There’s so much missing from this story. What was the cause of the fire, and is it an issue that exists with all of the homes? Are these increased fees, or the optional one time assessment, to cover the cost of fixing a community issue? When did journalists forget the basics of their profession? Seems like this story is just meant to capitalize on folks disdain for HOA’s 🤷♂️
You're so right. Why did the unit catch on fire in the first place? Was it something caused by the occupant's negligence? Was it something the HOA board failed to repair? Did the HOA shop the policy? Lazy reporting.
Insurance Companies are turning into the biggest racket!!!!! There needs to be Government standards put on the Insurance companies or we'll all be homeless, except the rich! Open your eyes people!
There is no way an insurance company would more than quadruple their rates due to a single fire. Time to take an audit…someone is trying to capitalize on someone else’s misfortune…oh and never live anywhere with an HOA…
I've been in my condo in Sedona, Az for 45 years and the HOA is $270 a month. We have a resident board so the HOA board is all condo home owners with our own best interest in mind. We volunteer to be on the board. Nice as we prepare for future expenses years or decades in advance. Doubling the fees to that amount is devastating. Expenses have risen as insurance costs.
The future of property insurance is likely to look quite different than today. Quite simply, Insurance companies are increasingly subject to huge payouts. Probably the insurance model that will emerge will have a lot more self-insurance and then high threshold catastrophic insurance. This HOA did not cause the insurance premium crisis, they are in fact trying to protect their members.
Our HOA Board in Park City Utah has allowed our neighborhood to deteriorate. They won't raise dues! It will end up costing ea of 180 owners average approximately $100k+- EACH to bring things up to par. CRIMINAL!
It is beyond me why anyone would want to use an HOA in today's economy . A friend of mine owned a Townhome in a development that had an HOA and they were having problems and being overcharged for it . The residents decided to get rid of The HOA (they had to go to court to do it) and now they are much happier . They only have a specific account for roofing repair and replacement , other than that everyone has to do their own repairs and yard work . They had to vote on a set of rules and it works for them .
This is rediculous, but the way they're reporting it seems disingenuous. They said they could have done this as a one time special assessment of $3000. That means that the $800/month is likely for only 7-8 months. Even $400/month seems high, but I'd bet they get their internet, cable TV, water, trash, sewer, Snow removal, landscaping, etc included in that. They also don't have to pay themselves for major expenses like replacing shingles, siding, pavement, etc. I just had to pay $12,000 for new shingles on my house. HOAs are the absolute worst and I would never live in one again, but the news is twisting this to fit their own narrative.
The crappiest part about this whole situation is the insurance spikes are very real. We had to set up our own captive at work because going through the marketplace for policies just didn’t economically make sense 😢
Could be a number of things like a bad insurance company or the HOA reserves not being funded. Either way, the HOA should work for the home owners, not the other way around.
Move to tremonton Utah it's cheaper to live you can get an apartment for six hundred dollars a month you can buy a house for less and no additional costs 😅
I feel sorry for these people but goodness gracious, that “condo” looks like a cheap section 8 apartment complex. My advice would be to try and sell and find something better or at least better construction.
I think this is the funniest thing ever somebody is still buying a house where there is an HOA that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of HOAs are the dumbest thing that I've ever been out why would you buy a house and sign a paper in the neighborhood saying all your neighbors get to tell you what you get to do except the dumbest thing I've ever heard of you're going to pay extra to have other people tell you how to live your life if you're dumb enough to sign up for that you deserve whatever happens
Time to request an HOA audit!!!
I will never live in an HOA, ever! This is just one reason why. I own my home outright and the only 'fee' I have to pay is property tax.
I'm with you..... property taxes are bad enough.
I agree. Never an HOA. controlling everything ppl do - like a bunch of preschoolers……
If and when I can get a place that will be the same for me.
You don't really own it. You pay rent through your property taxes.
Speak!
$800 a month on top of there mortgage. Holy-f……
HOAs are a rip off!!
I have HOA here at Henry Walker Homes in Layton - total garbage. Very suspicious activity…
No HOA for me either! That’s ridiculous!
Ridiculous! Such a rip off!

Who is the HOA treasurer? Are they driving a shiny new Escalade? I bet they will be soon.
Greed will bring the USA to its knees
It already has.

Can't they find a different insurance agency? That is insane.

At first glance I read that as “Beautiful homeowners” 😂
All HOA living people. I advise going to apartment. Way cheaper. Or dissolve your local HOA. May be pricey but you have options.
Keep Bountiful people in Bountiful!
HOA sounds like a landlord for homeowners which defeats the purpose of homeownership. What a crapshoot!!!

This will hurt resale of the property time for a lawyer

Van life?

Stupid Utah government that allows this rise in pay 😅

That’s just ridiculous. You need to get a lawyer.
$800.00/mo.? That is outrageous!
If you're ignorant enough to put yourself under an HOA, I can't feel sorry for you.
Trump’s administration or the attorney general needs to help with this hoa national scam. Im suffering also from my hoa.
The corruption is huge.
They don’t realize that everyone’s prices are going up, Las Vegas is having the same issues.
Ban HOAs in Utah.
That’s their problem. They chose to live in an area with an HOA 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Shady, shady tactics
How often do these HOAs have elections and how do the same ones keep getting to be in charge.
ive told people for years do not live in a hoa...they dont listen...good luck trying to sell that too with a $800 hoa fee...what a joke...
Is there no legal limitations on how high they can change the fee to? In AZ they can only raise it 20%..
I have absolutely no sympathy for anyone that lives in an HOA
When you join an HOA whose fault is that. Never join an HOA
Is SLC booming in work or what that's some coast state prices
having a hoa can be a nightmare, time to ditch them as they are costing everyone too much here in utah....
I wouldn’t pay 800 to live there.
I thought she was gonna say what Im paying in Cali 729$/mo
What are they getting for $350!? I am in Utah and I only pay $135
This is not right people are struggling. HOA should be dissolved. They are like bullies
Sorry, don’t feel sorry for them. They seen the 3 letters that should have kept them out!
Ban HOA in Utah
Mafia! Complete with shakedowns and intimidation!
All HOAs need to be disbanded
That's robbery!!
That's just wrong!!!!
HOA stop robbing people! 😠
You not all that bright if you purchase a home that's governed by and HOA.
Ya think $800 is bad, wait until DJT’s tariff policy kicks in. He wishes you a bitterly cold holiday season!
If you purchase into an HOA, you are at fault. Sorry, not sorry
That’s very judgemental. Often times first time home buyers can only afford townhomes that come with HOAs.
Greed
HOA? Stay away!
But wait, Biden/Harris gave us the best economy ever.
Oh no! Socialism
