If he was somehow able to hurt the physically strongest player (??), that effectively decreases their threat level. As a fit, uninjured male, Joe's threat level would soar and he may be targeted for being the new physically strongest player. Having someone around who is perceived as a bigger threat than you can be very good for your game. For a pretty good example of this, on Survivor 31: Cambodia (Second Chance), a guy called Jeremy Collins had good bonds and alliances with a lot of the other strong players, and in keeping them around, he was not the target of votes. Through the use of his "meat-shield" strategy, he went on to win that season. Perhaps an even better example relating to Joe's point, is how an injury helped Tyson Apostol position himself for a win. When he returned for Survivor 27: Blood vs Water, Tyson had already played twice and people knew he was a strong challenge competitor (despite looking like a stick of uncooked spaghetti with some cooked spaghetti stuck on one end). Tyson was injured early in the season, causing his threat level to take a hit and his fellow castaways to view him as less of a competitor. If he hadn't injured himself early, he may have been targeted much sooner and his path to winning the game would be different. In intentionally injuring the physically strongest castaway, Joe might inadvertently create a Tyson 2.0 situation and help that person mitigate their threat level all the way to a win.
