusted. Faded to light pink King headset, formally green Brooks saddle now a nice shade of pond scum brown, matches the rust colored frame perfectly. 90mm 17* stem, low riser bars, 2 speed rear hub with silver spokes in the rear and black up front. Perfect proper for me.
And here i am, riding a over 30 year old bike that has the colour "rust", not a single bolt, nut or screw is the same, half of the parts don't even really fit or were originally meant to go on this bicycle but it works and is very comfortable. :D
I found it easy to write this video off at first as some snobby fixie rider telling people what they have to do to make their bikes look good. In reality, bikes are an absolute art form and this video reflects it. In art, there should be a balance of color, like how Zach mentioned the bar tape and seat (and in my opinion for straps if you have them) should match, because it ties the bike together, especially if it is an accent color. If you mix a colorful frame with colorful parts you are making the bike look too busy, which is why you should choose between the frame being the focal point or the build being the focal point. I’ve noticed all of this because he main reason I like fixed gears is for the simple, beautiful aesthetic. Luckily, beauty is in the eye of the beholder so if you think your bike looks cool, that’s all that matters!
Great vid amigo! Great examples showing what you mean by "design" objectives. LIke your approach to what is both aligned with the purpose of the build AND beautiful.
no, no, no, you got it wrong.... It has to have 5 gear cassette, double chainrings, downtube shifter, bullhorn with bar end brake leavers and steel frame in nice blact mat, with brown leather saddle and bar tape
My single speed is just a nice looking blue *milk crate basket on the back rack* bicycle, does the job and if needed, could get it repaired inexpensively
Everything functions properly ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of UA-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
Well I got a vilano bike disk brake 7 speed free wheel quick release but the awful thing is the shifter so I am thinking of to change to shimnao calris 2x8 But the problem how I change the 7 speed gears to 8 gears Bruce’s it is free wheel not Cassatt system if change the hub to a Cassatt hub 8peed will it fits in my frame ????? Even if I choose tourney sti shifters system 2x7 do I need to change the crank set and add the shifter to sti. Or I need to change more stuff what is better calris system or tourney or they are near???? The front devil is 7 speed tourney Tz 7 speed the back one is tourney 6/7 speed both of them are sis index thanks
I'm still not sold on not having brakes. Hopping and skidding is all well and good if you don't mind leaving rubber streaks on the road, and coming to a stop on a steep downhill loosens my sprocket.
Actually there is a company that produces BMX parts called Proper. Their products are really awesome ,I managed to get a proper front wheel, that thing is a proper wheel literally p-r-o-p-e-r
What is your email? I'll send you some photographs of my proper builds 8 bikes in total. Ranging from road single speed, GT mtb, road, carbon road single, track, 26" commuters.
I'm sure I've never ridden a "proper" bike, and will most likely never will. Unless switching parts between two or more dumpster bikes can qualify as "proper" if the idea of the build is a no-cost or low-cost bike that does the job.
I'm 44 and love fixed bikes. The looks, the feel, the workout. I want to graduate from beginner though... Rode a little in the late 2000s but was too busy drinking and doing drugs. I'm way into it now and it seems the fad is over. haha! (I don't see any cool kids out there anymore) Okay! Now it's time for me to find a nice bike; This dude seems to be pointing me in the right direction. Ride Dirty! Late!@Robert Trageser
Robert Trageser 100! But no, the cool kid thing I liked because I was able to talk to friends and friends of friends to get parts, meet up for rides. and now it seems searching the web for a quality built used bike or parts isn’t at all possible. So now for me to step up and get a well built bike is sketchy because these companies are selling the opposite of well built, (proof my last accident). But I’m hoping this research will point me in the right direction to find some honest companies without spending a fortune. At this point I’m weighing in on a Wabi?
You're killing me with all this fixed proper bike talk. I'm a older woman and I just need a bike to take a thirty minute ride to work. Tired of taking the bus and would like to run errands around my neighborhood. Any suggestions on a good bike...Would be thankful.
CAMPER Honsa well... Sometimes a fixed gear bike is pretty practical, when you don't have more money on more gears or your riding characteristics makes you break your derailleur easily, it's pretty good to have a single speed cross bike (also it's fun as well. Maybe,...... Fun> over all usability). :› I also ride a single speed cross bike
It's practical when it comes to maintenance. Just not as practical in hill-ier areas. Also with regular brakes added a fixed gear bike has better ability to slow down than a regular bike only with rim brakes.
Practical when you need a quick workout ya big dummy! 30 min uphill rides is toning my ass so beautifully, come home hop in shower, then ball my wife for another 30 as she strokes my newly toned arms. Better worse, skip the shower and swap body odors with her. Your comment isn't practical!
"I need to speak to your manager"
I know. The Karen is strong with this one

Fatter cranks for deeper wheels or fatter tires.
I always mismatch bar tape and saddle but instead match it to water bottle/cage and/or pedals.

rust is imo great colur :P
The Cinelli Mash Work at 3:26 is one of my favourite builds! The details on it are sweeeeeet!
I'm rocking an ugly Specialized test saddle because you can't beat free.
liam something free is good
My fixed gear is a pretty even mix of free, garbage, and nice components. Lol
Very Welcome to hear these days. Actually last 30 years. Can I apply these principles to a 90s lugged steel road bike? Very well done!

My wabi is all black which screams "I bought a complete!" yet, I get the compliments. I also like how it disappears at night when locked up.
My bike only got compliments when I had on cheap deepdished gold rims.

Keep it up
Man U deserve so much more subs ur videos have such high quality I don't get it and awesome vid
It has to have an 8 gear cassette. Double Chainrings. STIs. Magic Krysiums. And aluminium frame.

Almost... Still missing the paintjob and leather saddle/tape.
Agreed! Video is grounded in solid logic and understanding. Very well said indeed!

Something that can survive several crashes and will last more than 10 years.
Love the well thought out opinion piece
Could you do a video on how to find and select frames for a build?

Every bike was a fixed gear (single speed) in 1940.
The first geared bike was invented in 1871, although they didn't immediately use it.

Thanks for the rules. Excellent lesson on the Aesthetics.
could you do a messenger bag vs backpack video?
Messenger bags are harder to ride with because they swing.

Looking for a video on fixie bike riding on gravel roads. By chance have you done one???
That Ritte rustles my jimmies like no other
Can you do another video on proper bikes?
Your videos are awesome man. You are doing a great job. Glad I stumbled upon you somehow.
So are fixies with 700mm mtb bars proper bikes?
has anyone ever put inverse break levers on drop bars/ mustache bars?
can you do a video on conversions?

Hey Zach! I think you should try making a video on the "UGLY DUCKLING" bikes. I can explain better later, but take a look at "RESPECT BIKES"
Aye no phone to the face. Nice progress
to sum it up: being too expensive
My fixie is looks old and ugly and broken down but works amazing... no one has ever tried to steal it :-D

Your bike can be as sexy as anything... but riding sexy is the real key.
It's subjective , I say my bikes are " proper " even if you don't .
and whats it called when all you care about it part quality/function and could care less about color and aesthetics
Min/Maxing, but it's not pretty. There's room for form and function.
