  • Lyrics:
Oh, Eileen Og and that the darlin's name is
Oh, through the Barony her features they were famous
And, if we loved her then who was there to blame us
For wasn't she the Pride of Petravore?
But her beauty made us all so shy
Not a man could look her in the eye
And boys, oh boys, sure that's the reason why
We're in mournin' for the Pride of Petravore
And, Eileen Og my heart is growing grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
And, Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea
But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore
Now, friday at the fair of Ballintubber
Eileen met McGrath the cattle jobber
I'd like to set me mark upon the robber
For he stole away the Pride of Petravore
Now, he never seemed to see the girl at all
Even when she ogled him from underneath her shawl
Looking big and masterful when she was looking small
Most provoking for the Pride of Petravore
And, Eileen Og my heart is growing grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
And, Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea
But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore
And, so it went as it was in the beginning
Eileen Og was bent upon the winning
And, Big McGrath contentedly was grinning
Being courted by the Pride of Petravore
Says he: "I know a girl that could knock you into fits"
At that Eileen nearly lost her wits
And the upshot of the ruction was that now the robber sits
With his arm around the Pride of Petravore
And, Eileen Og my heart is growing grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
And, Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea
But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore
And boys, oh boys, ye' with fate it's hard to grapple
And of my eye, sure Eileen was the apple
And, now to see her walking to the chapel
With the hardest featured man in Petravore
Oh now, boys, this is all I have to say:
When you do your courting make no display
If you want them to run after you, just walk the other way
For they're mostly like the Pride of Petravore
And, Eileen Og my heart is growing grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
And, Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea
But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore

Great version. What a great songwriter Percy French was, and blessed with great humour.

Also known as The Pride Of Petravore, the original lyrics were written by Percy French [1854-1920] with music by William Houston Collisson [1865-1920]. This variant was arranged and recorded by the Irish Descendants as track #10 on their 2004 CD Across The Water (Kells Music, Green Island, New York, recorded in 1993 at Studio 92, Toronto, Ontario). Thanks for sharing. :-)

Irish Descendants have one major feature that sets them apart from (almost) any other performer - you can actually hear and understand every single word. Con's voice is so rich. This is without doubt the best version of 'Eileen Óg'.

I say this song is a lament. The lamenting narrator felt Eileen was out of his class, as did his mates, so he didn't try to court her and neither did his mates.
There is another, unspoken tragedy to this song. Poor, Eileen had only ugly Big McGrath to pursue or be pursued by. She settled for an indifferent man, one that probably would not have provided and loved as the narrator would have done.
The take away is to never limit oneself in romance or any endeavor. The pain of trying and failing is nothing compared to the pain of regret for never making the effort.

    • @sarahlisa5191
      @sarahlisa5191 5 років тому +18

No, Eileen fell in love with McGrath BECAUSE he ignored her. Unfortunately, a lot of women (young me included) only are interested in men that don't pursue us or even actively reject us.

    • @ewaldseiland8558
      @ewaldseiland8558 5 років тому +7

@ Georgie No, I'd say the song has more of a humorous note, and the final advice to young men seems to be given with a twinkle of the eye. Maybe it's more a jocular insight into human weakness than real tragedy.

    • @MensHominis
      @MensHominis 5 років тому +3

Georgie Patton -- there is a part of regretting not to have tried, yes. But the (intentionally) weird conclusion that is drawn is that one should use the same cheap dating artist tricks like McGrath. That's neither deep nor dark-romantic, it just fits the speaker's self-pitying tone, who also says: "That guy stole her from us."
But on the other side I wouldn't say the speaker being depicted as self-pitying was pure mockery of his feelings -- that would be too simple as well.

People are constantly misinterpretating this song.
It's not about love. It's about double standards and men's hipocrisy. Lyrical subject is in love with girl who seemed to be "out of his league", because she was more confident and more attractive than him - he knows that there's lot of pretty girls around him, but he wants none but Eileen. But then, when she falls in love with guy who seems to be "out of her league", because he's more confident and (by her standards, probably) more attractive, the lyrical subject comes to the conclusion that most girls want none but guys out of their league.
He's obviously projecting, and he doesn't truly love Eileen - he doesn't say a word about her personality, habits or preferences, all he can see is her beauty. We can't say if she's happy with McGrath - well, we know him only from words of dude who's in love with his wife - but it's absolutely obvious that she wouldn't be happy with the lyrical subject. He would probably loss all his interest with her just after noticing that she's not "Pride of Petravore", but average human being.

For anyone that may be unsure, it is clear to me that the message of the song is that the song writer had to learn the hard way that girls seem to have an inexplicable attraction towards men that are confidently apathetic towards them. The song writer mentions that McGrath teased Eileen and displayed no interest in her. For some reason this was attractive to her and the songwriter notes that a lot of girls are this way.

What I like the most about this song is how unreliable the narrator is. For all we know McGrath was an alright bloke, and the 2 of them made a perfectly fine couple. But because of their jealousy Eileen's other suitors might be twisting the story to make him seem like a villain who "stole away" their girl.

As that Eileen nearly lost her wits,
The upshot of the ruction was that now the robber sits
With his arm around the pride of Petravore
Eileen Og my heart is growin grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea,
But there's none of them like the pride of Petravore.
Boys, Oh boys! With faith is hard to grapple
Of my eye 'tis eileen was the apple,
Now to see her walking to the chapel
With the hardest featured man in Petravore
Now boys this is all I have to say,
When you do your courting make no display
If you want them to run after you just walk the other way
For they're mostly like the pride of Petravore.
Eileen Og my heart is growin grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea,
But there's none of them like the pride of Petravore
