Oils seem to take fine, and of course surface finishes like lacquer and shellac are good. The saki cup has aged from very pale to a warm orange/brown over the years with no finish, almost certainly due to UV.

What about ability/ease of carving?
Moderately easy I'd say, but not a patch on lime for more intricate work.
