Remember the blade wars? Where every shaving company added a blade to its razors until it was fully ridiculous? Wisely we seem to have levelled off when it comes to blades, but the newest innovation is heat. Gillette is making a Heated Razor, and if you thought razors were expensive up to now, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
**I’m going to tell you what supposedly makes this razor so great, what it can do, how it feels and whether it might be a nice if splurge-y investment.
    What is Gillette Heated Razor?
As the name hints, this is a standard razor with the addition of heat, and yes it’s waterproof for sink or shower use. A hidden heating bar heats the blade cartridge to bring a warming sensation to your shave, a feeling Gillette says is like THE PLEASURE OF A HOT TOWEL SHAVE IN EVERY STROKE. While this product is clearly geared at the guys, this is also something us ladies might enjoy so I’m here to share the experience.
    Setting up Gillette Heated Razor
Thankfully there’s not much in the way of set up. The Heated Razor Starter Kit by GilletteLabs comes with a charging base and cable, the razor itself and an extra blade cartridge. Plug it in, and set the razor on the magnetic base where it’ll stand on its own-that’s kinda cool. Let it charge up.
In case you’re wondering, no you can’t use a regular razor in this set up; it’s not like the base just heats up the razor. This is a special razor with a Stainless Steel Warming Bar built in.
    Stainless Steel Warming Bar
The warming bar heats up in less than a second and it really does feel warm fast, and distributes warmth to the skin. As soon as you push the power button it warms, which you can see by the pulsing orange light. When it goes solid, it’s ready. Worried you’ll be placing searing heated metal against your mug? Gilette says the heat is adjustable: that four intelligent heat sensors consistently maintain even warmth at the chosen temperature through each shaving stroke, while built-in safety features ensure an even and safe level of heat.
I can say that before I figured out how to adjust it, the blades felt warm against my legs, but searingly hot when I placed it on the back of my hand. I gave it to my husband to test and he found it uncomfortably hot when pressed against his face.
You can choose two levels of heat (109°F/43°C and 122°F/50°C) to get your preferred temperature. Long pressing on the button changes the heat level… you can tell the difference by the light shade; orangey-red is warmer, yellowy orange is cooler. I will say that when holding it against my skin for testing, it’s noticeably cooler on the cool setting. Which one will bring you the most joy while the blade is in motion is something you’ll need to try.
The razor blades are 5-bladed (yes I’m giggling) for what Gillette says is incredible comfort. The razor also uses Gillette’s FlexDisc™ technology which allows the head more range of motion against your face, or legs, to maintain skin contact in order to give a smooth shave, but also to maximize the heat delivery.
So they say, b ut I didn’t really feel the heat a lot because I was constantly moving the razor, as you do when you shave. So while in motion, you lose some of the effect, but if you hold still, it’s too warm.
    Battery Life:
While your razor can live on the counter and plugged in if you like, if you want to take it on the road, the battery will give you up to 6 shaves from a single charge, depending on how long your shaves take. Of course,it’ll also still work as a razor, sans heat, if the battery dies. I tried the battery by turning the razor on and leaving it on for a bit and it did last me about ??? sessions.
Overall review of Gillette Heated Razor
This is a nice idea in theory, but it’s one that comes with a hefty price tag. While the warming is noticeable when ou’re holding it still, that’s not how you use it and the active warming sensation is less noticeable the quicker you shave. With that said, this does eliminate you putting a cold razor against your face first thing in the morning, but could you get this same effect by running your razor under hot water? Definitely.
While I love me some technology, this device just feels like a solution looking for a problem that no one’s asked Gilette to solve.
The Gillette Heated Razor sells for a whopping $200 US and as of the taping of this video it doesn’t seem to be available in Canada yet. Blades cost about $25US/4-count cartridge pack.

Just got the ad on Instagram to buy one in Canada. $250 for a razor with heat? A razor and 2 cartridge can vary from $15-$25. I find it hard to believe that adding heat to the cartridge adds 10 times the value to the razor.

I went back to wet shaving with a safety razor and I wish I had done it 30 years ago you cannot beat the safety razor shave save for perhaps a straight razor shave. Shave like 1958, your face will love it once you get the knack. Blades cost me 17 cents each!

It’s a specialty razor designed specifically for men with very tough course beards along with men who are prone to razor bumps or breaking out after shaving. Men of color frequently have to deal with this painful situation and finally there looks to be a solution for them but it sucks the solution ends up being so expensive.

This razor is a treat to use during the winter months. It delivers on the promise of a heated shave which is a nice touch.
One can get the same effect with a double edge razor heated under hot water.
But that doesn't take away the engineering genius of this razor. Gillette seems to be ahead of everybody. I have an extensive DE razor collection but I also wanted to try gillette's new technological marvel. Is it a gimmick? I don't think so. Is it necessary to have? Absolutely not Yes I have found their problide razor is probably the best a man can get. With either the pro glide razor or the heater razor one can shave quickly and without razor burn.
My only gripe about this razor is the plastic toy aspect of this razor and the questionable longevity aspect of this razor. I wish they would have made the lithium battery replaceable so it wouldn't have to go into a landfill once it no longer takes a charge.
Also the power button needs to go on top Not on the bottom where your knuckles can turn it off.

I completely disagree with this review. I got the razor a couple weeks ago. I shave every day and I love the thing. It feels great on the face as you shave. I dont understand why her husband said it feels uncomfortable against his face, you dont hold it against your face, you glide it as you normally shave, you dont hold it in one place and not move it so I dont get what is wrong with the way hes shaving. And with her she said she doesnt feel the heat that well,…well her example is showing that she is shaving in what I would guess was a hot bath so her skin acclimated to the temperature of the water and so she doesnt feel the heat as much….the shaver is not scorching hot so if her skin is heated from the water….well duuuaaaa shes not going to feel the heat that well. Like I said I love it and it feels great on the face. If it cost too much dont buy it but if you can afford it get it and Im sure you will enjoy it……btw….I got it off of ebay for $135 and it was brand new sealed in the box. I wasnt crazy about paying $200 but If I knew what I know now the way it feels and shaves I would have paid $200 for it. As I said I shave every day and work hard for the life I live so why not enjoy a nice shave…it really does feel like a hot towel against your face as you get with a barber.

First of all i love the razor. The problem is the battery goes bad after about a year and half. I already had to send my razor in for repair, now again the battery is dead. Gillette needs to make this razor so the consumer can change the battery easly . Makes sense since Gillete makes money on blades more than razors. So keep the consumer happy at least make products easy to use.

When the marketing department takes over your company rather than engineers, this is what happens. Flex disc technology, lubrication strips, and now a heating bar. Ridiculous 🤣 🤣🤣 . People really love spending loads of cash for tech gimmicks. What's next? Perhaps an app for your plastic razor ? Maybe a vibrating Gillette Technology?
I just use an old school brass or stainless steel safety razor. Just run the head of it under hot water before you shave and when you rinse. That way, your razor stays nice and warm. Plus the blades only cost 8 cents for about 8 shaves rather than 5$.
