  • This week we install the Eccotemp L10 tankless water heater at our off grid Alaska cabin. We go through how we installed this using PEX fittings and explain how to use the PEX crimp tool. This will finally let us take hot showers on the homestead.
    Thanks for watching.

    I moved to FL from Hawaii where I installed an outdoor shower which was heavenly so I did the same in North central Florida and have been using these for about 11 years now, I am on my 4th one because they do go wonky, part me and part them. I used to take it down from November to March but now I just drain it and encase it in thermal blankets and wrapped with plastic tarps because its tedious to set up and take down with all the connections. I have rust in well water so I think its hard on these rather temperamental units imo, but its such a joy to have hot water under the stars on a chilly or hot night, I just love this product and recommend highly. I have one for sale now which I cannot get to start, people do buy them for parts I have sold my 2 previous ones over the years. Eccotemp is super customer service oriented and I have had numerous talks with them to get optimal use. North Central FL can have 80 degrees days and go down to 20's at nights so its a learning curve to use this fab product and know when to wrap it for winter. I would not be without it or without my wood burning fireplace.

      My Alaska Dream Right now we are applying to jobs and also looking for housing. Id really like it where your at down in the se part. but i cant get my wife on a boat except for a very big one. so we are looking more inland ,like around homer and soldotna. im wanting off the grid but my wife and kids are not super keen on giving up all the luxuries . So? but seeing this tank set up and solar panel , windmill options i may be able to convince otherwise. Ill be looking forward to the next videos . Thank you.

      Well Homer and Soldatna are both nice places. We looked up and down the Kenai Peninsula for a place and found a few we really liked. We wish you guys the best on you job and house hunting.

    Howdy. I just purchased a new L10. Do you think I will necessarily need to use the pump if my setup is essentially using a 5 gallon water tote and garden hose sitting in the tote and using the eccotemp shower spray?

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  Рік тому

      It needs a certain amount of pressure to work. You and try it without a pump and see if it works.

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  2 роки тому

      No the water pump pressurizes the lines and as soon as you turn the water on the water heater kicks on and starts warming the water.

    Good video. Just curious how much pex did you run on the hot outlet ? Did you notice a big drop in flow gpm/ pressure at the shower head ? I need to run a 25 foot garden hose to extend to the bathroom .

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  2 роки тому

      We ran the same amount of garden hose and probably about 20’ of pex. It runs fines.

    Very nice! Couple of questions... how are you keeping this safe from the elements (rusting etc.)? How would you vent this if put inside somewhere? Thanks!

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  4 роки тому +2

      We have it set up behind our cabin now and haven’t had any rust issues. If we were to vent it inside I’d just put it on a wall venting straight out of the wall.
      They do make interior units as well.

    “Go nogo?” You adjusting headspace and timing on that heater and prepping it to fire?
    Lol, some of us can never let go of the jargon.
    I’m really enjoying watching your vids. All the technical stuff being what I will need to consider in the next couple years...
    (Edit: Lowe’s? I thought S.E. Alaska only had Home Depot?)
    Edit: Looks like someone forgot the plumber’s tape when attaching the garden hose. Can’t screw together metal to metal, gotta have tape in between...
    Also, are you collecting rainwater from your roof? With about a dozen feet of rain per year, you should be...

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  6 років тому

      Ma deuce my favorite.
      Yeah we only have Home Depot here. Some of the tools are from down south and we had a Lowe’s a block away from our house in CO.
      that leak was from a swivel fitting. It would not stop leaking. lol
      All the water we get is from the roof. It surprising how a drizzle all day long can fill a barrel pretty fast.
      Hopefully you can learn from my mess ups.

    The eccotemp L7 arrived with water in it. Is this normal? And it does not get hot. It has two temps: Luke warm and cold. I've done all the trouble shooting as instructed. What to do...?

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  4 роки тому

      Hey Gregg, I’d go back and check all the connections. Is the propane hooked up and turns on and is the battery positioned correctly? You should here the unit ignite if everything is hooked up properly.
      Also try turning the hot dial to max and the cold off.
      If none of that works I would contact the company. Maybe you just got a bum unit. Mine didn’t have water in it when it arrived. I’m sure they have quality control so that would make sense.
      Sorry it’s giving you trouble.
      Good luck.
