It’s crazy this is how complex it is to add an app to a “smart” controller! I have both controllers and keep finding myself going back to the standard for a couple reasons - the maps is a big one and the fact I can’t add apps without following the above steps. Sure it’s not too complex - but when you have little kids finding the time for this is nearly impossible - I thought the smart controller would save time - not take MORE time to accomplish the same tasks.

It is a lot easier. I came here looking for a solution, but found if you just browse on the smart controller to the app you want and download it, then go to the file manager and install. Easy peasy.
How about connecting a dongel for mobile 4G data - connection. Could that be attached to the USB-port? I think it is a big disadvantage that the DJI Smart Controller only has WiFi. Then you still need your phone (or a 4G WiFi router) to get the maps working in real time. One of the main ideas behind the Smart Controller is to eliminate number of “things” you need to carry around, right?

I bought a air 2S with smart controller. I found a 3rd party app that supports waypoints. It is called “gofly dji smart controller” do you know it? Anyway I want an app on my controller that supports waypoints like dji go4 does. Will your method work for this purpose? Great video!
works great but the apps i use (drone deploy and Spexi) require google play services to be running in the background, so they wont operate properly....any way to install the entire google play store on the new RC PRO Smart Controller? if you can figure it out please let me know. I did find a tutorial to try but it didn't work, likely due to the unique chip architecture the new RC PRO uses? Anyway, would appreciate if yo can figure it out?

I don’t think so. I just tried the whole process and I get an error on the drone saying “There was a problem parsing the package.” When I try to open/download the file.

Is this really worth the hassle? I have my return label printed but am just doing a sanity check before driving to the post office. The iPhone runs everything, you're fully connected, and you don't have to go through a bunch of nonsense to install apps. I like the brighter screen and better reception but using the RC Pro introduces major issues that we don't have when using a connected iPhone.
Getting this controller has only made it harder for me to share videos and pictures on a simple platform like FB, compared to when I just used my iPhone to fly my drone. I thought it would make it easier
I just purchased a DJI Air 2S and smart controller (RM500)... I don't see a way to run the installer (APK) on the smart remote. Is this remote limited? And, is downloading dropbox a bad idea? As I thought to use 'camera uploads' to sync and upload all my photos and videos to my dropbox account. But, not sure that's a good idea since my dropbox is 200Gb of info and would possibly fill up the 12Gb of internal storage without using the 256Gb SD card. What about Facebook? Thoughts? I did just put a temp SD card in the smart remote and move all my test pictures/videos from internal remote storage to the card. AND, just added a 256Gb card to the Air 2S.
It will crash on dji smart controller. DJI hasn’t sent any units for app developers or even released necessary tools to develop compatible apps, so the platform is locked and actually the smart controller becomes a dumb controller.
I disagree. The DJI Smart Controller is set up to be able to share video and pictures directly to your Facebook account, but you need the app on the controller to do so.

Did all that with Litchi last week. Transferred and installed OK, but failed to activate due to an authorization failure. (This was on an original DJI RC).
runeburman Not supported. DJI have not sent any controllers for developers to make their apps compatible with the controller, so all drone related apps will crash

NSmodelertim sadly it’s not, it’s only compatible with the newer Mavic Pro 2, and Mavic 2 Zoom. They use a newer different method of transmission for connection which is not compatible with the previous Mavic range.
Really annoying. I couldn't get this to work. The link for the APK app listed below does not work. I tried others. I can't get my MAC computer to read the memory card from the controller.. I put it in the controller and formatted it... when I put it in the MACbook It won't use it... This is ridiculous... it should be easy to use this controller and why in the world should it be hard to install Airmap? or UAV Forecast? I can install the Amazon store but not google... makes a really expensive purchase pretty disappointing.

There is much easier way to download apps to smart controller. Go with remotes browser to amazon store and after that you can install apps hazzle free (no sd card needed) straight from strore to your remote.
This is a bad option and sketchy at best. I tried this with the Crystalsky to download mapping pilot apps like Drone Deploy, Pix4D and others that rely on Google Play services, they download and install but they don't function, crash on launch, completely unreliable and as others have said, excellent path for malware. In short, to advertise that it supports third party apps support is very misleading.

Just take SD card out of Smart Controller for install into computer & add App & APK Downloader ? Or do I need to use a blank SD card for this.

There are none apps available, the process shown in the video is illegal, but you can still legally install amazon appstore or f-droid
