- This week we install the Eccotemp L10 tankless water heater at our off grid Alaska cabin. We go through how we installed this using PEX fittings and explain how to use the PEX crimp tool. This will finally let us take hot showers on the homestead.
Thanks for watching.

showers in hot water are def going to be better and thats a nice little platform.... happy wife happy life. Thank for the video. Stay safe & have a good week, from South Dakota.
My wife was ecstatic.
Cool, looking good brother, that hot water on demand looks like it'll put out some sure enough hot water!!! Like the shower tent set up!!! Thanks for sharing bro!! Dan
Thanks Dan. If we was in Mississippi we could probably get away with just taking cold showers in the summer. lol
Thanks again buddy for stopping by.
I moved to FL from Hawaii where I installed an outdoor shower which was heavenly so I did the same in North central Florida and have been using these for about 11 years now, I am on my 4th one because they do go wonky, part me and part them. I used to take it down from November to March but now I just drain it and encase it in thermal blankets and wrapped with plastic tarps because its tedious to set up and take down with all the connections. I have rust in well water so I think its hard on these rather temperamental units imo, but its such a joy to have hot water under the stars on a chilly or hot night, I just love this product and recommend highly. I have one for sale now which I cannot get to start, people do buy them for parts I have sold my 2 previous ones over the years. Eccotemp is super customer service oriented and I have had numerous talks with them to get optimal use. North Central FL can have 80 degrees days and go down to 20's at nights so its a learning curve to use this fab product and know when to wrap it for winter. I would not be without it or without my wood burning fireplace.
That’s awesome. We’ve been using ours for years now and still love it.
while i havent been able to watch lately, i appreciate your videos. Me and my family are (and have been for roughly 2 yrs now) planning on moving up there from in the near future. These types of videos help me out alot.
Well thanks Travis. Glad we can help the family out a little with the videos.
My Alaska Dream Right now we are applying to jobs and also looking for housing. Id really like it where your at down in the se part. but i cant get my wife on a boat except for a very big one. so we are looking more inland ,like around homer and soldotna. im wanting off the grid but my wife and kids are not super keen on giving up all the luxuries . So? but seeing this tank set up and solar panel , windmill options i may be able to convince otherwise. Ill be looking forward to the next videos . Thank you.
Well Homer and Soldatna are both nice places. We looked up and down the Kenai Peninsula for a place and found a few we really liked. We wish you guys the best on you job and house hunting.
Pretty sweet man you guys are living the dream at a decent age.
Thanks Eric Price. We feel blessed to be so lucky.
Heck yeah buddy!! Great job done!! I was hoping that plane was coming to bring ya a new fitting.. Keep up the great work!
Thanks CB, I was hoping he was giving out free rides. lol
Happy wife happy Life. Did you forget to put a washer in the garden hose? Nice how little things are taken for granite when I was a youn boy we did not have running water either and did sponge baths
Hey OT good the hear from you. Yeah, that garden hose adapter is leaking in the middle of the swivel joint. Frustrating but we got it fixed now.
We have taken several bird baths since we moved out here. It is nice to have working hot water. Thanks again for stopping by.
I was quite thurogh (sp?) with the problem solving, I returned the L7 today. Thanks for quick responce and advice.
No problem. Sorry it didn’t work out for you.
Shower in the wood your becoming civilized LOL great job on the setup
Ha, that's right. Thanks for stopping by.
Still catching up and learning allot. You are helping tons with my planning. I'm a big fan of learning from others so I don't have to stumble myself. You guys are Killin'it.
Thank you. I was the same way. Watched Fouch o matic and wranglerstar when he was building an off grid place. There is a ton of helpful videos. I’ve really kind of been doing a vlog but I want to start doing more this has worked for us type videos as well. We will see if they are a hit or a miss with the community.
It looks great. Got to feel good to be able to take hot showers.
Yes sir, hot showers are the best.
Nothing like a hot shower at home. Good thing for that enclosure around it so the bears don't see ya naked. 😊Your wife looks like a happy camper! Good work!
Thanks Mindy. Ha we can't have peeping bears.
Wow, using Pex is much faster than PVC!!
Hey, Don't mind that plane, It's not like they were using a telephoto lens to document you..... They use Satellites for that lol ;-)
Yeah it is.
lol that's the truth.
Howdy. I just purchased a new L10. Do you think I will necessarily need to use the pump if my setup is essentially using a 5 gallon water tote and garden hose sitting in the tote and using the eccotemp shower spray?
It needs a certain amount of pressure to work. You and try it without a pump and see if it works.
Hi I was going to say looks like you forgot the rubber washer from that brass fitting but you got it sorted (that some nice waterflow ) go wash her back dude lol gr8t vid
Mr. Long good to hear from ya. Yeah, she's loving it. lol
How does the water pressure situation work? Does the knob in the shower have some wires that run to the water pump to turn it on? Thx in advance! great video!
No the water pump pressurizes the lines and as soon as you turn the water on the water heater kicks on and starts warming the water.
Good video. Just curious how much pex did you run on the hot outlet ? Did you notice a big drop in flow gpm/ pressure at the shower head ? I need to run a 25 foot garden hose to extend to the bathroom .
We ran the same amount of garden hose and probably about 20’ of pex. It runs fines.
Very nice! Couple of questions... how are you keeping this safe from the elements (rusting etc.)? How would you vent this if put inside somewhere? Thanks!
We have it set up behind our cabin now and haven’t had any rust issues. If we were to vent it inside I’d just put it on a wall venting straight out of the wall.
They do make interior units as well.
SPOILED ROTTEN!...and join us next week for manicures and pedicures!LOL..That awesome you guys!. Im so happy for yall! keep em coming, we're all living vicariously through you! LOL
lol you know a good mani pedi is the only way to go.
Will have to get you up here so you can enjoy the spa treatment like us. lol
AHHHHHH ! a nice Alaskan spa! that sounds nice! You mark my words, we will come to visit one day! You may need a bigger boat to carry my crew to your Island! Hey do you have bears or other predators on your island?
The answer to bears is...not really. They have been know to swim over from Admiralty Island but that's far and few between. Admiralty has all the brown bear you could ever want.
Cool.
🤗
You and your son put up a black tent awhile back. Now I see a tan tent(shaped differently than the black one) in the background. You have 2 now or did the black one fail?
We had a Black and Tan tent. The tan tent collapsed after a big snow dump.
“Go nogo?” You adjusting headspace and timing on that heater and prepping it to fire?
Lol, some of us can never let go of the jargon.
I’m really enjoying watching your vids. All the technical stuff being what I will need to consider in the next couple years...
(Edit: Lowe’s? I thought S.E. Alaska only had Home Depot?)
Edit: Looks like someone forgot the plumber’s tape when attaching the garden hose. Can’t screw together metal to metal, gotta have tape in between...
Also, are you collecting rainwater from your roof? With about a dozen feet of rain per year, you should be...
Ma deuce my favorite.
Yeah we only have Home Depot here. Some of the tools are from down south and we had a Lowe’s a block away from our house in CO.
that leak was from a swivel fitting. It would not stop leaking. lol
All the water we get is from the roof. It surprising how a drizzle all day long can fill a barrel pretty fast.
Hopefully you can learn from my mess ups.
Nice shower setup, at least with tent you don't scare the neighbors 😳
lol Tom Thiel, it really to keep the cold rain off of us.
Going to get an outdoor shower setup going finally. No more porch showers.
Almost Homestead yes brother Jay. DO IT!
Thanks for the vid, Alaska. What gpm were you running? Did you test your max temps at 2 or 3 gpm with propane maxed? (was that plane watching or just doing pilot training? ha) tyvm
I never tested the gpm or the temps. It worked good enough for me.😂
In her robe? Yea right! We see your grin! Nice job!
Lol thanks. That’s still the shower we use to this day. One day it will be inside the cabin.
Bought a house in fairbanks!
Nice dude, when are you moving?
My Alaska Dream October I got a small studio apartment down here where I live right now so most of my stuff will fit in my truck only thing that's being delivered is a TV computer and beds the rest is going in my truck then I'll buy anything else I need in Fairbanks in total for them moving my stuff is about 7000 plus whatever amount of gas I gotta pay and hotel etc but my dream has become true!
That is awesome. When will you be heading up there? I think you love it.
It get cold but very cool place and the aurora in the winter is awesome.
Congratulations!
You worked for Redpath? They had many big projects here in Timmins ON, their Canadian headquarters are in North Bay ON, I worked for Dumas Mining.
No they just gave me the hat. They had a big project at the mine I used to work at. Good group of guys.
subbed-good work man!
Thanks Nick Henton.
The eccotemp L7 arrived with water in it. Is this normal? And it does not get hot. It has two temps: Luke warm and cold. I've done all the trouble shooting as instructed. What to do...?
Hey Gregg, I’d go back and check all the connections. Is the propane hooked up and turns on and is the battery positioned correctly? You should here the unit ignite if everything is hooked up properly.
Also try turning the hot dial to max and the cold off.
If none of that works I would contact the company. Maybe you just got a bum unit. Mine didn’t have water in it when it arrived. I’m sure they have quality control so that would make sense.
Sorry it’s giving you trouble.
Good luck.
New sub and looking forward to checking out your vids.
Thanks True North Living. I'll have to swing over and see what's going on in your neck of the woods.
Looking to go to college in Alaska, what should I do University of Fairbanks, or university of anchorage?
Hey Ryan Besch, if you want biggest city and -20 go to Anchorage, if you want big city and -40 go to Fairbanks. They both have their pros and cons.
Good Luck in school whichever one you choose.
LOL...looks like you got your shower while hooking it up.
Ha I did
Helped us with our tank but could have done without all the unrelated chat
Nice shower tent! Can you convert that into a sauna?
For the spa visit, yes I can. lol
I envy you every single minute of every day
Thanks for watching Christo Pretorius. We enjoy sharing with you.
Having the same problem with the swivel fittings on my eco temp heater..those fittings are a nightmare. They have to perfectly straight or they will leak
Yeah they are the worst.
Pro tip: watch series at Flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Mohamed Gerald yup, have been watching on Flixzone for since november myself :)
Hello, I live off grid as well. How is this product doing now that it is a few years later? Have you had any issues? Did you insulate it or build a house around it to keep it from freezing? I appreciate it. I am really considering one
It’s still working. We don’t use it in the winter however. Once we get an indoor shower we will try mounting it inside with it vented outside. It’s not recommended for indoor use but I’ve seen others do it.
thanks for the info! Great video. I got a question, how many showers do you get out of one propane tank?
girlonlaptop that’s a great question, I’m not sure. We have to disassemble the shower in the winter. Next summer I’ll find out how many you can get in one tank. I guess it also depends on the user. 5 min vs 30 min shower.
Thanks for watching.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead i would be the 3 to 5 min shower person! Thanks for taking the time to respond. Wishing you the best!
girlonlaptop you are welcome. Have a great weekend.
What did you use to hook up the propane tank?
It comes with a hose hookup for the propane.
I enjoy your videos. And your adventures in Alaska.
I have a remote off grid cabin. I am interested in buying a Eccotemp water heater. I see you made this video about a year ago. I am interested in your thoughts on the Eccotemp? (Other than the crap fittings included). Is the unit still working? Are you still happy with it?
Any info is much appreciated.
Thanks-
Yeah it is still going strong. We will have to break it down again for winter but all in all I think it’s a fairly inexpensive way to have hot water.
My Alaska Dream
Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it.
No problem
Come on guys, hit the like button. It’s not that hard to help out. Thanks!
You tell em Richard👍
Is rain catchment your only source of fresh water?
It is our main source. There is a creek but it's much easier to catch it from the roof.
What kind of pump are you using?
Everbilt 1/2 HP shallow well jet pump.
Do you notice any faint smell of propane when starting unit ? I fired mine up today first time , I wimped out and shut off even I smelt a super faint hint of propane
Do you thread the propane fitting with sealing tape?
I don’t but ours is outside and normally a slight breeze.
I did use tape.
i just fond 1 more :)
Nice👍
how many showers per cylinder ?
Mine works great untill the wind blows out the flame then it's cold
Yeah that would leave you with a cold shower. We’ve never had our flame go out, luckily.
I think the guy was there to drop a few kilos of marijuana for ya.
lol Alaska did vote to legalize marijuana last year.
pex get worn down in the sun, it looks like a dogs breakfast
👍
👍
Gotta go buy a crimper and PEX ????.......no diagram in manual......friggin ridiculous piece of equipment
Crazy, same thing happened when I bought a water filter and a water pump. No connectors or pipe included, ridiculous.
Literally useless video… nothing to do with the water heater that’s helpful 😒
We are a entertainment channel. We rarely title our videos as “How to” unless it is a DIY tutorial.
